Event Objectives:

1. Showcase new or uncommon hobbies / various games to the public.
2. Create Awareness for these hobbies.
3. A place for hobby enthusiasts to gather.
4. Engage and educate the public about the benefits of these hobbies.
5. Be a platform for young aspiring hobby enthusiasts to showcase their talent in their respective hobbies.

What is Hobbycon?

A hobby is a spare-time recreation pursuit. It may stretch from collecting, scale modeling, gaming, photography, drawing, creating and even costume roleplaying.

Whilst some hobbies strike many people as trivial or boring, hobbyists have found something compelling and entertaining about them. This fact has brought to light different genres such as Table Top Games, Collectible Card Games, Cosplay, collecting Figurines, Drawing Manga, Doujinshi, Blogging & Japanese Subculture Fashion.

The hobbies above have long existed in Sabah, but it was never acknowledge nor understood by the common public. The lack of exposure, understanding & misconception has thus left many who dwell into this activities to become “closet hobbyist” ...

... until the coming of HobbyCon.

That is what Hobbycon is all about. It is set to be a medium to show the public in Sabah that there are many cool and interesting “unknown” hobbies that have been left unexplored. HobbyCon is THE place to gather people who share the same passion as them - their love for their hobby, and not let the hobbies be forgotten.

2. The room block at the hotel closes on October 12, 2009. Be sure to reserve your rooms early. Also be sure to ask for the "TusCon Science Fiction Convention" room block (and use the whole phrase) so you will get the Con rates, at least have a chance that the reservations person will find the room block correctly and so the Con gets credit for the room nights. 3. Weston Ochse has accepted our offer to be our Guest of Honor this year! Weston is a Stoker Award-winning author and longtime friend of TusCon.

4. We are pleased to announce that Liz Hanson will be our Fan Guest of Honor! Liz has been a supporter TusCon for many years, as well as being involved will all aspects of Fandom throughout Arizona.

5. We are also pleased to announce that Ed Bryant will again be our Toastmaster! Ed has been our Toastmaster for many years and never fails to amuse, enlighten, confound, and amaze.

6. The TusCon Anime Room is back this year! Meghann is excited to show you both her favorites and latest finds.

Every year, we invite a number of industry guests from North America and Japan to come to NDK, including voice actors, directors, art directors, and others. Our guests put on panels, participate as judges in our contests, and hold autograph sessions throughout the weekend. They've even been known to hang out with attendees from time to time. And time after time, we hear how much our guests love NDK and our attendees because they keep asking us if they can come back!

Some Animé Los Angeles features

Con Suite. We are still the only anime convention in California that has a hospitality suite open every day to all members, where you can stop by and get a free soft drink and a snack to tide you over between meals.

Comfy seating. We have beanbag chairs and benches painted by our members for you to sit and converse at. (Conventions are where we have conversations. The reason so many people go to the convention is because so many people are going.)

Costume Repair Station. This room is open every day. Everything you might need to take care of a cosplay emergency, including duct tape, glue gun, black markers, safety pins, and a room full of master costumers with sewing machines. Get it fixed and get back out on the floor!

A registration bag with a program book and a pocket program (schedule grids). And in our program book you'll find plenty of information on the whole convention, including a complete list of the staff and committee as of when the program book was printed. (Well, I think it's very important, anyway. We're all volunteers here, and we want to give credit where credit is due.)

Dances every night. Three nights, actually, because we're going to have a dance on the night before the convention starts. We have a contract with the hotel that allows to us dance all night if we want to -- hotel security won't be shutting us down at 1:00 am, nope, not this time.

Easy to read badges. Well, I think it's important: your badge is your introduction to all your new friends, including people you've chatted with online but haven't met in person. And if this is your first time at Animé Los Angeles, we have a special badge ribbon for you (First Timer or My First Time). Speaking of badge ribbons, if you're coming from outside California, we also have a ribbon for you so you can proudly show the rest of the convention your Saskatchewan pride or wherever you're from.

Photo Gathering Room with lights and backdrop, where you can pose for photos without blocking the hall.

Hall Costume Awards. Hall Costume Accessory Awards. Cosplay Gatherings where you can find other fans with costumes from the same series.

Masquerade on Saturday night, run under ICG Guidelines. And plenty of helpful people to get you started if you've never been on stage before, or want to make your presentation better. And we'll be able to schedule full tech run-throughs on Saturday, because we're not putting anything else in that room.

Dealers. Artists' Alley. Live program panels. Three video program rooms -- anime, J-movies, and AMVs. Video games and live gaming too. We also have a Music and Karaoke room where a dozen different bands will be performing over the weekend. A small number of Guests of Honor -- we don't dilute the honor by inviting a hundred special guests. There will be several dozen or more other people on our live programs, but the Guests of Honor are the handful that we've chosen to spotlight.

Everything under one roof at the LAX Marriott. Restaurants within easy walking distance, and we give you a Restaurant Guide to help you find something you'd like to have for dinner.

Fan tables where you'll find some other conventions that you might be interested in attending. (Conventions are about community. We encourage other convention committees to come and join us, and we give them fan table space because the community is important to us.)

"Rum Party." (No actual rum, just a lot of pirate foolishness.) "Cosplay Chess." (32 fans dressed as different anime characters on a giant chessboard, and two players directing the game.) "Old School" theme on Sunday.

Thank you to all of those who made our 2009 convention such a success. Despite the economic difficulties - a record crowd of 7,042 attended our convention, a 35% increase over our 2008 show. We couldn't have done this show with the support of our attendees, guests, volunteers, and staff.

We're moving!

We are moving to the Phoenix Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency downtown Phoenix for our 2010 convention to be held May 27-30, 2010. We will be tripling in the size of our exhibitor hall and in the amount of programming space we dedicate. With the addition of the Hyatt - we will also have nighttime and evening parties, sketch slams, art auctions, and dances.

Membership Pricing:

We are striving to keep our prices as low as possible for our 2010 convention, especially in light of the current economic crisis. We will have all pricing online and ready beginning of August.

If ConDor were a zoo...well, hey, there are some who say it is! But it's a happy little zoo, where there aren't any bars on the cages, and, in fact, nobody is completely sure who are the exhibits and who are the visitors!

The Grove hotel offers 3 types of Suites:
1) Suites with a view of Qwest Arena [where main events will be held.] These suites have private arena seating for the room guests. You can view main events from your own private seating.
2) Suites that open directly onto the 4th floor terrrace.
3) Standard Suites located on each floor.
