THUNDERHEIST return to SF fresh off the heels of their new album release and we're happy to bring it to you FREE of charge as one way of saying thanks for all the support this year! Stealing thunder so you move that ass, the duo dubbed Thunderheist unleash serious electro-pop with heavy boom bap party funk. Ribcage rattling bass breaks laced with proper rhyming are flipped with digital booty bass, 80s- inspired electronic pop, and slowed down Southern bounce, all fresh dipped in serious swagger. Dancefloors get loose when Thunderheist reigns. Tunes like 'Jerk It', 'Suenos Dulces' and 'Bubblegum' get bodies bumping. Music blogs light up with repostings the moment they post a new tune. DJs from all over the world drop them in the mix. Press has come knocking fast and furious, based on the smiling, sweaty faces coming out of TH jam. You won't want to miss this!!

Dec 2, 2009: Community Speak Up at YouTube

Speaking up can be fun!

It's time for another Community Speak Up! This time around YouTube will be graciously hosting, so please join us in San Bruno for another chance to discuss online community work. Here's an overall description of the Community Speak Up concept:

Community work is full of ups and downs. The concept is hardly new, but the acceptance of Community Management as a field is still growing. Even still, case by case experiences range from community to community, and even less discussed, company to company. Adding to the confusion, the community space is becoming increasingly more crowded with claims of "expertise" from people claiming to be "social media gurus."

Personally, these thoughts prompted regular lunches with others working in the community space. While each individual experience was filled with unique challenges, over the course of time a single need began to resonate: "Where is our support system?"

The definition of "support" varies from person to person. By founding the Community Speak-Up, we aim to gather a group of community-minded folks around the things that should matter: discussions about Community Management as a field, career growth, tips and best practices, problem solving, and most importantly, grounded conversations about what it takes to be a Community Manager.

Our view is that the field of Community Management is continuing to grow, and because experiences vary, there really is a need to gather, discuss, and learn from one another on a more regular basis. We want to help grow this field through unified support, so please consider joining us once a month with a desire to speak up.

Dec 2, 2009: £5 App Meet at Hectors House

A meet-up for programmers, web developers and designers to discuss and showcase their "£5 apps" - lightweight software created by one or two people who take a simple idea and run with it.

The discussion will range from technical (what tools/languages were used during development) to business (building communities, spreading the word, costs and rewards).

This years Christmas special £5app will be held at Hector's House and has a music theme (much like the gaming theme of last year's Christmas special (http://fivepoundapp.com/meetup/14/) ).

We've got quite a busy line-up, so we expect everything to run for a bit longer than usual:

* Seb Lee-Delisle (http://sebleedelisle.com/) – "My life as a wannabe rock star at the birth of the internet music boom"
* Toby Cole (http://www.55th.co.uk/) – "Zero to Theremin in 20 days" – How BuildBrighton built a feature rich, ultrasonic, laser etched MIDI controller in under three weeks
* Tom Hume (http://tomhume.org/) – "You're all an orchestra, get over it" – Bluetooth devices will interact with the audience to create changing ambient music, created by Future Platforms for a Hack Day
* Jim Purbrick (http://jimpurbrick.com/) – A short talk on the Mrmr/LiveAPI guitar mounted iPhone Ableton live interface by the head of Second Life Europe (and later a demo with 100Robots)
* 100Robots (http://www.myspace.com/onehundredrobots) – Jim and Max Williams (http://webcrisps.wordpress.com/) play live and loud for us

Seb has the main talk:

"Before Seb Lee-Delisle was peddling his digital creations, he had an entirely different life. He spent most of his 20s setting up Solar Records and promoting his band Stargirl (later Laine). Investing over £50,000 of their own money, they released their own CDs, made it onto the radio and TV, played in front of 30,000 people, recorded at George Martin’s Air Studios and had full page spreads in the nationals."

"They were at the forefront internet music boom of the late 90s. The future was looking rosy for this group of dynamic 20-somethings. So come and find out what it was like, how the hell they got the £50K, and why their plans didn’t quite reach fruition…"

Beer – several of us who are doing well this year will put up some bar-money (Alan of SensibleDevelopment (http://www.sensibledevelopment.com/) and Ian's ProCasts (http://procasts.co.uk/) so far, several more to come, get in contact if you want to share the love). We may also get mulled wine if we're lucky.

Food – maybe nibbles. Hopefully either cake or cookies too.

Nov 20, 2009: Startup Weekend Silicon Valley at Hacker Dojo

Startup Weekend is a 54 hour startup event that provides networking, resources and incentives for individuals and teams to go from idea to launch. Get connected with local developers, innovators and entrepreneurs. Build Community. Start Companies. No Talk. All Action. Even more info can be found at http://startupweekend.org

This is a weekend long event. It’s ok to come and go during the weekend. On Friday night people pitch their ideas, there can be as few as 25 pitches or as many as 100, we keep on pitching until everyone is done! We do a simple vote of everyone’s favorite 2 or 3 to narrow down the ideas by about 80%. Individuals then gather around each idea to discuss feasibility. For a room of one hundred people we generally see teams between 5-10 people and a total of between 10-15 teams working away on 10-15 new startups.

At after Friday evening people come in early on Saturday and work work work for the rest of the weekend until giving a demo of the newly created startup on Sunday evening. We’ve had teams that were generating revenue on Saturday evening in the past! It’s a great learning experience, great networking, and a lot of fun to roll up your sleeves and get in the trenches launching a new startup! Hope to see you there!

We provide: 7 meals, drinks, t-shirt, software, and hosting! Anyone is invited to come!

Dec 5, 2009: AR DevCamp at Hacker Dojo

The first Augmented Reality Development Camp (AR DevCamp) will be held in the SF Bay Area December 5, 2009. After nearly 20 years in the research labs, Augmented Reality is taking shape as one of the next major waves of Internet innovation, overlaying and infusing the physical world with digital media, information and experiences. We believe AR must be fundamentally open, interoperable, extensible, and accessible to all, so that it can create the kinds of opportunities for expressiveness, communication, business and social good that we enjoy on the web and Internet today. As one step toward this goal of Open AR, we are organizing AR DevCamp 1.0, a full day of technical sessions and hacking opportunities in an open format, unconference style.

Nov 20, 2009: Real-Time CrunchUp SF at InterContinental Hotel

One of the benefits of covering new technology and startups on a daily basis is that you can see trends as they begin to swell and repeat themselves. One shift we’ve been keeping a very close eye on is the rise of realtime streams, and how they are fundamentally altering the way we communicate and interact with one another.

We are not the only ones who think this is a big deal. Back in July, TechCrunch editors Erick Schonfeld and Steve Gillmor organized a Realtime Stream CrunchUp. It was the first major realtime conference (there are a bunch of them now), and the response was overwhelming. It attracted 650 people and ended up as a launchpad for about 20 new realtime products, from Seesmic’s Web client to Pubsubhubbub (PuSH) to Brizzly (read more here).

A lot has happened since then: Facebook bought FriendFeed, Twitter raised $100 million, Google Wave launched in private beta. So Steve and I thought it would be a good time for another Realtime CrunchUp. The next one will be an all-day-event on November 20 in San Francisco.

Confimed speakers include:

* Dick Costolo, COO Twitter
* Marc Benioff, CEO and founder Salesforce
* Paul Buchheit, founder FriendFeed
* Lili Cheng, GM of FUSE Labs, Microsoft
* Ron Conway, angel investor

Real-Time Start-Ups:

If you want to launch a realtime product at the CrunchUp or have an eye-opening demo, please contact us at realtime [at] techcrunch [dot] com. We have just a few spots left.

Hope you can join us.

Sponsors:

The CrunchUp also gives us a great sponsorship platform for start-ups and brands to reach both conference and stream participants. Please contact Jeannie Logozzo or Heather Harde to learn more about sponsorship packages and custom opportunities.

Details:

Friday, November 20

Real-Time Stream CrunchUp San Francisco

Intercontinental Hotel, 888 Howard Street, Third Floor Grand Ballroom, San Francisco

9:00am - 5:30pm: Main Agenda

5:30 - 7:30 pm: Closing Reception

Nov 12, 2009: Refresh Portland November: Nick Finck on The Mobile User Experience at Jive Software

Join Refresh Portland for our last session of 2009 on mobile user experience design! This time, we have Nick Finck, Principal and Director of User Experience at Blue Flavor, coming from Seattle.

This presentation will look at how the mobile context has evolved over the years and where it is headed. We’ll explore the differences between the web and the mobile web, why these differences are important, what the key user experience principals are for the mobile web …oh yeah, and there will be plenty of examples for you to sink your teeth into. Nick will give you the information you need to design an optimal user experience for the mobile web as well as what decisions you will need to make along the way.

November is mobile web month! Be sure to check our friends at Portland Web Innovators for the marketing side of the story on November 4, where Elia Freedman will talk about A Look Back, A Look Forward:

The Vancouver iPhone Forum will bring local business leaders, educators, designers, and developers together to share knowledge, personal experience, and best practice for doing business on Apple's Touch Platform. The aim is to grow awareness of the opportunities this
revolutionary platform offers and to foster mobile innovation in the Canadian market.

There will be two parallel paths of concurrent sessions:

Technical sessions target developers and designers that seek a deeper understanding of how to design and develop
optimized websites and native apps for Apple's Touch Platform.

Business sessions target those that seek to leverage the business potential of Apple's Touch platform.

Nov 21, 2009: The 3rd Annual Vancouver TechFest at BCIT Campus

What is a TechFest?

There are a few mandates which the TechFest must follow...

1. By and For the Community

TechFest's are about the community at large. They are meant to be a place for developers AND IT Professionals to come and learn from their peers. Topics are always based on community interest and never determined by anyone other than the community.

2. Always Free

TechFest's are always free for attendees.

3. Community Developed Material

The success of the TechFest's is that they are based on community content. All content that is delivered is original. All presentation content must be provided (including any code and your slide decks). If you have content you don’t want to share or provide to attendees then the TechFest is not the place for you.

4. No Fluff

TechFest's are about getting to the nitty gritty. Refer to rule #1 if you have any questions on this.

5. Community Ownership

The most important element of the TechFest is always the community. All are welcome to attend and speak and do so without expectation of payment or any other compensation other than their participation in the community.

6. Never occur during work hours

We need to understand that many times people can’t leave work for a day or two to attend training or even seminars. The beauty of the TechFest is that they always occur on weekends.

Why not a Code Camp? What's the difference?

Well, a Code Camp is strictly focused on the Developer where our TechFest is all about Technology, any technology. We feel that IT Professionals, as well as Developers, should be given the chance to present their wares! Also, do not come to this event and expect all the presentations to focus just on Microsoft technologies. We strive to balance the content.

Mar 30, 2010: Where 2.0 at San Jose Marriott

Now in its sixth year, the Where 2.0 Conference is where the grassroots and leading edge developers building location-aware technology intersect with the businesses and entrepreneurs seeking out location apps, platforms, and hardware to gain a competitive edge. In the O'Reilly conference tradition, Where 2.0 presents leading trends rather than chasing them.

At Where 2.0, you'll find source mapping tools, reality mining, open standards for data and location web services, and sensors for obtaining location data. We'll learn how the established geo industry is reacting to the first businesses making money from their grassroots geospatial projects. There's no better place to meet the people behind the mashups, the people behind the platforms, and the people looking ahead to the future of geospatial. Join us at Where 2.0 to debate and discuss what's viable now, and what's lurking just below the radar.

Nov 18, 2009: Skillswap Goes Wayfinding at Lighthouse

Talk 1
Legible London: When is a wayfinding system the answer to a city's economic future?
Patricia Brown & Kasper de Graaf

This talk will focus on the capital's nascent wayfinding system, looking at the strategic rationale for a unified tool to support walking in the capital and an update on the development of the system so far. Read more about the Legible London project.

Talk 2
The future of wayfinding
Cennydd Bowles

We've got pretty good at helping people find their way through today's digital world. Information architecture, taking cues from physical architecture, has built a toolkit of wayfinding aids including menus, breadcrumbs, signage. But things are about to get a lot more interesting.

The boundaries between the abstract digital world and the real physical world are becoming blurred. GPS has made the A-Z map redundant. RFID chips will soon enable a world of "spimes", where our environment can tell us all about itself and how we should interact with it. Geolocation offers an immersive augmented reality where data combines with space in revolutionary ways. Our landmarks are now both physical and digital. One day, a church spire; the next, a WiFi cloud. Our old wayfinding methods will soon be as outdated as the sextant.

Even now, people are beginning to use new technology to annotate and enrich their surroundings. Location-driven technology is most powerful in the hands of local users, and it is our responsibility as designers to ensure that these systems are accessible, collaborative and safe.

Given this quantum leap, we need new approaches to wayfinding, information scent and navigation. This session will explore how we can we use information architecture to shape the chaos. How can we design systems for both the digital and physical world that allow users to orientate themselves, understand the choices available, and feel at home?

Participants will take away a new understanding of the exciting challenges ahead of us, including the role of mobile devices, the ubiquitous information age, and the privacy implications of our new location-critical lives.

How do I get a ticket?
Registration will be open from 11am on Wednesday 4th November via Eventbrite and thanks to Madgex will be absolutely free.

Dec 4, 2009: Lost Landscapes of San Francisco with Rick Prelinger at Herbst Theater

The Long Now Foundation's monthly series Seminars About Long-term Thinking
http://www.longnow.org/projects/seminars/

Rick Prelinger, a guerrilla archivist who collects the uncollected and makes it accessible, presents the fourth of his annual Lost Landscapes of San Francisco screenings. You'll see an eclectic montage of rediscovered and rarely-seen film clips showing life, landscapes, labor and leisure in a vanished San Francisco as captured by amateurs, newsreel cameramen and industrial filmmakers.

How we remember and record the past reveals much about how we address the future. Prelinger will preface the screening with a brief talk on how historical memory is shifting away from mass culture towards individual expression, and what consequences will arise from the emerging massive matrix of personal records.

The purpose of the Seminars About Long-term Thinking is to build a coherent, compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking, to help nudge civilization toward Long Now's goal of making long-term thinking automatic and common instead of difficult and rare.

Long Now Members can reserve 2 complimentary seats.
https://secure.longnow.org/members/

Join us for a reception with no-host bar following the Seminar in the main Lobby of the Herbst Theater.

Nov 17, 2009: More Accessible User Interfaces with ARIA at Skills Matter Limited

We've changed the date for this month's YDN Tuesday talk, as we have Todd Kloots coming in from the US to talk about ARIA.

ARIA is a W3C specification that can be used to dramatically improve the accessibility of DHTML widgets and rich interaction patterns (like drag and drop). This talk provides practical tips and design patterns for using ARIA to create accessible user interfaces that work across all of the various combinations of browsers and assistive technology that support ARIA.
Additionally, this talk will focus on the tools and methodologies developers need to test ARIA in order to ensure the best possible user experience.

Please register for this free event at SkillsMatter's website:
