I recently met with Colorado resident Peter R. VanDernoot, the founder, Chairman and Executive Director of The Children’s Treehouse Foundation, and what an amazing man! The mission of the organization is to provide emotional support for children of patients with cancer. They are a unique organization struggling to reach every child that needs their support.
Peter told me that “approximately 315,247 parents ages 25 to 54 will be diagnosed with invasive cancer each year,” and those numbers are shocking considering these statistics are only for the “invasive” cases. He also commented that “the 315,247 parents have the heart-wrenching task of breaking the news to more than 592,000 sons and daughters under the age of 18 of their dire situation.”
The Children’s Treehouse Foundation created the program CLIMB--Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery, a six-week-long program, accompanied with a new activity book just released in April of this year. This program, along with the activity book, provides a way for kids to use “art, games and journals to express their feelings and emotions.” The activity book, “Talking with My Treehouse Friends about Cancer,” is available for sale on Amazon and Banes & Noble along with “Helping Your Children Cope with Your Cancer,” also written by Peter.
Peter is working hard to implement CLIMB around the country and aspires to bring this program to people in need across the world. To do this, he needs your help to reach not only the parents with cancer and their children, but also hospitals, doctors and cancer organizations. Please forward this information to anyone located anywhere in the world who might be able to help Peter. Contact information for Peter can be found on the Children’s Treehouse Foundation’s website at http:// www.childrenstreehousefdn.org.
If you would like to meet Peter, he will be speaking about CLIMB and The Children’s Treehouse Foundation at Link to Share’s Breakfast Breakthrough event on July 24th at Marie Callender’s at 51 W. Dry Creek Court in Littleton Colorado. The event starts at 8:00 a.m. and space is limited. If you would like to attend, you can register on the Link to Share website at
