Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Get Directions
Program:
Dvorak: Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 51; Ives: Quartet No. 1; Dvorak: Quartet in A-flat Major, Op. 105

“These are high-powered performances with at times terrifying attack and explosive accenting… they are mightily impressive.” (Gramophone)

Join the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society at Perelman Theater for the opening of PCMS’ 23rd season on Monday, October 13th at 8PM. We’re happy to welcome the eight-time Grammy Award winners back to Philadelphia, and to witness Emerson’s interpretation of two quartets by Antonin Dvorak, one of the foremost composers of the Romantic era who let his cultural roots shine through in his music—the rhythms and melodies seem to embody the folk traditions of his native Czechoslovakia and surrounding regions. The third piece, Charles Ives’ Quartet No. 1, subtitled "A Revival Service,” is based on a series of works that the American composer had written for church services. For more information and for complete biographies on the members of the Emerson Quartet, please visit www.emersonquartet.com.

For additional information on Antonin Dvorak and Charles Ives, please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton%C3%ADn_Dvo%C5%99%C3%A1k and http://www.charlesives.org/, respectively.

Get to know the Emerson Quartet!

Watch: Get to know the members of the Emerson Quartet as they record the Octet in E-flat Major, op. 20 of Felix Mendelssohn – a project which produced the Grammy-winning MENDELSSOHN: THE COMPLETE STRING QUARTETS. In this two-part documentary, Drucker, Setzer, Dutton, and Finckel talk about their experiences with the recording process, record selections of the CD, and ultimately approach the music with a combination of humor and candid honesty.
