During PICNIC, which takes place from 24-26 September at Amsterdam, TheNextWomen will organize a Breakfast & Brainstorm Camp for Female Internet Heroes in the morning of September 25, 2008. (breakfast 8.00-9.00 and brainstorm 9.00 am to 12.00 am)

The Female BRAINSTORM CAMP, organized by thenextwomen.com is open to 20 women, be it web designers, entrepreneurs, investors, marketeers or web developers.

The group will engage in creative collaboration, brainstorming to develop a business idea into a business plan. The idea and business should be aimed at women, such as a community for women, product for women, technology aimed at women or media aimed at women.

Participants will come up with a name, product, website, marketing, sales and community plan. All plans can then be presented to the group and a panel of entrepreneurs will provide feedback on their viability, originality and marketability. The best business plan will have the opportunity to be further developed after PICNIC.

As a brief thought experiment, you are invited to participate in a predicting exercise.

A small group of thinkers have been asked to make as many predictions as they want based on powers of ten - 1 year into the future, 10 years into the future and 100 years into the future. These predictions can be as simple or as complex as you foresee and from any discipline.

The day before dConstruct, all of us who are around will meet for an hour or so (location TBD) and read through some of the more interesting predictions. Hopefully, this will be a jumping-off point for further discussions, provoke new in sites and debate.

If you wish to participate, simply submit the form on the event homepage with your predictions.

The plan is to distill the discussion and predictions into a small PDF as a free download, further taking the ideas to more participants.

Much of this has been inspired by a 1900 article from Ladies' Home Journal where they made predictions about the year 2000. There is a scan of the original article as well as a retyped and annotated version. (linked from the event homepage) Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near has also played apart in the interest of how really badly we generally are at estimating.

We'll try and squeeze the meetup in between the dConstruct workshops and the Pre-dConstruct pre-party Burgers! Then on to the dConstruct pre-party..

The Games industry has created a whole series of challenges for games developers and designers. Games narratives, structures and controls have got to a level of complexity that offers new ground for inventing and developing different methods of interacting with games.

To be successfull, in such a crowded and competitive industry, games developers must consider the context of experience.

Unlike traditional software, where more traditional performance metrics can be applied, measuring experential dimensions such as 'fun' and 'playability' becomes a daunting task. Games are a tremendously varied set of applications, defying a one-size-fits-all approach. Even a broad and relevant concept such as flow falls short of capturing all classes of game experience.

'Play' will go beyond simple usability issues exploring different dimensions of User Experience that make games enjojable.

Use8 events are informal and tend to create an open atmosphere conducive to discussion and networking. A good mix of creative businesses, professionals and students are expected to attend. The event will be held on the 29th of August at the Jurys Inn Hotel - Brighton UK. The event is free to attend but you need to register.

The moment when the new technologies of photography, film, and the mass distribution of images upset the social and cultural practices of the 20th century is especially striking in Russia, where artistic experiments coincided with great social cataclysms and the search for a new expressivity of the body produced sometimes unparalleled results. As the Revolution disrupted social norms and traditions, Soviet society experienced a radical change in the gestural code. The abolition of gestural restraints was interpreted as the liberation of natural man: bad manners were re-evaluated as socially acceptable behavior, some body techniques that had been contained within the private space – like washing or calisthenics – were now accepted in the public sphere, and some gestures from the public sphere were transplanted to very private settings. The Soviet cinema, which had to reflect and invent a new social model, used very eclectic sources: the rhetorical gestures of political leaders, the symbolic gestures of the imperial code, the eloquent gestures of theatrical melodrama, the new gestures of decadent flamboyant hysterical bodies, the body language of American film stars, sports culture, and Taylorism.

Film proposed utopian, sometimes contradictory models of the new body behavior that should be imitated in reality. A new society striving to free itself from old rituals was developing a new design of clothing and living spaces, new standards of perception, and a new body language for a new anthropological type: homo soveticus, a specific version of a man of modernity.

The hugely popular "un-conference" is back and being held in leafy Richmond right by the Thames - hopefully we'll have some great weather!
