Out of the Storm: Confronting America’s Catastrophic Risk Crisis
Wednesday September 17, 2008 - Friday September 19, 2008 from 7:00pm - 2:00pm
Westin Resort Hilton Head Island
2 Grasslawn Avenue
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina 29928 Get Directions
Host: The Competitive Enterprise Institute and the South Carolina Department of Insurance. The clouds are gathering: a perfect storm of bureaucracy, mismanagement and incentives for risky building and poor land usage have put America directly in the path of an insurance crisis of catastrophic proportions. One strong hurricane in the right place could bankrupt an entire state. Broken levees near flood-plains where homes perhaps should have never have been built can damage billions of dollars worth of property and endanger the lives of residents. It is not a question of if but when any of these disasters will occur. The question is will America be prepared to weather the storm or will ignorance and bad public policy risk lives, homes, and the crippling of our country’s economic health? The Competitive Enterprise Institute and the South Carolina Department of Insurance welcome you to consider these questions at the 2008 conference, a gathering of elected officials, regulators, academics, scientists, and insurers. Listen to panelists and participate in workshops to discuss possible solutions that can prepare us in the event of catastrophic disaster.
