Aug 29, 2008: Play: Exploring the UX Dimensions of Video Games Design at Jury's Inn

The Games industry has created a whole series of challenges for games developers and designers. Games narratives, structures and controls have got to a level of complexity that offers new ground for inventing and developing different methods of interacting with games.

To be successfull, in such a crowded and competitive industry, games developers must consider the context of experience.

Unlike traditional software, where more traditional performance metrics can be applied, measuring experential dimensions such as 'fun' and 'playability' becomes a daunting task. Games are a tremendously varied set of applications, defying a one-size-fits-all approach. Even a broad and relevant concept such as flow falls short of capturing all classes of game experience.

'Play' will go beyond simple usability issues exploring different dimensions of User Experience that make games enjojable.

Use8 events are informal and tend to create an open atmosphere conducive to discussion and networking. A good mix of creative businesses, professionals and students are expected to attend. The event will be held on the 29th of August at the Jurys Inn Hotel - Brighton UK. The event is free to attend but you need to register.

Sep 24, 2008: 3D Virtual Reality Technology for Cultural Heritage: More than computer games at the Regency Town House

This free-to-attend event will be a great opportunity to talk with people from IT, museums and cultural organisations who share a common interest in intergrating technology and culture.

We will start off with a short talk on:

” 3D Virtual Reality Technology for Cultural Heritage: More than computer games”

Speaker: Karina Rodriguez Echavarria, Research Fellow, University of Brighton.

The use of 3D technology for Cultural Heritage is becoming increasingly popular. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of understanding of its potential and how to use it in order to enhance the documentation, research and communication of Cultural Heritage. Hence, many people still refer this technology mainly to “computer games” without considering other prospective uses.

This presentation will describe 3D Virtual Reality technology in a friendly way. It will also encourage discussion on ways in which this technology can contribute to the heritage sector as well as support and challenge visitors’ interpretation of the heritage displayed in museums and cultural sites.

There is no bar, but you can bring your own drinks.

So feel free to bring drinks for yourself and to share!

Sep 1, 2008: Low Tide Sunset Bike Ride at Brighton Pier

Note: This is an evening ride, and goes from East to West!

For those of us who either couldn't be bothered to wake up early enough to attend the Sunrise Ride, or who just can't get enough of group cycling along the beach, here's another fun cycle dash over the exposed sand flats during one of the lowest tides of the year.

Meet on the exposed sand just to the East of Brighton Pier from 6.00pm. We will set up promptly at 6.30pm so that we're well underway by low tide at 7.17pm. The ride goes from the pier westwards towards the sunset. We should be able to pass by the West Pier and the King Alfred Leisure Centre, and we'll keep going until we run out of sand! (one year we managed to get right past FatBoy's house then about half-way to Shoreham Power Station...)

We often go for a swim/skinny-dip in the sea at the end of the ride.

Bring bikes, waterproofs, warm clothes, towels and lights. Remember to thoroughly wash the salt and sand off your bike afterwards. If you're worried about using your own bike, pick a scrap one up from a skip.

Sep 25, 2008: CFDevCon 2008 - the coldfusion centric web development conference at Hilton Brighton Metropole

A Conference by Developers, for Developers.

The first ever CFDevCon was in November 2006 and was started by Russ Michaels. His original goal was to bring to the UK what the Americans had been enjoying for years through cfunited, cf:objective and other ColdFusion related conferences. Like many developers Russ either did not have the time or the money to make the trip to the USA for these conferences, so decided to make his own. Thanks to the membership of his existing community CFDeveloper, getting the word out was not too difficult.

The first CFDevCon was a resounding success with around 200 attendees, which rivaled the first ever cfunited in the USA. This was quite a feat, considering how tiny the UK is compared to the USA, and how few developers we have in comparison.

Sep 15, 2008: Performance Testing - A Heuristic Approach (3 day course) at The Werks

This is a 3 day Performance Testing course presented by Scott Barber.

To be presented in Brighton in May. Final date, location and prices to be confirmed very soon.

Only rarely are sufficient time, resources and skilled individuals available to teams who are developing commercially driven software systems to effectively apply rigorous approaches to performance test that system. In cases where applying rigorous approaches would not be effective, a risk-based, flexible approach to performance testing is needed. Rigorous or not, any approach to performance testing needs to focus on collecting the data necessary both to assist the development team in identifying, prioritizing, and tuning areas of sub-optimal performance and to assist stakeholders in making sound business decisions related to performance risks.

In this course, you will learn:

* Nine core principles found in most successful performance testing projects
* Concise, universal heuristics and models for rapid application of those principles
* How to determine and apply oracles to software system performance criteria
* How to apply the core principles into your team’s development process
* How to plan ahead without reducing your ability to react to change
* How to communicate performance testing concepts to non-performance testers
* How to rapidly design performance tests that will achieve your performance testing objectives
