Aug 9, 2008: Jacques Leslie: A Water Watcher's Education at Red Hill Books

A Water Watcher's Education
Saturday, August 9 - 7:00PM

Jacques Leslie will discuss today's global water situation. Renowned reporter and writer, Mr. Lesilie is uniquely posed to offer what we must understand to create critical, decisive change. He will read from his Harper's Magazine cover story on water scarcity, his book Deep Water, and other recent investigative work.

It was water and the damming of water which created the contemporary struggles between our industries and our natural world. The conflicts still rage where they started here at Hetch-Hetchy and continue on globally where the consequences are pertinent to us all.

For the last decade Jacques Leslie has been writing narrative nonfiction about the world’s most pressing environmental problems. His Harper’s Magazine cover story, “Running Dry: What Happens When the World Runs Short of Freshwater?” was included in The Best American Science Writing 2001 and was a finalist for the John B. Oakes award in environmental journalism. Leslie continues his exploration of water issues in his book, Deep Water: The Epic Struggle Over Dams, Displaced People, and the Environment, published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Deep Water won the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award, was named one of the top science books of the year by Discover Magazine, and was a finalist for the Northern California Book Award in nonfiction. His most recent extended effort is the cover story of Mother Jones Magazine’s January/February 2008 issue, called “The Last Empire: Can the world survive China’s rush to emulate the American way of life?” A letter to the editor called it “the best article I've read in the last 10 years—on any subject—in any magazine.”

Mr. Leslie began his journalism career covering the Vietnam War for the Los Angeles Times. He won the Sigma Delta Chi award for foreign correspondence and an Overseas Press Club citation for his work during two years in Vietnam and Cambodia. He was also expelled from South Vietnam after reporting numerous exclusive stories, including becoming the first American journalist to enter and return from Viet Cong territory in South Vietnam. After Vietnam, he was stationed successively in Phnom Penh, Washington, New Delhi, Madrid, and Hong Kong, and was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He wrote a book about his experiences called The Mark: A War Correspondent’s Memoir of Vietnam and Cambodia, published in 1995. He also won the 2006 Drunken Boat Pan-Literary Award in Nonfiction for a narrative nonfiction story about a shoe repairman in his home town, Mill Valley, California.

Sep 18, 2008: Global Exchange Turns 20! at Bimbo's 365

Celebrate Global Exchange's 20 Years of Resisting Injustice, Envisioning Alternatives & Taking Action!

Come party with a leading international human rights organization making significant contributions toward achieving a just, peaceful and sustainable world!

20 years ago our founders--a nutritionist, a welder and an academic--sat together on a red striped futon in Noe Valley and envisioned the future of Global Exchange. "We wanted to create and organization that would act as a catalyst to inspire people to get involved in the international movement," says co-founder Kirsten Moller.

Global Exchange has made great strides in transforming the global economy from profit-centered to people-centered--from currency to community. We are proud to have helped shut down the World Trade Organization in Seattle, won a $20 million sweatshop settlement against 26 major clothing retailers and organized the first-ever international observation of US elections.

Come celebrate! Enjoy dinner; dancing; a silent auction with art, green & fair trade goods and opportunities for adventure. Support the organization working arduously for the change you want to see in the world, and have a fantastic time doing it! We can't wait to celebrate our 20 years in the movement and all the common goals that bind us together.

Can't make the Event, but still want to help us Celebrate?

1. Become a co-sponsor! Sponsorships range from $1000-$30,000. For details and privileges contact: Kristin@glaobalexchange.org
2. Place and Ad in our Souvenir Journal: given to attendees and displayed in our Fair Trade Stores: San Francisco and Berkeley
3. Make an In-Kind Donation to our Silent Auction and be listed on our website and in our Souvenir Journal

$150 before August 1st, $175 after.

Sep 22, 2008: Die-in Montréal 2008 at Square Phillips

Sep 10, 2008: Climate Change in Yosemite: Patterns of Environmental Change at Yosemite National Park

Scientists have studied changes in climate and environmental patterns for decades. More recently, the issue has been elevated to a higher public profile. Multiple research projects are tracing patterns of environmental change to climate change and using predictive models to give a glimpse of future rates of change and resultant effects on the vegetation and animals.

Yosemite National Park is an area of interest, having elevations of over 9,000 feet, and is also extensively studied with historical records. Within the park, biologists have completed a detailed update of vegetation maps and have recently finished a 100-year resurvey of vertebrates, mapping both the historical and current ranges. When these maps are compared to maps of climate change, it suggests that ranges and climate changes may be linked. In these complex systems, there are several factors affecting distribution and changes in both flora and fauna but climate change is one factor that can be extensively measured.

Join our team of high Sierra experts as we explore how the patterns of environmental and biotic changes may be tied to a changing climate and understand how their research affects management decisions. We will examine the Tuolumne Meadows, Tioga Crest, and the Sierra's eastern slopes to better understand the detected changes. Lectures, examination of regional photo retakes, and field site visits will illustrate how scientists are documenting the role of climate in this environment.

Workshop Instructors:
***Connie Millar ~ Sierra Nevada Research Center, PSW Research Station, USDA Forest Service
***Jessica Lundquist ~ Assistant Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Washington
***Guest lecture by David Graber ~ Chief Scientist, Pacific West Region, National Park Service

Course fee includes accommodations, meals, park fees, and transportation for the duration of the workshop. Camping will be on private property with running water and flush toilets.

$550 Friends of the Jepson Herbarium members / $575 non-members.

Jul 29, 2008: Clean Tech Breakfast Series 4: Energy Storage at AMD Commons Building

Series Description:

SDForum, in conjunction with Astia, has launched its 2008 Clean Tech Breakfast Series for a third year in a row. You are invited to attend the fourth breakfast: "Energy Storage" to take place July 29th at 8:00 am to 10:00 am in Silicon Valley, at AMD. We are pleased to announce that The Clean Tech Breakfast Series is being sponsored by Nixon Peabody and Moss Adams.

Topic Description:

Energy storage is relevant to all of the following areas: chemical, electrochemical, electrical, mechanical and thermal energy. Two of the most popular areas for discussion are water storage and electrical storage. There are several current storage methodologies in use in each of these areas. This panel will touch on some of the currently used methods as well as new technologies currently being researched or tried around the country.

Energy storage has many critical roles to play in securing our energy future. Among the issues we will address in this session are:

* What are the pros and cons of a national (or state) electrical storage system much like the national Petroleum Reserve?
* What programs are developing for the storage of solar and wind power?
* Would an electric power storage system help to stabilize electricity markets?
* Would an emphasis on energy storage make renewable energy more economically viable and more widely used?
