Covers how to operate a digital video camera techniques for shooting short films, documentaries and low budget features.

Taught by an award-winning cinematographer and held in a professional film studio, this workshop goes through all the controls and menus of a Sony XDCAM EX1 digital camera.

We show you how to set up a camera, head and tripod. We show you how to operate the camera plus manually set exposure, white balance, focus, audio levels, zebra, time code etc.

It will help you get to grips with the nuts and bolts of digital cinematography.

On many low-budget documentary films, you will frequently be the only crew so you have to know how to shoot and edit a film on your own. This workshop tells you exactly how!

Covering:

Pre-production:
Writing a proposal, preparing a budget and schedule, sources of finance, writing a documentary script, hiring the right kit, organising the location and a check-list of what to take with you. Plus choosing the right documentary style – whether it is a first person authored film, observational documentary or !

The shoot:
Practical demonstrations on how to set up the camera, basic lighting and sound, how to shoot sequences, cut-aways and how to interview your subject including what questions to ask and how to ask them!

Post-production:
Preparing transcripts of interviews, viewing rushes, how to paper edit, how to organise your off-line edit and basic editing principles, writing voice-over, choosing music, graphics, client/audience viewings, off-line changes, on-line, grade and finishing your film!

This is the perfect first step if you are thinking about making your first film and you want to know the basics of how to write a script and direct actors.

After practical exercises covering the basics of writing screenplays and directing actors for film, everyone will write their own short script and direct actors to perform their script!

On writing: practical exercises and discussions covering coming up with a great concept, creating great characters, constructing narrative arcs, dramatic themes, genre, style, classic script structures & format.

On directing actors: practical exercises and discussions covering rehearsals, blocking scenes, actor motivations and directing actors on set, including vital “quick-fixes” to get a believable performance from your actors.

The aim is to write a short 2-3 page film script and then to bring the words to life by directing your fellow classmates as characters in your script.

The day culminates in a performance of your script which will be filmed. A DVD of the performances and full set of handouts will be provided after the workshop.

This is your chance to either be the director or the cinematographer (DoP) on a short film shot in a film studio with professional equipment and two working actors. It is an ideal opportunity to add to your showreel!

There are ONLY 8 PLACES AVAILABLE: FOUR directors & FOUR cinematographers.

You must email us to register your interest and let us know if you want to participate as a director or cinematographer.

Directors

Directors will have 90 minutes to direct a short film or scene they have written themselves. The script needs to be 2-3 pages and supplied 2 weeks in advance to allow the actors to learn their lines. The scripts will need to have two characters, one male and one female. The films will all be shot in the film studio with two professional actors using any props you might wish to bring.

The directors will also act as assistant director, script supervisor/continuity and art director on the other participants film.

Cinematographers

Cinematographers will be paired up with a director and will have the chance to be the Director of Photography on the short film for the 90 minutes allotted to shoot the film. As Director of Photography, you will be responsible for deciding where the lights go, the mood and shooting style and also will liaise with a director to discuss shot-lists and storyboards to decide camera position and types of shot.

DoP’s will then act as Camera Operator, Camera Assistant and Sound Operator on other people’s scenes.

With health and safety in mind, award-winning cinematographer Alex Wakeford will act as Gaffer for all DoP’s.

DVD

We will supply a DVD of the rushes as well as an edited version of the finished films.

In the weeks leading up to this workshop we will pair up the director/DoP teams and we will be available via email to work with the directors and DoP’s to ensure everyone achieves exactly what they want from their films.

The ride usually goes along the beach from the west wall of Brighton Marina to the King Alfred Centre and beyond (or vice versa), or as far as you and your bike can make it.

Time and tide wait for no-one, so if you can't make it to the start, join the ride en route. The ride sets off 30 minutes after meeting, so as to catch the lowest tide and the sunrise. If starting from the Marina, the ride will probably pass under Brighton Pier another 30 minutes after that, if you'd like to meet there.

Following August 2007's Low Tide Naked Critical Mash-Up bike ride, the event is clothing-optional, and riders often go for a skinny-dip in the sea at the end of the ride.

For evening rides, participants can adjourn for drinks afterwards at The Neptune pub.

Bring bikes, waterproofs, warm clothes, towels and lights. Remember to thoroughly wash the salt and sand off your bike afterwards. If you're worried about using your own bike, pick a scrap one up from a skip.
