Jul 10, 2009: Fundraising with Twitter at The Hub Kings Cross

You're probably hearing quite a bit about Twitter now and how some charities are starting to use it.

But can you use it for fundraising? If so, how can your charity benefit from it? Find how from UK Fundraising's Howard Lake as he guides you through getting started with Twitter as a fundraising tool.

* how does Twitter fit into your fundraising plans?
* making the most of your Twitter account and presence
* building up your network of supporters by listening and following
* different types of fundraising using Twitter
* how to measure your impact

It is still early days for Twitter as a fundraising tool and we don't pretend to grasp it all.

But if you're looking for practical ideas and a helping hand, Howard Lake has over 14 years' experience of reporting on, thinking about, and training charities in using the Internet to fundraise.

Join us at the The Hub, King's Cross, for live demonstrations of Twitter in action. Bring your own laptop if you want and get online using the venue's wi-fi system. Laptops not required of course - just curiosity about whether Twitter can work for your organisation.

NB. Ticket prices are £90 + VAT, and £175+ VAT. The VAT will be included when you pay on Paypal.

You can opt to pay by invoice.

"Having decided that the NCPTA needed to utilise digital media to the full, we went onto open a Twitter account. The question was, what do we do next? The Fundraising with Twitter course, was a fast and furious two hours, packed with practical hints and tips, to guide you through the maze of things to consider. I came away more enlightened, with a clear idea of how to take our communication with our supporters to another level".

Jul 16, 2009: Using Virtual Reality for Stakeholder Engmt for Env Mgmt at Online, in Second Life

Thursday, July 16, 2009, 11am-5pm Eastern

Presented by PublicDecisions, Co-sponsored by Learning Times, NY University Law School/Institute for Information Law and Policy, Public Agenda, Involve and National Issues Forum Institute

Don't Just Tell Them, Show Them
Why just talk with stakeholders about environmental management (or any other subject)? Let them experience it!

Conducted entirely in the virtual world Second Life, this one-day conference will provide you with the opportunity to experience and learn about the possibilities of hosting stakeholder learning events using virtual reality.

You'll participate in presentations (including a virtual deliberation held in Second Life), discussions . . . even "field trips" that demonstrate how virtual reality is being used for stakeholder learning today.

Field trips include
1) Tufts University (3D planning for Acton, Massachusetts that actually can be manipulated "in world" by participants in Second Life);
2) Centre for Water Studies (uses Second Life to showcase six water habitats that participants can interact with in world);
3) EcoCommons (provides an in-world network for environmentally-focused nonprofits, such as the Sierra Club and the Mountain Lion Foundation, for promoting awareness, community-building and environmental education) and
4) Virtual Native Lands (an island that uses Second Life for engaging people around the world in discussions about environmental issues affecting tribal nations around the world)

What You'll Learn:
► The benefits and drawbacks of working with stakeholders in Second Life, including when it's appropriate, efficient and effective—and when it's not
► How Second Life differs from other technologies used for stakeholder engagement
► How Second Life can be used for a range of subject areas, including—but not limited to—environmental management
► Tips for using Second Life effectively, including how to access existing "islands" or spaces within Second Life's virtual world and how to create your own space

View the conference agenda at http://www.publicdecisions.com/mini_conferences_3.html

No Experience Needed
An orientation for registrants new to Second Life (and those who want a refresher) will be provided prior to the conference.

Jul 26, 2009: How To Write To Change The World: An Op-Ed Project Seminar at Spertus Museum

Community Media Workshop

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

How To Write To Change The World: An Op-Ed Project Seminar

Did you know the op-ed pages of our nation’s newspapers are overwhelmingly dominated—80% or more—by men? You can change this!

Sunday, July 26

10AM to 5PM

Spertus Museum

610 S. Michigan Ave. - Room 313

Includes breakfast and lunch

REGISTER TODAY!

Learn to us the Op-Eds to sway public opinion and change the world.

“We got an op-ed in Women's E-News! Many thanks to CMW for
offering the op-ed workshop; I know it helped me immensely!” - Laura Fletcher
Communications and Advocacy Manager Chicago Foundation for Women
http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm/dyn/aid/3948

Op Ed pages of major newspapers are read by policy makers, business people, scholars and those in the highest level of government. Because the op-ed pages feed all other media, the under-representation of women here perpetuates and exaggerates the under-representation of women in larger ways.

In this seminar you will learn to:

* Identify the ideas and causes you care about and
* Show you how to write about them to make a difference
* Get trained on how to generate winning ideas and craft powerful arguments
* Gain an understanding on how to frame an issue to make your point and persuade your readers

Space is limited so register today!

Trainer Catherine Orenstein’s Op-Ed Project has been featured in The New York Times, Feministing.com and on CBS News with Katie Couric. It is an initiative to expand public debate, with an immediate focus on targeting and training women experts across the nation to project their voices on the op-ed pages of major newspapers, online sites and other key forums of public discourse, currently dominated by male voices. Catherine is the founder of the Op-Ed Project and she has written on culture, mythology, and power for The New York Times (where she is an occasional contributor to the op-ed page), The Washington Post, The San Francisco Examiner Sunday Magazine, and Ms. Magazine, among other places. Her opinion pieces have run on the Knight-Ridder newswire and appear in anthologies.

Jul 13, 2009: Develop & Sharpen Your Message Webinar at Community Media Workshop

WEBINAR : Develop and Sharpen Your Message Webinar

A compelling message moves your audiences to action... but even before the Internet, "message" was much more than words. Learn the elements that will help your organization craft powerful messages concisely and convincingly--from concept to wordsmithing to getting buy-in from colleagues and supervisors to roll-out.

Delivered by Valerie Denney, principal, Valerie Denney Communications
It’s good to be idealistic, but ideals change nothing unless effectively communicated and pursued. So while Valerie Denney may have strong feelings about social justice and environmental sustainability, progressive clients seek her help because she has the seasoned judgment, strategic sense, energy and attention to detail required if good intentions are to produce measurable results. For over two decades Valerie has delivered professional public relations services to organizations, agencies and individuals working for positive social change. She does this not by grinding out press releases or badgering the “usual suspects” in the media (though she is a master of the terse, timely release and is well-respected by reporters and editors in Chicago and beyond). Instead, Valerie works with clients to articulate core messages, identify key audiences, translate complex issues into simple but evocative language … and then reach out for maximum impact.

2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m Monday, July 13 and Tuesday, Sept. 22

Registration is required http://www.gifttool.com/registrar/ShowEventDetails?ID=1253&EID=4768

Aug 13, 2009: HAR2009 at Paasheuvel

Since 1989 the international community that builds the internet has been getting together on a series of conferences to discuss the state of contemporary technology, the future of it and the sociological and political consequences of their work. The participants vary from students and people with personal interests to researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs who are widely recognized as the best in their field.

The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the average level of knowledge is high and outside of the official lectures the site is buzzing with energy, ideas and projects. The New York Times likened the 1997 edition to a “Woodstock for Hackers”. We do our best to keep that atmosphere.

When these conferences first happened twenty years ago, the internet was like the Wild West, a new frontier to explore. That has changed, virtually every household in the Western world has access to the internet and, just as happened in the Wild West, new questions have risen. Questions of governance, sustainability, integration with existing power structures, shortage of IP space and energy, censorship, security, etc. The notion of hacking, to use a system in a creative way that was not thought of when it was invented, has also shown to be applicable to fields outside of ICT technology.
