Sep 23, 2009: 10th Cambridge Enterprise Conference at Churchill College

10th Cambridge Enterprise Conference
Diving with Dolphins: Navigating International Waters

A recession should not deter technology companies from having international aspirations, in fact they should be building global ambitions into their plan from the outset, says David Gill, Director of the St John's Innovation Centre, ahead of this year's Cambridge Enterprise Conference - Diving with Dolphins: Navigating International Waters - to be held at Churchill College on 23rd September 2009.

The majority of Cambridge success stories have gone global early on and there are a number of models for achieving this. St John's Innovation Centre provides support and advice for early stage companies, including running the dynamic Cambridge Enterprise Conference.

The theme this year is internationalism and the event will be exploring the diverse strategies that have been used by high tech companies to penetrate overseas markets.

Entrepreneurs from Abcam, ARM, Augmentra and Bango along with overseas clients, leading academics and finance specialists will be giving the benefits of their experience at this vibrant event.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to see cutting edge innovations from some of the most exciting young companies on the Cambridge scene.

The 10th Cambridge Enterprise Conference - Diving with Dolphins: Navigating International Waters - is a joint initiative between St John's Innovation Centre, The Greater Cambridge Partnership and N W Brown Group. It is sponsored by Peters Elworthy and Moore (PEM) and St John's Innovation Centre and supported by Business Link East.

Jul 18, 2009: Big Geek Day Out: Bletchley Park at Bletchley Park

The next Big Geek Day Out is being held on Saturday 18th July 2009 from 10:30am at Bletchley Park, the home of high-level British Intelligence during World War II.

Tickets cost £10.00 on the door, or £8.50 online (and let you go back as often as you want for a year).

Bletchley Park is surprisingly easily accessible by rail from London, Bedford and Birmingham, so there should be no excuses for anyone not being able to get there.

What is a Big Geek Day Out?

Big Geek Days Out are "unEvents" - one person organises a time and place for people to meet and that's it. Everything else is done by the people coming to the event.

The idea is that there are plenty of places that we'd like to go to, but for whatever reason never get round to visiting. By someone saying "we're going there on this date" it becomes much more likely that you'll actually get off your bum and visit.

So, that's what happens. The organiser says where and when to meet, and you (as someone who's attending) deal with getting there and buying any tickets needed to get into the place we're visiting. When we went to Alton Towers last year, people organised car shares to get themselves there and sourced buy-one-get-one-free tickets for each other.

Of course, whilst the event isn't classically organised it's still good to know who's going to be coming. If you are going to come along, please add yourself

Sep 20, 2009: Flash on the Beach '09 at The Brighton Dome

If you have only just heard about Flash on the Beach, then you must have been on a desert island! Flash on the Beach conference is the place to go for design, technical and inspiration if you are a web developer. It has grown quickly and gained fantastic status as the 'must go to' conference around. With FOTB06, FOTB07 & FOTB08 being such massive successes, this year we have a hard act to follow, but FOTB09 will be even better!

Nearly 50 of the world's most talented designers, developers, creatives, film makers and artists presenting on 3 tracks over 3 full days. Flash on the Beach brings together the most creative, technical, inspirational, awe-inspiring, educational and entertaining industry leading speakers in the rich media industry.

Not just for Flash..
Don't think of FOTB as just another Flash conference. The Flash bit of the title is more of a mentality or vibe than just a software product. What we mean by that is that Flash is one of the coolest web tools around. It breeds a mentality and vibe that sets it apart.

The Flash community is very supportive of each other. They share, talk, blog, experiment and share some more! They do not limit themselves solely to the product called Flash either. They design, create and deliver some of the best experiences on the web using a wide variety of tools and skills.

Don't think that Flash on the Beach is only about Flash, appearing at FOTB in the past we have had the usual suspects - Flash, Flex, AIR, and then some. Photoshop, After Effects, Processing and many more. If you are a tech-head or a creative, and you need a fix of creative inspiration, or to know the latest how-to's, Flash on the Beach is where you'll get it.

Jul 26, 2009: Barcamp Transparency UK at University Club

Increasingly, the UK has become a surveillance society: one in which we aren't allowed to see the workings of government, nor governmental information relating to our towns and cities, yet are captured on camera more often than citizens of any other country in the world. At the same time, commercial services capture detailed information about our lives and sell it for commercial gain, without letting us decide who gets to see it.

At BarCamp Transparency we'll be talking about ways to improve transparency in government and commerce, including Internet activism, social media and technology solutions. If you're interested in a more open and democractic society, we'd love to have you there. Attendance is free: just bring your ideas.

Barcamp Transparency UK is a Barcamp style event run along the rough lines of transparencycamp.org.

This is a FREE event and the venue has plenty of space. In order for us to get an idea who is coming and so we can contact you with further details we will be releasing tickets on Eventbrite.

Visit http://barcamptransparencyuk.eventbrite.com/ to get yours!

For those who are unable to attend we are also running a virtual event, details can be found here: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/2988465/

Oct 30, 2009: Playful 09 at Conway Hall

Playful is a one-day event all about play – in all its manifestations, throughout the contemporary media landscape. The event aims to promote lively debate on the nature of play and games: what they mean to different people – both inside and outside the industry. Focusing on the creative and cultural dimensions, Playful examines game design as both a discipline and craft, offering different perspectives on its current and future possibilities.

Following on from Sense of Play and the event last year, Playful 09 is moving further afield to bring in experts and exponents from the cultural ‘mainstream’ to explore how to make the games medium more meaningful, to more people. Attracting a wider audience is now very much in the minds of many developers and publishers, and the knowledge that 65% of people who could engage with interactive entertainment choose not to. Despite bold efforts in the past few years by insiders and outsiders, cultural deficiencies are still there – or at least perceived to be there. So what can those of us who design games really learn from other parts of the creative arts? Conversely what does game design have to offer other areas of entertainment and culture?

Playful looks to chart the way forward, and on its way will visit not just the conventional console and PC game, but the myriad of interactive and play-based entertainment experiences which are increasingly becoming part of online, film, television, theatre, installation and performance arts.

The event will look for the interesting and the valuable from a range of areas outside the traditional creative industries including built environment, architects, authors, scientists, as well as the core networked and creative sectors we work with.

Speakers from last year

Roo Reynolds, BBC
James Wallis, Spaaace
Russell Davies, Interesting
Adrian & Dan Hon, Six To Start
Professor Tanya Kryzwinsca, Brunel University
David. G. Surman, University of Wales
Chris Delay, Introversion
Matthew Irvine Brown, Last.fm

Jul 4, 2009: Open Tech 2009 at Central London

Open Tech 2009 is an informal, low cost, one-day conference on slightly different approaches to technology, democracy and community.

Back for 2009, OpenTech promises a day of thoughtful talks and conversations with friends. One of the strands we'd like to see running through the day is "working on stuff that matters", whatever you work on.

This event's predecessors, in 2008 and 2005 were low cost, one-day conferences about technologies that anyone can have a go at, from "Open Source"-style ways of working to repurposing everyday electronics hardware. Before that was NotCon 2004, an informal, low-cost, one-day conference on things that technologies were perhaps not intended to do.

Jul 7, 2009: 2gether09 at TBC

2gether is the UK’s largest digital festival, exploring and celebrating how technology can be used to promote social progress.

It started in the summer 2008 at a lovely Victorian school in Shoreditch, East London

Hundreds of people joined us at 2gether08 over the course of two days of some sunshine and light rain. They arrived from very different worlds; from technology, media, the arts, NGOs, social media experts, campaigners, politicians and entrepreneurs.

Under the framework of a co-created event that combined participant-led content with presentations from the world’s best minds, everyone was there to share: knowledge, ideas, skills and networks. More than that, they came to collaborate and to develop practical solutions to some of our most pressing social issues.
