Nov 26, 2009: Open Source Show and Tell at The Team

Once again, The Team (Design Agency) and Osmosoft (Open Source Innovation arm of BT) have asked some of London's open source peeps to come and show what they're up to. Entry is free, each slot is about 10-15 minutes, and afterwards we go for beers at a pub near Borough Market.

Here's the tentative line-up (subject to change):

(Speaker TBC), Canonical - Ubuntu Update
Julien Fourgeaud, Symbian - Managing the Symbian community
Jeremy Ruston, Osmosoft - HTML5 and the slow death of Flash
Leisa Reichelt, Disambiguity.com - Drupal 7 Update
Phil Hawksworth, The Team - Playing with each others toys: Developing with open technologies
Rain Ashford, BBC - Open Source Gaming for Handhelds
Robbie Clutton, BT - iPhone development using web technologies

Keep an eye on The Team's Twitter stream for updates.

Also, Andrew Back is bring along his art exhibition "No Numbers", fresh from an outing at the Horse Hospital:

"No Numbers" is a playful response to Foxx's seminal 1980 electronic music work, Mr No. The music is transformed into a sequence of numbers -- digital samples -- which the viewer is encouraged to copy down using the paper and pencils provided.

At a rate of one number per second it would take 4 weeks to transcribe the original 3'18" work in CD quality. The futility of this task reflects the artist's interest in what we may be compelled to do but that which is ultimately, humanly, impossible.

The reduction to a slow, seemingly random series of numbers highlights the essentially approximate nature of digital sampling. This links to the artist's interest in exploring the aesthetic and cultural questions suggested by the analogue-digital distinction.

The title of the piece suggests remix and reappropriation, but also codes for a putative request from the copyright holder of the original work. Downloading music, we're told, is theft. Four weeks of laborious, transcription seems more like pilgrimage."

Dec 9, 2009: LeWeb'09 at Le 104

LeWeb brings together the best and the brightest people of the web industry from attendees to speakers. Take advantage of a unique setting of networking areas around the main stage to meet your peers, to get inspired, to grow your business, to develop partnerships...
The theme for the 2009 LeWeb Program is "Real-Time Web"

The real time web is taking the world by storm! Twitter has grown exponentially in one year with an extremely simple service that does only one thing keep you in touch with what your friends are doing, in real time. Facebook entirely redesigned its most important assets, its home page and opened its feed to third parties.
Given the growth of the Twitter and Facebook ecosystems with thousands of applications and new uses, startups as well all major players are adapting their services to compete in this environment. There was the static web, the social web and now here comes a new web: the real-time web.

What LeWeb is really about is...

...people
Extending the success of last year's networking venue, this year's LeWeb expands the space with several spaces adjacent to the plenary stage. We want attendees to get the opportunity to meet the speakers, entrepreneurs to meet investors to share ideas, open new opportunities.

...entrepreneurs
The StarUp Competition is an event in the event. We dedicate a space for this competition which is a great opportunity for rising stars to get more visibility in front of business leaders, investors and technology influencers.

Nov 25, 2009: Oxford Geek Night #15 at Jericho Tavern

The geek nights are a way for local web developers, designers, programmers, neophiles or geeks of any other stripe to get together, chat, drink and listen to talks on new technologies and innovations.

Each OGN consists of two keynote talks of 15 minutes each. There are also frenetic bursts of socialising, sometimes adverts for other local groups, but always interspersed with two sets of 5-minute-long microslot sessions.

== Keynotes ==

Keynote speakers are invited to talk at Oxford Geek Nights. Our current confirmed keynote is:

* Linked data on data.gov.uk, by Jeni Tennison, independent consultant specialising in markup technologies and the semantic web.
* Drupal, the semantic web and SEO (tbc), by Fintan Galvin, managing director of IO1 Ltd

== Microslots ==

These are five-minute "lightning" talks that anyone can volunteer for. They're easy to do: pick something that excites you, or a project you've worked on that you think might be of interest; then talk to a friendly audience for just five minutes with a handful of slides. Submit your microslot and we'll see you on the night!

http://natbat.wufoo.com/forms/oxford-geek-night-microslot-proposal/

Currently confirmed microslots:

* Indie Games Oxford, by Gobion Rowlands
* Theatricalia, by Matthew Somerville
* Open Hardware, by Andrew Katz
* Hyperlocality and access to data (tbc), by Zach Beauvais

== The Pitch ==

The Pitch is a series of 60-second open-mic slots, where you can say whatever you want for at most a minute. Advertise a vacancy, announce an event, big-up a local user group or some other society, offer your services or just say hello.

Interested in pitching? Contact me to reserve a slot.

(OGN15 is a FREE event, sponsored by Torchbox, Guardian Open Platform and Moo.)

Mar 2, 2010: Low Tide Sunset Bike Ride at Brighton Marina

Fun cycle dash over the exposed sand flats during one of the lowest tides of the year. The ride usually goes along the beach from the west wall of Brighton Marina to the King Alfred Centre and beyond (or vice versa), or as far as you and your bike can make it.

Time and tide wait for no-one, so if you can't make it to the start, join the ride en route. The ride sets off 30 minutes after meeting, so as to catch the lowest tide and the sunrise. If starting from the Marina, the ride will probably pass under Brighton Pier another 30 minutes after that, if you'd like to meet there.

Following August 2007's Low Tide Naked Critical Mash-Up bike ride, the event is clothing-optional, and riders often go for a skinny-dip in the sea at the end of the ride.

For evening rides, participants can adjourn for drinks afterwards at The Neptune pub.

Bring bikes, waterproofs, warm clothes, towels and lights. Remember to thoroughly wash the salt and sand off your bike afterwards. If you're worried about using your own bike, pick a scrap one up from a skip.

Example tide and sun times from 22 August 2009:

12:58 am BST High tide 7.01 Meters
5:58 am BST Sunrise
7:21 am BST Low tide 0.43 Meters
1:23 pm BST High tide 7.12 Meters
7:42 pm BST Low tide 0.56 Meters
8:05 pm BST Sunset
