Aug 9, 2008: Jacques Leslie: A Water Watcher's Education at Red Hill Books

A Water Watcher's Education
Saturday, August 9 - 7:00PM

Jacques Leslie will discuss today's global water situation. Renowned reporter and writer, Mr. Lesilie is uniquely posed to offer what we must understand to create critical, decisive change. He will read from his Harper's Magazine cover story on water scarcity, his book Deep Water, and other recent investigative work.

It was water and the damming of water which created the contemporary struggles between our industries and our natural world. The conflicts still rage where they started here at Hetch-Hetchy and continue on globally where the consequences are pertinent to us all.

For the last decade Jacques Leslie has been writing narrative nonfiction about the world’s most pressing environmental problems. His Harper’s Magazine cover story, “Running Dry: What Happens When the World Runs Short of Freshwater?” was included in The Best American Science Writing 2001 and was a finalist for the John B. Oakes award in environmental journalism. Leslie continues his exploration of water issues in his book, Deep Water: The Epic Struggle Over Dams, Displaced People, and the Environment, published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Deep Water won the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award, was named one of the top science books of the year by Discover Magazine, and was a finalist for the Northern California Book Award in nonfiction. His most recent extended effort is the cover story of Mother Jones Magazine’s January/February 2008 issue, called “The Last Empire: Can the world survive China’s rush to emulate the American way of life?” A letter to the editor called it “the best article I've read in the last 10 years—on any subject—in any magazine.”

Mr. Leslie began his journalism career covering the Vietnam War for the Los Angeles Times. He won the Sigma Delta Chi award for foreign correspondence and an Overseas Press Club citation for his work during two years in Vietnam and Cambodia. He was also expelled from South Vietnam after reporting numerous exclusive stories, including becoming the first American journalist to enter and return from Viet Cong territory in South Vietnam. After Vietnam, he was stationed successively in Phnom Penh, Washington, New Delhi, Madrid, and Hong Kong, and was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He wrote a book about his experiences called The Mark: A War Correspondent’s Memoir of Vietnam and Cambodia, published in 1995. He also won the 2006 Drunken Boat Pan-Literary Award in Nonfiction for a narrative nonfiction story about a shoe repairman in his home town, Mill Valley, California.

Aug 15, 2008: BarCamp Grand Rapids 3 at Calvin College

BarCamp Grand Rapids, inspired by the Silicon Valley event that rocked the emerging technology world with its audacity and success, will take place on August 15-16 at Calvin College.

The original Palo Alto BarCamp was born out of frustration with the stifling atmosphere of most conferences. In a bold move, the founders decided to hold an "unconference" and let the attendees decide the schedule and topics to be presented. The organizers provided only a venue, a blank schedule board, and some overhead projectors: attendees were responsible for creating all the content, giving all the presentations, and having all the fun. The experiment was a resounding success, and BarCamps in Toronto, Amsterdam, and New York City soon followed. BarCamp Grand Rapids continues this proud tradition, for the third year running.

Calvin College is generously donating classroom space, including a space for a "campout" Friday night. Gordon Food Service, Subway, and Biggby Coffee will be providing food for the event, and SageTech will be hosting a get-together after the Friday night sessions. Elevator Up has also pitched in to help keep to conference free for all attendees.

Jul 29, 2008: Kotoworld - Elizabeth Falconer at Red Hill Books

c
Tuesday, July 29 - 7:00PM

Wind in the Bamboo
Year of the Mouse!

Koto master Elizabeth Falconer will grace Red Hill on Tuesday evening, July 29th with a beautiful show of music and stories. Be sure to bring kids to hear Japanese mouse stories and more, as Elizabeth and her six-foot dragon instrument called Koto share music and engaging puppet stories. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

Listen to the sounds of the zen shakuhachi bamboo flute and the classical Japanese koto harp in a mesmerizing program of music and poetry. Haiku poems by well-known Japanese poets are interwoven into the music of Duo En, a husband-wife performance duo who have lived in Japan for over a decade. A unique and inspired layering of culture by two Seattle-based artists touring the Bay Area.

Elizabeth Falconer has has earned numerous awards for her work combining Japanese folktales with original koto music and has produced over 10 albums on her label, Koto World. She enjoys collaborating with various artists and taking her koto into new situations, and has tourned internationally. She has performed her stories at the Smithsonian, numerous libraries, museums, schools and festivals. She can also be found performing with her husband John in the koto-shakuhachi Duo En in venues from small teahouses to international festivals. (More information is available at the EN website, www.duoen.com.)
Her elusive goal in life is to have the kitchen counter cleaned up for more than one day but so far, she has not been able to do it.

Jul 26, 2008: Goodnight Bush: A Parody By Gan Golan & Erich Origen- Book Launch Party at Red Hill Books

Goodnight Bush: A Parody By Gan Golan & Erich Origen- Book Launch Party
Saturday, July 26 - 7:00PM

Mooning George Bush on his way out the door, we invite all to party with authors and illustrators of the brilliant new parody, Goodnight Bush at Red Hill.

The book rewards you handsomely for paying attention to both the details of Margaret Wise Brown's beloved children's classic and the details of George W. Bush's reviled, childlike national nightmare. It's got tons of sight gags and a text that is right on target.

It's authors, Erich Origen and Gan Golan will be on hand at Red Hill to talk about the making of the ultimate parody of not only a children's classic, but of a rather storied administration that is way past its bedtime. "Goodnight Constitution. Goodnight evolution."

Since Red Hill can throw out a grand old party with the best of them, Erich and Gan will be offering quite a bit of excitement before it's lights out. So come have some food, drink, enjoy some music and say goodnight!

Oct 4, 2008: Design for the Other 90% at Ontario College of Art & Design

The Professional Gallery of the Ontario College of Art & Design hosts a collection of design solutions addressing the basic needs of poor and marginalized populations not traditionally serviced by professional designers.

The exhibition, organized by the New York-based Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and curated by Cynthia E. Smith, explores a growing movement among designers to design low-cost solutions for the “other 90%” — that is, the 5.8 billion people (out of the world’s total population of 6.5 billion people) who have little or no access to most of the products and services many of us take for granted. Design for the Other 90% looks at how individuals and organizations are finding unique ways to address the basic challenges of survival and progress — for example, nearly half of the other 90% do not have regular access to food, clean water, or shelter.

“Unconventionally, this exhibition highlights products that are economically self-sustaining, yet affordable to people living on a dollar a day — inexpensive irrigation systems for farming, for instance,” says Charles Reeve, Curator of the Professional Gallery. “The new forms of ingenuity here focus on pressing issues like poverty relief and environmental sustainability, both of which are key themes in what we teach and research here at OCAD.”

Launching as part of OCAD’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche programming, Toronto is the only Canadian stop for the touring exhibition. An extensive website, including a blog, discussion forum and additional resources is available at http://other90.cooperhewitt.org/.

In addition to the exhibition at the OCAD Professional Gallery, the Design Exchange will present a complementary program of exhibits and events as part of Design for the Other 90%.

Jul 31, 2008: Upstairs at the Square: AIMEE MANN + JOSEPH O'NEILL at Barnes & Noble Union Square

NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 30 – Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, today announced the next event in its buzzed-about series, “Upstairs at the Square,” held at the Union Square Barnes & Noble in Manhattan (33 East 17th Street at Union Square). On Thursday, July 31st, at 7 pm, Aimee Mann, whose new album is @#%&*! Smilers (SuperEgo), and Joseph O’Neill, author of Netherland (Pantheon, May 2008), discuss and perform their work in conversation with journalist Katherine Lanpher, who hosts the program. Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Aimee Mann (www.aimeemann.com) songs have a literary quality to them – sharp, spare short stories set to music. From her work in the 80s with MTV favorite ’Til Tuesday, through her acclaimed solo discs Whatever and I’m With Stupid in the 90s, Aimee Mann has always been at the forefront of contemporary songwriters. The close of the millennium brought her breakout success, with the simultaneous releases of Bachelor No. 2 and the soundtrack to the film Magnolia, which garnered nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and three Grammys. With a songcraft often compared with the Beatles and Badfinger, Mann frequently pairs the bleakest of poetry with soaring, infectious melodies. Mann continued her solo career with the 2002 release of Lost in Space the second release on her own SuperEgo Records. In 2006 Mann released The Forgotten Arm, a critically acclaimed concept album that follows the story of two lovers who meet at the Virginia State Fair. Aimee Mann also released a Christmas album titled One More Drifter In The Snow. Her new album, @#%&*! Smilers, has been released to rave reviews, including five stars from MOJO, which pronounced it, “a masterpiece from a songwriter who’s quietly chronicling the blanched last days of a sunshine empire.” NPR noted, “Mann has carved out a presence as a consistently top-shelf chronicler of human desires and failings... [@#%&*! Smilers is] another look at dark and eccentric characters, complete with introspective looks at heartbreak, fading hope, and even Virginia carnivals.”

In The New York Times Book Review, Dwight Garner called Netherland, “the wittiest, angriest, most exacting and most desolate work of fiction we’ve yet had about life in New York and London after the World Trade Center fell. On a micro level, it’s about a couple and their young son living in Lower Manhattan when the planes hit, and about the event’s rippling emotional aftermath in their lives. On a macro level, it’s about nearly everything: family, politics, identity. I devoured it in three thirsty gulps, gulps that satisfied a craving I didn’t know I had.” The New Yorker noted that “Netherland has opened where The Great Gatsby ends.” Joseph O’Neill was born in Ireland and raised primarily in Holland. He received a law degree from Cambridge University and worked as a barrister in London. He writes regularly for The Atlantic Monthly and is the author of two previous novels, This Is the Life and The Breezes, and a family history, Blood-Dark-Track, which was a New York Times Notable Book. He lives with his family in New York City.

Katherine Lanpher (www.katherinelanpher.com) is an award-winning print and broadcast journalist. Springboard Press published her first book, Leap Days.

“Upstairs at the Square,” which celebrated its two-year anniversary this June, has paired authors such as William Gibson, Tom Wolfe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, David Lynch, Anna Gavalda, Min Jin Lee, and Armistead Maupin with musicians including Craig Finn, Duncan Sheik and members of the cast of Spring Awakening, Badly Drawn Boy, Sondre Lerche, Au Revoir Simone, Nicole Atkins, Martha Wainwright and more. An archive of recordings is available on Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com/upstairs), where “Upstairs at the Square” is enjoyed by listeners around the world in addition to its live audiences.

About Barnes & Noble, Inc.

Aug 29, 2008: Con-X-treme at San Mateo Marriott San Francisco Airport Hotel

Promoting the creation of animation and all things Media.

WHAT IS CON-X-TREME?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CON-X-TREME is volunteer-run event held this year over the extended Labor Day weekend at the San Mateo Marriott Hotel. The primary area of emphasis is focused on the creation of art and other media, traditional and non-traditional, without the limitation of holding true to a certain theme or topic.
While some may view this as simply it is another anime or science fiction convention event, the real opportunities this event brings forward is an opportunity for fans of all mediums to meet and network with both other fans and professionals alike. Whether it be physical art, virtual art, film & television, video games or music, CON-X-TREME attempts to have compelling, knowledgeable, and well-spoken Guests of Honor who are willing to spend time sharing their experiences within their respective industries, mentoring our attendees through discussion panels, classroom instruction, and other programming events.
Throughout each day of the weekend event, CON-X-TREME presents curriculum through a series of classroom programming where event members may participate in the discussion or hands-on study of particular subjects.
CON-X-TREME is not all classrooms, lectures, and study however, as we temper much of the proceeding with many other programming alternatives including, but not limited to, the following:
v A 24-hour anime programming room featuring professional and fan-created animation videos and programs;
v A room dedicated to premiering the latest in console and computer video games and technology;
v Dedicated space for costume gatherings and workshops which will culminate in a full costume contest event;
v Event space which promotes and displays artwork from many of the Bay Area’s most vibrant and popular artists;
All in all, CON-X-TREME aspires to provide opportunities for the truly creative side of fans and professionals to mix freely within an environment which inspires creativity and spontaneity.
