Jul 27, 2008: gONNA gET gOT at Mercury Lounge

"Hip Hop Punk Pop... New Wave Rap..." However you choose to describe it, gONNA gET gOT''s unlikely collision of sound is providing sustenance to that peculiar strain of music fan out there looking for something different. From Goth fans to punk-rockers, hip-hop heads to dead-heads, teen-age girls to MILFs and beyond... Brooklyn's own gONNA gET gOT's appeal crosses boundary after boundary. With their music being played nationally in Hot Topic stores (and on sale in NYC area shops), an appearance at Warped Tour July 26 and a regional tour in August, the band is poised to do big things indeed.

Jul 31, 2008: Upstairs at the Square: AIMEE MANN + JOSEPH O'NEILL at Barnes & Noble Union Square

NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 30 – Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, today announced the next event in its buzzed-about series, “Upstairs at the Square,” held at the Union Square Barnes & Noble in Manhattan (33 East 17th Street at Union Square). On Thursday, July 31st, at 7 pm, Aimee Mann, whose new album is @#%&*! Smilers (SuperEgo), and Joseph O’Neill, author of Netherland (Pantheon, May 2008), discuss and perform their work in conversation with journalist Katherine Lanpher, who hosts the program. Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Aimee Mann (www.aimeemann.com) songs have a literary quality to them – sharp, spare short stories set to music. From her work in the 80s with MTV favorite ’Til Tuesday, through her acclaimed solo discs Whatever and I’m With Stupid in the 90s, Aimee Mann has always been at the forefront of contemporary songwriters. The close of the millennium brought her breakout success, with the simultaneous releases of Bachelor No. 2 and the soundtrack to the film Magnolia, which garnered nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and three Grammys. With a songcraft often compared with the Beatles and Badfinger, Mann frequently pairs the bleakest of poetry with soaring, infectious melodies. Mann continued her solo career with the 2002 release of Lost in Space the second release on her own SuperEgo Records. In 2006 Mann released The Forgotten Arm, a critically acclaimed concept album that follows the story of two lovers who meet at the Virginia State Fair. Aimee Mann also released a Christmas album titled One More Drifter In The Snow. Her new album, @#%&*! Smilers, has been released to rave reviews, including five stars from MOJO, which pronounced it, “a masterpiece from a songwriter who’s quietly chronicling the blanched last days of a sunshine empire.” NPR noted, “Mann has carved out a presence as a consistently top-shelf chronicler of human desires and failings... [@#%&*! Smilers is] another look at dark and eccentric characters, complete with introspective looks at heartbreak, fading hope, and even Virginia carnivals.”

In The New York Times Book Review, Dwight Garner called Netherland, “the wittiest, angriest, most exacting and most desolate work of fiction we’ve yet had about life in New York and London after the World Trade Center fell. On a micro level, it’s about a couple and their young son living in Lower Manhattan when the planes hit, and about the event’s rippling emotional aftermath in their lives. On a macro level, it’s about nearly everything: family, politics, identity. I devoured it in three thirsty gulps, gulps that satisfied a craving I didn’t know I had.” The New Yorker noted that “Netherland has opened where The Great Gatsby ends.” Joseph O’Neill was born in Ireland and raised primarily in Holland. He received a law degree from Cambridge University and worked as a barrister in London. He writes regularly for The Atlantic Monthly and is the author of two previous novels, This Is the Life and The Breezes, and a family history, Blood-Dark-Track, which was a New York Times Notable Book. He lives with his family in New York City.

Katherine Lanpher (www.katherinelanpher.com) is an award-winning print and broadcast journalist. Springboard Press published her first book, Leap Days.

“Upstairs at the Square,” which celebrated its two-year anniversary this June, has paired authors such as William Gibson, Tom Wolfe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, David Lynch, Anna Gavalda, Min Jin Lee, and Armistead Maupin with musicians including Craig Finn, Duncan Sheik and members of the cast of Spring Awakening, Badly Drawn Boy, Sondre Lerche, Au Revoir Simone, Nicole Atkins, Martha Wainwright and more. An archive of recordings is available on Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com/upstairs), where “Upstairs at the Square” is enjoyed by listeners around the world in addition to its live audiences.

Sep 1, 2008: Brooklyn Labor Day Parade and Carnival at Eastern Parkway at Franklin Avenue

Officially named the West Indian American Day Carnival, this is the Biggest parade, street fair or festival in New York City, simply the biggest cultural event of the year.

The parade is held in Brooklyn's historic Crown Heights neighborhood. The parade route begins at the corner of Rochester & Eastern Parkway and ends near the Grand Army Plaza where non-masqueraders can jump up with the bands.

There are hundreds of floats and huge (loud!) sound trucks many with live performers, tens of "carnival krewes" in rainbow-hued, peacock-feather-enhanced costumes, many masqueraders and hundreds of food and goods stands make this celebration of Caribbean life in New York City the highpoint of the festival year.

There will be plenty of food to taste on Carnival Day. All of Eastern Parkway will be host to various dishes from every Caribbean island. There will be stands lined up along the service roads selling jerk chicken, chicken stew, fried chicken, beef stew, oxtail, rice and peas, salad, macaroni pie, fried flying fish, curry goat, roti, callaloo, souse, salt fish, fried bake, coconut bread, and much more. There is plenty to choose from, whatever your diet may be.

Additionally there are stands of vendors lined up selling foods, crafts, books, clothing, art, jewelry, and much more.

A Few Tips from the The West Indian-American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA):

1.) Come out early. The parade gets bigger each year with over 3 million participants on the Parkway. Police crowd barriers make it difficult to walk around, so you should find a good spot early where you can see clearly. You should be very patient; the thickness of the crowd makes things move slowly.

2.) Dress comfortably. Wear shoes that you can walk long distances in. people will be stepping on your toes so open toe sandals are not recommended.

3.) Drink plenty of water. The sun will be on your head for hours, coupled with the crowds; it is easy to get dehydrated. Some people have been known to faint from being overwhelmed with heat so it is important to stay cool.

4.) Bring your flag! Represent your country with your national flag or rag. Don?t be the one left out!

5.) Get plenty of rest. For those who are going to J'Ouvert the night before, playing mas, or both, it is imperative to get enough rest before going on the Parkway. People have suffered from exhaustion and dehydration in the past.

6.) HAVE FUN! Carnival time is a time for celebration. There is no room for sour faces. Come out and enjoy yourselves.

The people are all out for a great time and there are not many of the disturbances that have been associated with other parades in the past few years. Most folk seem to go out of their way to avoid problems -- everyone knows that it's hot and sticky and crowded and noisy -- and they make the best of it
Tips On the Best Places to see the Parade Courtesy of Jim's Deli: Some people think the best place to view the parade is between the Brooklyn Museum and Grand Army Plaza. True, this area gives some great views, but you miss half the fun.

We much prefer getting off the subway at the Franklin Avenue stop and walking East along Eastern Parkway for a few blocks, crossing over to the North side of the Parkway, then walking back West toward Grand Army Plaza
