Sep 18, 2008: Global Exchange Turns 20! at Bimbo's 365

Celebrate Global Exchange's 20 Years of Resisting Injustice, Envisioning Alternatives & Taking Action!

Come party with a leading international human rights organization making significant contributions toward achieving a just, peaceful and sustainable world!

20 years ago our founders--a nutritionist, a welder and an academic--sat together on a red striped futon in Noe Valley and envisioned the future of Global Exchange. "We wanted to create and organization that would act as a catalyst to inspire people to get involved in the international movement," says co-founder Kirsten Moller.

Global Exchange has made great strides in transforming the global economy from profit-centered to people-centered--from currency to community. We are proud to have helped shut down the World Trade Organization in Seattle, won a $20 million sweatshop settlement against 26 major clothing retailers and organized the first-ever international observation of US elections.

Come celebrate! Enjoy dinner; dancing; a silent auction with art, green & fair trade goods and opportunities for adventure. Support the organization working arduously for the change you want to see in the world, and have a fantastic time doing it! We can't wait to celebrate our 20 years in the movement and all the common goals that bind us together.

Can't make the Event, but still want to help us Celebrate?

1. Become a co-sponsor! Sponsorships range from $1000-$30,000. For details and privileges contact: Kristin@glaobalexchange.org
2. Place and Ad in our Souvenir Journal: given to attendees and displayed in our Fair Trade Stores: San Francisco and Berkeley
3. Make an In-Kind Donation to our Silent Auction and be listed on our website and in our Souvenir Journal

$150 before August 1st, $175 after.

Aug 9, 2008: Daily Acts North Bay Tour: Cohousing Communities Coalesce at 40 Oaks Cohousing

We're delighted to once again join East Bay Cohousing partner Daily Acts for this lovely, affordable, North Bay-only tour of intentional neighborhoods, carpooling for efficiency, visiting some unique communities in a fashion not included on any bus tour. ADVANCE REGISTRATION VIA DAILY ACTS IS REQUIRED - registering here on upcoming or our MeetUp is not enough.

Rendezvous at 40 Oaks Cohousing Community for a delightful day of creative lifestyles and visions made real. Resident Claudia Cleaver, architect/designer of green and natural buildings, will tour us through the layers of sustainable design. These houses are cutting edge, using straw bales, Rastra, natural plasters, concrete floors, recycled and reclaimed materials and more!

Satiated with beauty, style and functionality, we'll head to FrogSong Cohousing of Cotati where residents will host us through a few homes and the lovely Permaculture food gardens. This downtown community creatively combines lovely home sites and storefront rental properties for communal income. Get exposed to consensus decision-making process, ask questions, discuss the practical steps to beginning a cohousing community and learn from those already doing it. We'll linger at FrogSong for a tasty potluck lunch.

Last, but certainly not least, we'll caravan to Yulupa Cohousing in Santa Rosa. This unique endeavor represents Sonoma County's most recently finished cohousing project. Yulupa Cohousing models a density of 29 homes on 1.65 acres, a viable alternative to endless "urban sprawl." Due to the passing of the amazing co-housing architect and visionary, Michael Black, on April 9th, 2008,Yulupa community members will lead the tour. Michael was the architect of Yulupa and Two Acre Wood Cohousing in Sebastopol and is known for his consensus-building and conflict resolution models and unusual designs.

It's a day packed with images of life embedded in community and creative solutions.

To save your seat, click the link below or call to register directly with tour host Daily Acts.

Sep 10, 2008: Climate Change in Yosemite: Patterns of Environmental Change at Yosemite National Park

Scientists have studied changes in climate and environmental patterns for decades. More recently, the issue has been elevated to a higher public profile. Multiple research projects are tracing patterns of environmental change to climate change and using predictive models to give a glimpse of future rates of change and resultant effects on the vegetation and animals.

Yosemite National Park is an area of interest, having elevations of over 9,000 feet, and is also extensively studied with historical records. Within the park, biologists have completed a detailed update of vegetation maps and have recently finished a 100-year resurvey of vertebrates, mapping both the historical and current ranges. When these maps are compared to maps of climate change, it suggests that ranges and climate changes may be linked. In these complex systems, there are several factors affecting distribution and changes in both flora and fauna but climate change is one factor that can be extensively measured.

Join our team of high Sierra experts as we explore how the patterns of environmental and biotic changes may be tied to a changing climate and understand how their research affects management decisions. We will examine the Tuolumne Meadows, Tioga Crest, and the Sierra's eastern slopes to better understand the detected changes. Lectures, examination of regional photo retakes, and field site visits will illustrate how scientists are documenting the role of climate in this environment.

Workshop Instructors:
***Connie Millar ~ Sierra Nevada Research Center, PSW Research Station, USDA Forest Service
***Jessica Lundquist ~ Assistant Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Washington
***Guest lecture by David Graber ~ Chief Scientist, Pacific West Region, National Park Service

Course fee includes accommodations, meals, park fees, and transportation for the duration of the workshop. Camping will be on private property with running water and flush toilets.

Topic Description:

Energy storage is relevant to all of the following areas: chemical, electrochemical, electrical, mechanical and thermal energy. Two of the most popular areas for discussion are water storage and electrical storage. There are several current storage methodologies in use in each of these areas. This panel will touch on some of the currently used methods as well as new technologies currently being researched or tried around the country.

Energy storage has many critical roles to play in securing our energy future. Among the issues we will address in this session are:

* What are the pros and cons of a national (or state) electrical storage system much like the national Petroleum Reserve?
* What programs are developing for the storage of solar and wind power?
* Would an electric power storage system help to stabilize electricity markets?
* Would an emphasis on energy storage make renewable energy more economically viable and more widely used?

Oct 17, 2008: Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature at Marin Civic Center

The Collective Heritage Institute, aka Bioneers, was founded in 1990, when Kenny Ausubel and Nina Simons assembled Bioneers for the first annual Bioneers conference, a gathering of scientific and social innovators who have demonstrated visionary and practical models for restoring the Earth and communities.

Bioneers was conceived to conduct programs in the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, traditional farming practices, and environmental restoration. Our vision of environment encompasses the natural landscape, cultivated landscape, biodiversity, cultural diversity, watersheds, community economics, and spirituality. Bioneers seeks to unite nature, culture and spirit in an Earth-honoring vision, and create economic models founded in social justice.

Restoration addresses the premise that "sustainability" is problematic in the context of an environment that is already depleted. As Paul Hawken has noted, sustainability is simply the midpoint between destruction and restoration. The goal of Bioneers is restoration, addressing the interdependent array of economics, jobs, ecologies, cultures, and communities.

Bioneers are biological pioneers who are working with nature to heal nature and ourselves. They have peered deep into the heart of living systems to devise strategies for restoration based on nature's own operating instructions. They come from many cultures and perspectives, and all walks of life.

Bioneers are scientists and artists, gardeners and economists, activists and public servants, architects and ecologists, farmers and journalists, priests and shamans, policymakers and citizens. They are everyday people committed to preserving and supporting the future of life on Earth. They herald a dawning Age of Restoration founded in natural principles of kinship, interdependence, cooperation, reciprocity, and community.

Uniting nature, culture, and spirit, Bioneers embody a change of heart - a spiritual connection with the living world that is grounded in social justice. Their pragmatic strategies effectively address many of our most pressing ecological and societal challenges.

Above all, Bioneers represent a culture of solutions. Their stories demonstrate that just as people have created the environmental and social problem we face, people can solve them - through a reciprocal partnership with nature. Over and over, they show how great a difference the actions of one individual can make.

Nov 14, 2008: Green Festival at San Francisco Concourse Exhibition Center

Green Festivals are a celebration of what’s working in our communities– for people, for businesses and for the environment.

A joint project of two national nonprofit organizations, Global Exchange and Co-op America, Green Festivals bring together local and national socially responsible businesses, and environmental, social justice and community organizations. Hundreds of thousands of concerned individuals over the years have attended these “parties with a purpose” aimed at forging a just, sustainable, inclusive economy – a green economy.

Green Festivals are a walk through a sustainable community. It starts with the personal: how people can make their lives work better. Individuals and business and community leaders also come together to discuss social and environmental issues of personal, local, national and global concern. Organizations and businesses showcase programs and products that serve the community. Neighbor-to-neighbor connections are formed, and skills are shared to empower people to create a livable community. Of course, it wouldn’t be a festival without music, art, culture and delicious food – all from local-based organizations and businesses.

For more information about the two sponsoring organizations, see www.globalexchange.org and www.coopamerica.org

Oct 19, 2008: North Berkeley Spice of Life Festival at North Shattuck Ave

In it's 6th year, the Festival will savor the "Spice of Life" with an exciting new Culinary Stage at the Elephant Pharmacy parking lot hosted by Kitchen on Fire’s Chef MikeC showcasing the East Bay's finest chefs. At the stage a range of cooking demos and cookbook signings by popular neighborhood chefs and restaurants will be featured, along with sales and sampling of gourmet food products. Throughout the Festival, gourmet food offerings from a range of North Berkeley restaurants and selected vendors will be available near bistro style outdoor seating areas and wine and beer gardens. This year we welcome Calistoga Water as a new major sponsor, and the event will be “green” with the use of compostable food plates, cups and utensils with the assistance of the City of Berkeley's Recycling Program.

Local musicians will provide live entertainment on two stages and in more intimate settings such as the Vine Street wine tasting area. North Shattuck area businesses will host author appearances and book signings, interactive art projects, and yoga and bodywork demonstrations. The event also includes 125 exhibitors displaying high quality arts & crafts along with fair trade imports, local non-profits and schools, and a variety of children’s activities. The North Berkeley All-Organic Farmers Market will be held as part of the event in its usual Thursday location on Shattuck near Rose St. with additional vendors.

A Raffle and Silent Auction of goods and services from local businesses will benefit the Edible Schoolyard Project, the Children's Community Center Preschool, and the Berkeley High Jazz Band, who will also perform at the event.

Aug 29, 2008: Slow Food Nation at Fort Mason Center

[also a big garden at Civic Center, various locations]

How is a heritage turkey different from its factory farm counterpart? What is a Blenheim apricot and why should we preserve it for posterity? How can we all enjoy local, affordable, and sustainably produced food? The answers will be apparent at the first Slow Food Nation, a celebration of American food organized by Slow Food USA in San Francisco.

San Francisco is poised to be at the center of a movement with global implications. Experts such as Alice Waters and Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, are anchoring the task force planning the four-day celebration, which will embody the values of the Slow Food movement and illustrate how food and agriculture form a complex global tapestry of cultural, political, and environmental issues. In addition to education through taste, the event will offer a wide range of activities for all ages, including talks, forums, workshops, and films that will teach people the importance of preserving traditional foods and production techniques—and alert them to the broader implications of their eating choices.

A marketplace of around five dozen farmers and artisans from across the country will showcase the range of traditional American foods. Attracted by the simple pleasures of the table, participants will leave having learned how American food production affects global issues, including greenhouse gas emissions, childhood obesity, famine in the developing world, and the disappearance of the small farmer. Attendees will emerge with a broad-based vision of the life-enriching benefits of a sustainable approach to food and life, as well as the tools and personal connections to implement that vision.
