Ginormous Update

We've got boatloads of improvements to announce, including some big backend updates: performance tuning, better searches, venue and event deduping, and yes, time zones!

Although hopefully it hasn't been too noticeable, we've recently been having some growing pains. We've been doing a lot of tuning under the hood which should speed things up noticeably (check out the tag browsing, zowie fast!).

We've also retrofitted our site search and REST API w/ Yahoo Search Technology™, now with booleans! (We'll add documentation soon, also there's a bit of UTF-8 funkiness, which we're working on next.)

Our friends at 30 Boxes noticed we didn't have a 30 Boxes export option on event pages - noted, and corrected!

A huge thanks goes out to the Yahoo! Surfers Adam, Grace, and Suzi, who have been carefully going through some of our duplicate data and correcting and merging venues and events.

Oh yeah, and we added time zone support. New reminders should now be sent at the right time. It should all just work, but we'll be adding an interface for you to report errors soon. For now, just drop us a line here or on our wiki if you see something funky.

We're a long ways from Gamma, but we're getting there.

Aww, I love this site. *big hugs*

If you ever need extra moderators; I'm up for that.

Plus; I love the iCal integration. Its good to see some mac support in there and it means I can sync Upcoming, iCal, my Sony Ericsson AND my iPod to be exactly the same.

Lovely, wonderful, great. Love the new eye-catching "Add" button, too. So when do we get hierarchical metros? I've flagged some weirdness around odd branches of orphan metros paralleling the established ones in the Bay Area metros. It just makes too much sense not to be able to add an event in the Berkeley metro and have it show up in the SF Bay Area metro.

additional requests: ability to add a venue when editing an event; events I update not showing up in my recent updates sidebar; events added by someone else to several groups I'm a part of not repeating for each group in the updates sidebar. Event photos! (maybe with flickr tie-in?) I also don't see any obvious way to track events I've created if I'm not attending or watching 'em. And group moderation has a long way to go, in terms of controlling events.. there's no way I've found to undo adding an event to a group! Also, some method other than pop-up menus for entry would be handy, especially for SF Bay Area venues starting with a "Z" and entering lots of start/end times (maybe it works in Windows/Explorer, but at least in Safari on a Mac there's no way to type-select on pop-up menus; pop-up fields do allow that).

coxy: We love you too. :) The time zone fixes should definitely have some bigger benefits for users like you in Europe. We're going to keep plugging away at i18n.

raines: I think we're agreed that the goal is to make sure events show up across the appropriate metros automatically. We've been doing a number of things behind the scenes that are/will be fixing this - the approaches we're taking don't currently include "hierarchical metros," so the literal answer to your question is "probably never," but the answer to the the gist of your question is that "we're totally working on it!"

Thanks for the feedback. The add venue when event editing is something we don't have, but that I'll definitely add to the list while we're overhauling the add event flow.

For event tracking, usually watching is what people should use for tracking events their interested in but not necessarily going to. You *could* create your own group and send those events to the group if you need a separate list... or bookmark them in del.icio.us? :)

now i can only see events in the next few days... how do i page forward thru all events?
Posted 2 years ago
ditto, nnjg... metros only show up to 20ish upcoming events, no "more"/"show all" button. Holy site limitation, batman!
Posted 2 years ago
can that be brought back, that was the best part...
Posted 2 years ago
Yes, please.

It made it much easier to plan ahead.

yep, one of the things that broke w/ the update, hoping to push out a fixed paginator today!
Posted 2 years ago
Okeydoke, we should have pagination back up and at'em for Metros, Searches, and Tags. Drop a line if there are any important ones that are missing.

This is a place specific bug: The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor has got some kind of Metro bug. It shows up in the lists for Ann Arbor Metro Events, but when you look at an event there, the nav trail at the top says "Home > Metro > United States > Michigan > Detroit" not "Home > Metro > United States > Michigan > Ann Arbor" And when events at the Michigan Theater appear in my Friend's Events list, it shows as being in Detroit, not Ann Arbor. Other venues in Ann Arbor do not show up this way - they say Ann Arbor at the top, and they say Ann Arbor in Friends Events lists.

The Michigan Theater isn't in Detroit and really shouldn't come up as being in Detroit. I'm not sure if this is a bug or this is how the 'umbrella metros' are being implemented, but if it's the latter, I do hope you'll rethink it. It's confusing and as downtown Detroit is an hour from Ann Arbor, I don't think it's accurate, either.

Have you seen this?

Chinese Upcoming imitator.

Whoa, that's crazy. Is it any good? Anyone knows who runs it, what the goal is? It does highlight how l10n would really be useful...

Lesse how it's different than Upcoming:

* Private messaging between members.
* "Share with MSN buddy", "Outlook contact" javascript links on each event page.
* "Attach photos" utility on each event page.
* Weather report in the sidebar.
* "Recently viewed events" in the sidebar.
* A tag-cloud-style venue list with hot venues in bold.
* Majority of users from Beijing and Shanghai.
* "Weblog", "homepage", and "personal photo album" links in user profiles.
* Lots of music, but also lots of sales at major department stores.
* Uses Baidu and Sina for maps instead of Yahoo.
* No RSS.

No idea on who's behind it.

Completely bizarre, and a bit flattering.

msittig: Private messaging is definitely alive and well here, but we've kept it a little hidden! We announced it a few months ago. You can send any other member a message by clicking on the link on their profile page.

Hadn't noticed it :)

Hi. The upcoming badge is great. But have you considered adding an option to show the LOCATION of the event in the badge listing? e.g.

6/19
Frankie's Rock band @ Tiki Bar, Phoenix AZ

6/20
Frankie's Rock band @ Lava Lounge, Tuscon AZ

This would be awesome, and kind of essential, for listing tour dates.

Good point ramonandjessica. I'll put that on our list

Thinking of attending the Harly Strictly Bluegrass event in San Francisco- any tips on reasonably places to stay. Does a person need to make reservations to this event. Thanks

FEATURE REQUEST: Is there any way you can offer RSS feeds for specific categories? I'm about to unsubscribe from the Chicago general feed, because it is entirely dominated by music. I would love a feed that is just Chicago for the category of visual arts. Thank you.

I've been looking for a site where I can enter my favorite bands and have an email sent to me whenever they're coming to my area. Do any sites like this exist? Upcoming.org seems like the perfect site to do this - can this be added as a feature? I would LOVE it! Thanks!

Think the same, agoraphone!!!

My Firefox extension, Leak Monitor (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2490/), is catching leaks in the Javascript. An example is when I view _any_ event. Might wanna look into that. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the note Brian. Our current subscribe/export widget is a bit leaky - we'll be fixing that as soon as we get a chance (we've been doing some frontend work as you might have noticed!)

Leonard, the new site is looking great and working very well. Where's the announcement?!
Posted 1 year ago
Nice new look, great new features, but I'm having trouble adding new events using Safari. I keep getting "page loading cancelled" just before the last piece goes in that will make the Preview button work.
Posted 1 year ago
imho,
the new layout for the metro pages is not an improvement. in contrary. i am lacking an overview on this page with normally a long list of events which you just want to screen very quickly.
the additional information might be useful at times, but it's way to "verbose". not screenable at all.

also the usefull sidebar isn't shown anymore. a bug?

next. when adding an event to a metro, why do i have to select a venue from a list of the whole world? many venues have same name. not so good.

hope something happpens here.

another thing: when re-editing an event all html tags get stripped out.

html output for entries also isn't consistent on the site and in the rss. it layouts differently.

paul: we wanted to shake out some issues over the weekend. Andy will be posting something shortly.

raines: there are a few Safari issues that we're in the process of ironing out. There are some very bizarre DOM bugs there, look for some fixes in the next day or two (sorry for the inconvenience Safari users)

matsch: thanks for the feedback. the new metro listing is a work in progress and we'll be tweaking it more (filtering/sorting, etc.). A more "scannable" version might be something we can make available, but in hopefully you can give the new version a try and see if it grows on you. We've been using it internally and found that it really helped with making the events we might be interested in pop out (since it now gives precendence to the events your friends are going to and then popularity grouped by day).

The sidebar is gone for now, but hopefully soon to be replaced with something more context-sensitive and equally useful.

The venues should auto-filter as you type. We didn't want to force someone to have to enter a metro. We're tweaking this as well (better location searching/sorting behavior, possibly additional fields...) Is there anythign right now that you're running into problems with (concrete examples would be useful).

We'll look into the HTML filtering/rendering issues as well.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
