Jan 14, 2010: An Overview of Website Accessibility at Online Pacific Time

Implementation of web accessibility can seem excessively complicated. In reality, the best accessibility practices dovetail with good overall usability, and are easy to implement via standard tools such as templates and cascading style sheets (CSS). This session will cover topics such as understanding the difference between various accessibility guidelines, avoiding common accessibility errors, when — and when not — to rely on automatic accessibility checkers, and unexpected populations that benefit from accessible websites.

This webinar is best suited for individuals with some knowledge of HTML coding who are involved with ensuring that their organization's website is accessible.

Jan 4, 2010: Want to take your social venture to the next level? Apply to the 2010 Global Social Benefit Incubator at Santa Clara University

It is our pleasure to invite your application for the 2010 Global Social Benefit Incubator (GSBI™) -- organized by Santa Clara University’s Center for Science, Technology, and Society, and the Leavey School of Business and Administration.

GSBI, a program developed by Santa Clara University’s Center for Science, Technology, and Society, assists social benefit entrepreneurs in developing business plans that enable their organizations to reach increasing numbers of beneficiaries. The GSBI consists of three major components:
1.	An on-line, mentored, application process hosted on Social Edge and based on three business planning exercises designed to benefit all who participate. In the applicants define their organizations value proposition, target market (beneficiaries), and “social business” model (key income and expense drivers).
2.	20 organization selected from the application process receive scholarships for an online (4 month) and in-residence (2 week) program that involves “action learning” and mentoring to prepare a sustainable plan for their organization.
3.	On-going mentoring and collaboration for all who complete the in-residence component.
All who participate in the Business Planning Exercises will benefit from the mentoring and feedback on their application exercises, and 20 organizations will be selected for a full scholarship, valued at US $25,000, to participate in 4-months of online preparation and then to attend the intensive two week in-residence program (to be held August 15-28, 2010).
Selection for the GSBI™ scholarships is based on 4 criteria: 1) value proposition with demonstrated impact on important social issues for the Base of the Pyramid (BOP), 2) potential to impact a large target BOP market, 3) a business model with potential to scale rapidly while being financially self-sustaining (including contributed income); and 4) the application exercises have been completed by the top executive in the organization and that executive commits to completing the pre-work and attending the GSBI™.

Because of the importance of energy for the development at the Base of the Economic Pyramid, GSBI™-2010 will reserve up to 8 selections for organizations with demonstrated solutions for solving the problem of lack of access to clean, reliable, low-cost energy sources, including: off-grid power and light; locally-produced and distributed second-generation bio-fuels; affordable energy-saving devices, such as efficient cook-stoves and more efficient, less-polluting transport vehicles.

Applicants should begin preparing their exercises and post them on Social Edge beginning January 4, 2010 at http://www.socialedge.org/features/gsbi (SocialEdge website will be updated for 2010 shortly). Each submittal is reviewed by a member of the GSBI™ GSBI™ Application Mentoring Team (AMT). Social Edge members also are invited to review and comment on the exercises of any organization. Participants in the 2010 GSBI™ in-residence program will be selected from those organizations that complete all three exercises.
We look forward to your participation.
Sincerely,

GSBI Team

Jan 13, 2010: FOMS 2010 at Radio New Zealand House

Open media is a movement to promote free expression and innovation in online video and audio.

FOMS is a task-oriented developer meeting. At FOMS, developers of open media software gather to collaborate on code and plan future technology to enable a future of open media.

The focus of the first day is getting to know each other and everyone's expertise through shot-gun presentations by each participant. On the second day break-out groups attack issues identified during the first day. On the third day we get our hands dirty with hacking and setting ourselves community goals for the year to come.

Jan 30, 2010: A Helluva Camp for Nonprofit Rebels at Ninth Street Media Center

As the economy faces a 'jobless recovery,' social entrepreneurs are emerging in all sectors and industries. While gumption counts for a lot, entrepreneurs still require hard skills and information to successfully launch an enterprise. Fundraising expert and author Holly Million helps big thinkers translate their vision into practical plans with A Helluva Camp for Nonprofit Rebels. Registration includes breakfast, lunch and Peet's coffee and teas.

This content-packed camp features new faces and new ideas for the rebels who want to shake up the nonprofit world. Come discover new ideas and innovative ways of doing "business" in your field. This is a fantastic opportunity to network with other nonprofit rebels and experts in many fields. Camp enrollment limited to 80 maximum.

With topics such as "Caviar PR on a Baked-Bean Budget" and "How to Ask People For Money," A Helluva Camp provides thorough and compelling content with a fired-up attitude. Register before Dec. 31, 2009 at the early-bird discount rate of just $125.

Tom Lin, a veteran of the online advertising world for such corporations as Microsoft, Google and Yahoo, participated in Million's recent workshop on Web 2.0 tools for film fundraising. "I'm very familiar with Web 2.0 and, as a filmmaker, I've attended classes that speak to these tools, but none of them successfully brought it all together until I participated in Holly's workshop," notes Lin. "Hers was the best I've ever attended. Thanks, Holly!"
We’ll hear from leaders at Rotary International—which has 37,000 friends on its Facebook page dedicated to ending polio worldwide—and Center for an Independent Future, which dedicates itself to helping individuals with disabilities to have access to all opportunities of a full life. They will each discuss how they are using social media to tell their stories and the impact new technology is having on their organization.

9 a.m. to noon Five Fridays beginning January 22, 2010
Hardly anyone ever went to school to learn how to lead communications for a nonprofit—this workshop is as close you can come. Participants in PMR, which has been delivered for 20 years now, have gone on to make careers as communication directors at large nonprofits and foundations. Find out why this cornerstone workshop has been called a nonprofit communications university. Updated to keep up with changes in news the sessions will cover:

Storytelling and strategy: in the news and online
Writing and pitching
Spokesperson skills for you or your boss
In this workshop, you will identify a story idea from your work or organization, refine it, and at the final session pitch it. Working journalists will be present to give instant feedback on what worked and what you might want to work on. They differ every year but they have included reporters from Associated Press, Chicago Public Radio, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, and many more—participants in this workshop have often ended up getting some coverage. Also included in the price of the workshop is 1 copy of Getting On Air, Online & Into Print media guide and a media handbook, SPIN Works.
Cost is $395, (same price since 2005)
