Nov 13, 2008: Onemedia Unconference at Nesta

‘Shaping a business blueprint for the digital media industries’

Date: 13th and 14th November 2008
Venue: Nesta, 1 Plough Place, London EC4A 1DE

Partners: Skillset, Nesta, Pact, Media-Sauce, Unexpected Media and 01zero-one.

Onemedia is a pioneering unconference where you set the agenda to find the cross industry business opportunities that matter to you, to increase your revenue and develop your business model.
•	What does a successful multi-platform business model look like?
•	What are the pitfalls that other industries have already discovered?
•	How can you increase your revenue?
•	How does business work in other industries?

If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, then the Onemedia Unconference is for you.

What do you get from attending?

•	A ‘sea’ of contacts from all the media industries.
•	Building cross industry partnerships and collaborations.
•	Learn about new business models that you can apply to your business.
•	Answers to the creative business questions that matter to you.

All attendees will receive a report including the content from the two days. This will contain some of the most cutting edge and pan-industry thinking around.

Onemedia is interactive. You set the agenda, and create the conversations and search for the solutions that matter to you, your company and your industry in order to grow.

For the ‘bigger picture’ people, Onemedia can inform strategy and policy and create positive change.

Onemedia is for:

Established companies and organisations that are looking to widen their markets by exploiting the new opportunities and finding ways of building collaborations with other companies and other industries. Participants will be from TV, Film, Games, Animation, Mobile, Software and Music industries

Sometimes you need a different approach to get a different result

Onemedia is different. This is not a single industry conference but a multi industry forum that will include some of the most established and innovative companies.

We only have a very limited number of places for each creative industry sector so to secure your attendance please go to www.one-media.org and click the 'sign me up' button.

Oct 20, 2008: Startups/VCs SIG: Wall Street Meltdown - Impacts on VC Funding? at Siemens Technology-To-Business

If you're an entrepreneur seeking venture capital, how do today's financial headlines impact your business? Looking ahead, does the investment banking industry collapse, mortgage industry bailout, and a softened dollar have a direct connection to investment dollars? If so, what can entrepreneurs expect in the coming year?

Before the recent demise of Lehman, Merrill, and other investment banks, the venture capital industry was already having a challenging year. For the first time in 30 years, no VC-funded company went public in the second quarter. The IPO drought ties up capital and extends investment timeframes, lowering returns. Now with the Wall Street meltdown, there are fewer firms to support M&A deals and IPOs. How are VC firms planning to navigate the coming years, and what does this mean to an entrepreneur seeking capital? What sectors are gaining momentum, and which are falling out of favor?

Join us Monday, October 20, 2008 for the EBIG Startups/Venture Capital Special Interest Group Meeting in Berkeley. Learn from a panel of VC investors who will discuss:

* What is the impact of the economy on venture capital and entrepreneurs?
* What sectors are gaining investor momentum?
* Where is the smart money going in the rest of 2008?
* How can entrepreneurs make the most of these trends?
* How to avoid common pitfalls when approaching investors

Confirmed panelists include:

* John Stuart, Claremont Creek Ventures
* Lars Leckie, Hummer Winblad
* Allessandro Zago, Siemens Technology-to-Business Center
* Jean-Louis Gassee, Allegis Capital

Free for eBig Members, Guests $15-20.

Oct 21, 2008: Bootstrappers Breakfast at Coco's on Oakmead, Sunnyvale

Join Other Entrepreneurs Who Eat Problems For Breakfast.

Bootstrappers Breakfasts are for founders of early stage software startups. It is a chance to compare notes on operational, development, and business issues with peers. These breakfasts were designed for entrepreneurs to share ideas and leverage thoughts with other folks who are serious about growing their business.

At Bootstrappers Breakfast we have serious conversations about growing a business based on internal cashflow. This is not for entrepreneurs who want to meet VCs, this is for founders who are actively bootstrapping a startup. We meet in the back room at several Silicon Valley restaurants so space is limited.

These breakfasts are facilitated by SKMurphy, Inc. as a service to the Silicon Valley bootstrapper community, so there is no sales pitch from us or anyone else who attends. The first breakfast was held at Coco's in the heart of Silicon Valley in 2005. Since that time, they have grown to multiple locations through out the Bay Area.

Cost of breakfast + tip.

Oct 30, 2008: VC TaskForce - Bridging the CEO / VC Communications Gap at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP

Your company presentation is the single most important fundraising document. Delivered at a VC partner meeting or shared over email, your company overview defines who you are, what you do and the extent to which your firm sounds like an attractive investment opportunity for angels, VCs or strategic investor.

When you pitch to VCs, do you know what VCs hear when you speak? Do you present what VCs actually want to know -- or merely communicate your passion for your product? The VC Taskforce is pleased to offer a Company Presentation workshop for executives responsible for crafting and delivering the company's investor pitch. Our goal: bridging the communications gap between what CEOs want to say and what VCs want to hear.

Learn what the key 'must have' elements are in a 'perfect pitch'. Learn what the most serious red flags are that lead to early disqualification. What makes a great story? How do VCs distinguish a great technology from a great company? A great company from a great investment?

Dr. Ronald Weissman, our session leader, has been an active Silicon Valley VC (Apax Partners) and angel investor (Band of Angels) and has trained many executives in understanding how VCs think and evaluate deals. As a VC, he has critiqued hundreds of pitches and as a former executive, delivered many pitches in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street.

Presenter & Coach: Dr. Ronald Weissman, Apax Partners and Band of Angels

Please note: Space is limited, register early!

Presenting to VCs Chair: Dr. Ronald Weissman, Apax Partners and Band of Angels

If you have any questions, please contact Ronald Weissman.

$55 VCTF members. $65 Affiliates, $85 General, $10 add'l at door.

Oct 22, 2008: SDForum and Nixon Peabody Present Learning Lessons for Entrepreneurs at Frank, Rimerman + Co., LLP

SDForum, in collaboration with Nixon Peabody and Frank Rimerman are delighted to announce the launch of a unique and innovative breakfast series: Building a Tech Business in Silicon Valley: A Case Study. The Series is NOT a "talking heads" panel program. Instead, the important lessons learned are communicated through discussions centering around detailed case descriptions. Audience members put themselves in the shoes of the company's principals as they suffer and succeed through the rollercoaster life of a startup. The Series will take place across five sessions from Fall '08 to Spring '09 and will trace the lifecycle of a fictitious Silicon Valley technology company.

Each session will be kicked off by a panel of experts and then participants will discuss and debate what the founders should do, provide helpful insights and materials for the entrepreneurial attendees as they build and grow their own companies. The experts include seasoned entrepreneurs and CEO's, service providers, investors and executives with pertinent experience and insights. There will be a dedicated wiki to communicate with attendees, including disseminating background material prior to the sessions, session materials, news and other related pieces or posts, and speaker and sponsor information.

Attendees are invited to participate in the entire series, or simply come for one session of particular interest.

Session #1: Cash Crunch
GS has successfully landed its first major partnership GS television production company for their new show - America Has A Big Secret. They have been doing consulting on the side, but the company has not yet begun to generate revenue from its core business. Unfortunately, the company is almost completely out of cash. This is their first big break, yet they cannot even pay their employees, taxes, rent, or even buy their own coffee. What can and should the founders do?

SDForum members: $35, Non-members: $45, Platinum Pass: $0.

Oct 15, 2008: eBig Java SIG: Apache Hadoop Discussion at Reed Smith

Hadoop is an Open Source Apache project that provides a framework for running applications on large clusters of commodity hardware. The Hadoop framework transparently provides applications both reliability and data motion, making it easy to write applications that process hundreds of terabytes of data efficiently. Hadoop provides both a distributed file system, similar to GFS, and Map/Reduce for managing distributed applications. O'Malley will cover the motivation and approach for Hadoop, an overview of the components and architecture, and an overview of how Hadoop is used by Yahoo! on 17,000 computers to store and process petabytes of data.

SPEAKER:

Owen O'Malley is a Software Architect in Yahoo's Grid Computing team and is the chair of the Program Management Committee for Apache Hadoop. He has been a Hadoop committer since March of 2006 and more than 200 of his patches have been committed to Hadoop. Before working on Hadoop, he worked on Yahoo Search's Webmap that builds and analyzes the graph of the World Wide Web. Prior to Yahoo, he worked at NASA Ames Research Center on software model checking and at Sun working on a distributed version control system. He received his PhD in Software Engineering from University of California, Irvine.

Idea Communities: How to Turn Your Customers and Employees Into Innovation Partners

Companies are facing enormous pressure from the market and company stakeholders to innovate, and to do it fast. The phenomenon of Web 2.0 and social networking is providing a new way in which companies look at innovation. Companies don't have to rely only on their employees to generate and foster company innovations. In fact, in many cases the market is demanding that we listen and respond to external ideas. Accept software has been working with industry experts and top companies to promote and discuss this new wave of innovation techniques and best practices.

In this session, we will provide examples of companies that are demonstrating the business value of community engagement for innovation. We will identify the opportunities and challenges with this approach, and how to overcome them. Then, we'll review an action plan for deploying an innovation network and how to prioritize, manage, and transform those ideas into product and service innovations.
Attendees will leave with an understanding of:
- Why community engagement for innovation is essential for their business
- The challenges of social innovation and how to overcome them
- Best practices for deployment of a community-based idea capture system

Oct 14, 2008: Digital Media Quarterly Series: Mobile Media at Fish & Richardson P.C.

Following up on last year's highly successful conference, join SDForum for this new quarterly dinner series as we track what's happened since then and delve deeper into the hot topics related to the business and technology behind digital media today. What are the business models that will sustain digital media companies going forward? Where are the pitfalls? And what technologies are driving new media? Who controls the content? These topics and many more will be addressed in this quarterly evening series.

There were over 3 billion mobile phones last year across the world, the most ubiquitous device for communicating and consuming media that exists- more than laptops, ipods, game boys. Mobile phones represent our every day "entertainment-delivery-devices" and will continue to grow as the technologies supporting them improve.

This panel will focus on what this trend means for media, how media companies are going mobile and what the next generation of devices and content will look and feel like. What are the devices of the future? What content will people expect to have and what will they use? What new technologies and services are coming our way? Who cares and who's investing now for the future?

PBees songs have been featured in the motion picture "Bewitched", television shows "The Sopranos" and "Weeds" and numerous commercials. Her song "Nice Day" is currently 'the sound' of the French Yellow Pages Advertising Campaign. Angelina and her band will be performing in Moscow, Russia, this Halloween. Iman shows obvious promise. She is someone to keep an eye on.” Lucia put forth her first European Tour in the spring of 2008, performing at 8 different cities; including London, Paris and Madrid and amassing public acclaim at live and radio shows. Since its launch in August 2006 “the record company of the future” has attracted global media attention. More than $2 million has been invested in unsigned talent on SellaBand.com.
