Javascript Update

A new javascript update resolves Mac problems + more...

To address the recent crop of AJAX problems, we've been working hard at porting our JS to use the latest release of the excellent Yahoo UI libraries. Mac browsers, including FF 1.5X and Safari 2.0 (on OSX 10.4) should be working well now, as they receive Grade A Browser Support from the YUI team.

The new code also focuses on a variety of performance enhancements and code refactoring as well. Adding and editing events should be faster, especially the popup calendar widgets. The other panels & autocompletes should also be working better, as i've fixed some old visual bugs and cleaned up the code.

As always, if you're still having problems with the javascript forms, we do offer the "old" forms at /add/event and /edit/event//, which should be linked from the AJAX pages if you have javascript disabled. If you're just having problems, then you might want to use those URL's yourself directly. Please report any remaining javascript problems on the wiki along with your OS and browser versions, and we'll get to it ASAP. Thanks for your patience!

Thank you! I was starting to avoid entering keywords for fear of browser crashes in Safari, wondering if I had a corrupted cache or something. Whoops! Crashes still happening, problem not fixed.

You're welcome. :)

Hi, I'm crashing completely out of Safari every time I attempt to enter a time in the time text edit field -- select text, type over one or more chars and boom. Specs: Mac 10.4.8, G4, Safari 2.0.4 (419.3). (A time field pop-up/drop-down would be nice!)

yep, same thing here, have switched to Firefox for entering events for now, if you need to change the time it crashes Safari. OSX.4.8 all updates installed.

Okay, i'll check that out after I get back from Thanksgiving and have access to a Mac with Safari 2.0.4. Good to hear that FF still works, please use that in the meantime.

We used to have select boxes, but people said that it would be nice to have text input. We prefer it as well, as it allows all possible times, instead of just preset ones. We'll probably stick with it for now.

For me it's only an issue with keywords although I think I once saw it elsewhere on the site. It seems to be related to pressing the shift key or typing longer keywords or spending more time in the field.

Still crashing here while entering location of event on Safari 2.0.4 OSX.4.8
Camino works, though :(

Yeah, we were able to reproduce it by just changing the value in the start time field and tabbing out.

Right now, it looks like yet another safari / webkit bug. We're looking into a workaround, but use your substitutes for now.

Just giving you an update: We tracked down the bug to a conflict between Safari autocomplete and YUI, so we're contacting the relevant authorities. :) Hang in there!

Are you guys all using G4's, or are some of you experiencing the problem on G5's?

all our macs are G4

Okay, the YUI team pulled together a workaround for us. Thanks guys! Could you let us know if this prevents the crash for you?

just wondering if i can use my id to chat with???

Someone started the rumor that you'll someday be able to use your Upcoming.org username as your ID on Yahoo! Messenger and in Yahoo! chat rooms. This isn't true, and that kind of backdoor is impossible.

As I've said before, we will be switching over to Yahoo! IDs at some point, but your existing Upcoming.org nickname won't carry over to any other Yahoo! services. So if you were hoping to snag jerry@yahoo.com, you're out of luck!

Hooray! Old-style add forms! Something about the AJAX auto-complete drives me crazy.

Awesome... I haven't noticed the "event adding bug" for a while now, fingers will remain crossed though...
