Oct 22, 2008: IxDA-SF Presents: Multi-Everything: Multi-touch and the NUI Paradigm at Particle

Please RSVP here to ensure we have enough food, drinks and chairs for everyone!

Multi-Everything: Multi-touch and the NUI Paradigm
Multi-touch is certainly one of the most talked-about interaction paradigms of the past two years, but even single-touch screens and operating systems are starting to include touch, gestures, and more to push beyond just the mouse and keyboard. This is the path towards the natural user interface, or NUI, which could be a major shift in interface design. But what’s all this good for? Who benefits? And in what contexts does it make sense? Darren David and Nathan Moody, the principals of Stimulant, will talk about how they got into this field, how they design and develop such experiences, and share their learnings from touchwalls, see-through touchscreens, surface computing, mobile experiences, and much more.

Presenters
Nathan Moody is the Design Director of Stimulant. His incredibly broad creative career spans almost every digital medium, most content delivery platforms, and the majority major of software technologies over nearly two decades. Nathan has designed award-winning interfaces, interactions, visuals, motion and sound for such clients as Adobe, Charles Schwab, General Motors, General Electric, Leapfrog, Microsoft, Oracle, The North Face, Timberland and Reebok. He’s been lucky enough to collaborate with Goodby Silverstein & Partners, Fluid, IDEO, John Maeda, l.inc design, Tolleson Design, Obscura Digital, and more. Nathan is a published magazine and book author and editor, a frequent awards judge, and noted speaker on digital creativity.

Darren David is the President and Technical Director of Stimulant. With over 13 years in the industry, Darren is an award-winning pioneer in the field of RIA development. Darren’s list of firsts includes leading development for the first Flash-based online SAT preparation course, developing the first WPF-based application to be publicly deployed on Windows Vista, and engineering the UI for the world’s largest multi-touch wall. His interests and experiences cover a vast range of creative and technical ground, enabling him to bring innovative and informed solutions to clients such as Microsoft, General Motors, Hewlett-Packard, The North Face, Reebok and JanSport. Darren regularly presents at industry conferences, and has served on advisory boards at both Adobe and Microsoft.

Schedule
6:30 pm – Socializing with light refreshments and Hiring Salon (employers/recruiters, bring job descriptions to share)
7:00 pm – Presentation

Brought to you by IxDA SF, Particle, and 24Seven. 24 Seven is a leading full-service talent recruitment agency for the biggest names in marketing, advertising, and creative services currently focusing on placing interaction designers at all levels in the Bay Area

Please join us for a reading and celebration of two extraordinary literary achievements: Lawrence Shainberg (Ambivalent Zen, Memories of Amnesia, Brain Surgeon: An Intimate View of His World) reads from Crust (Two Dollar Radio, October), praised as "one of the most perverse and single-minded satires I've read" by Jonathan Lethem and described by Norman Mailer as "an academic send-up... wild as sin"; Anne Landsman (The Devil's Chimney) reads from The Rowing Lesson (Soho Press, November), which provoked an astonished New York Times Book Review critic to note, "Landsman is a gambler, and here she risks everything" in a feat that, The Guardian (UK) declared, "confirms her reputation as a major new voice."

Oct 29, 2008: EconWomen at Edison Ballroom

EconWomen will focus on the economics of women-centric digital media. The first wave of internet development included a lot of efforts aimed at women-and many failed, consolidated or had to morph because they were too far ahead of critical mass. That critical mass is finally here, with women not only online but spending large amounts of time and money. Media companies old and new are wooing women through gender-specific sites, demo-based ad networks and lifestyle portals. Established companies like iVillage and Oxygen have been gobbled up by big media (NBC Universal (NYSE: GE), in those cases) while new players like Glam, wowOwow, Sugar, Yahoo! (NSDQ: YHOO) Shine, and others have entered the field.

$300 - standard admission.
Speaker Bios:

Angelina Moysov – Singer/songwriter for Persephones Bees

Singer/songwriter Angelina Moysov, born and raised in Southern Russia, began studying music at an early age, graduating with a degree in Conducting/Piano/Choral. Moving to the US in 1994 to pursue her goals, Columbia Records released "Notes From The Underworld" in 2006, the first recording of her band, Persephone's Bees. PBees songs have been featured in the motion picture "Bewitched", television shows "The Sopranos" and "Weeds" and numerous commercials. Her song "Nice Day" is currently 'the sound' of the French Yellow Pages Advertising Campaign. Angelina and her band will be performing in Moscow, Russia, this Halloween. She resides in Oakland, CA., and enjoys taking walks.

Lucia Iman – Musician / Artist

Lucia is a chanteuse/pianist from Sevilla, Spain, the city of duende, or magic. She is now based in Los Angeles where she composes, performs and teaches. She has traveled around the world with her music and has a broad range of credits as a recording artist globally. Music Connection Magazine considers Lucia Iman one of the top 100 unsigned acts of 2007 and calls her “a disarming performer and intriguing live act thanks to her natural talent. Iman shows obvious promise. She is someone to keep an eye on.” Lucia put forth her first European Tour in the spring of 2008, performing at 8 different cities; including London, Paris and Madrid and amassing public acclaim at live and radio shows. She is now creating her upcoming CD through the crowd-funding concept of Sellaband; the artists with the biggest fan following, she has already raised over half of the budget towards her album. She also teaches music through the non-profit organization Soundart and performs locally and nationally.

Pim Betist – Founder and Creative Director of Sellaband.com

Pim Betist is founder and creative director of SellaBand.com. After finishing his masters degree in Finance he climbed the corporate ladders of Royal Dutch Shell until he got bored of hearing the same music over and over on the radio. He decided to trade his comfortable life for the realization of his dream and founded SellaBand.com, an online label that enables unsigned artists to record a professional album that is funded by music fans. Since its launch in August 2006 “the record company of the future” has attracted global media attention. More than $2 million has been invested in unsigned talent on SellaBand.com. Pim was invited to present his brainchild on BBC World, CNN and Fox ews in the US.

Celia Hirschman – KCRW Commentator “On the Beat”

No moss could grow under Ms. Hirschman. She serves as the Managing Director, North America for One Little Indian Records organizing the marketing for artists like Bjork, The Twilight Singers, and Lloyd Cole and others. Simultaneously, she runs the marketing consulting company, Downtown Marketing. And if that weren’t enough, she writes, produces and hosts “On the Beat,” a weekly commentary on the music business for tastemaker NPR affiliate KCRW. Ms. Hirschman’s program is featured weekly as a segment during NPR’s”All Things Considered.”

Cecily Mak – Senior Counsel at RealNetworks, Inc. and Rhapsody America

Cecily Mak is an Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law attorney. She currently holds the position of Senior Counsel, Legal and Business Affairs, at RealNetworks where she supports numerous teams in connection with the digital music service, Rhapsody. Cecily has extensive experience structuring, negotiating and drafting strategic partnership agreements, content license agreements, distribution deals, co-brand agreements and other types of contracts with media companies, record labels, music publishers, search companies, and technology licensors. Cecily is a frequent public speaker and regular contributor to a range of publications on the subjects of digital media, music and copyright law including a recently published by the IAEL and presented at MIDEM entitled “Privatizing Copyright Reform in the Web 2.0 Era.” She teaches Digital Media Law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and is currently co-authoring a book entitled Music Law in the Digital Age scheduled for publication by the Berklee Press in early 2009.

Jay Durgan – President, Raiden Holdings & Former Head of Bus Dev, Warner Music

Jay Durgan founded Raiden Holdings, San Francisco in 2007 with a view to investing in and working with technology companies that provide solutions to fixed and mobile platforms benefiting media, sport, entertainment and informatics. Durgan serves on the Board of Directors to technology incubator/VC Outhink Media and provides consulting services to one of its subsidiaries, MEDIAmobz, Inc. Jay also actively participates in boards to and/or has minority equity interests in TagText, London, England and Voxonic, New York.
The rise and rise of mobile social networking and services is upon us, but is ‘mobile access’ enough or do users seek more?

Oct 28, 2008: Chinwag Live on Tour: Social Media ROI @ Ecommerce Expo at Olympia National Hall

Chinwag Live goes ‘On Tour’ to the Ecommerce Expo at Olympia, where we'll be delving deep into the topic of social media metrics, following on from our popular Measuring Social Media session first held in February 2008.

Our session asks: How are we measuring our return on social media engagement? Is social media ROI (return on investment) a key to campaign success?

With hundreds of tools for tracking, monitoring, analyzing and general probing of online social activity, what should we be measuring for ROI effectiveness? And with the economic downturn making waves, just how effective can these tools be and how are they impacting campaigns?

Join us at E Commerce Expo 2008 to discuss approaches to measuring ROI on social media engagement and explore the issues this are raising for marketers and business.
