Oct 16, 2008: Putting mobile at the heart of marketing at Penthouse Room, Radisson Edwardian Hampshire Hotel

Putting mobile at the heart of marketing
16th Oct 2008
5.30pm, Leicester Square

The Great Mobile Debate – putting mobile at the heart of marketing – Customer acquisition; personalised marketing; relationship building – mobile is the key to the digital world. So what do you need to know to make it work?

There are now more than 3 billion mobile devices world-wide, meaning mobile has already become the most widely used communications channel in the world and brands are starting to take note of the targeting potential to reach their consumers like never before. In addition, precision marketing becomes even more important during tough economic times and agencies and service providers need to help brands build stronger one-to-one relationships with consumers. With the economy making a heavy landing, building and developing these relationships has become more important than ever.

With the mobile marketing industry set to be worth US$1.72 billion in 2008 rising to US$12.09 billion in 2013, (source: Informa Telecoms & Media), don’t miss the opportunity to join leading operators, brands, agencies, content providers, entertainment and media companies at AIME’s Knowledge & Networking seminar, sponsored by WIN plc, on October 16th to discuss how the industry is driving the momentum for mobile marketing adoption.

Speakers:

* David Gibbs, General Manager, BSkyB
* Dan Rosen, Head of Mobile, AKQA
* Matthew Postgate, Controller, Mobile, Future Media & Technology, BBC
* Scott Seaborn, Head of Mobile Technologies, Ogilvy Group
* Sally Weatherall, MD of New Media, WIN plc
* Chair: Andrew Darling, Director of Communications, AIME

In a world of multiple media platforms and channels, nothing can match the ability of the mobile device to trigger a ‘joined-up’ approach to consumer marketing.

Seminar Topics:

* Triggering the consumer ‘digital journey’ with brands
* Mobile calls to action
* How agencies help brands maximise their potential in the mobile channel
* Examining cross media integration
* Balancing expectations with reality
* User experience and brand proposition
* Compliance
* Digital agency and publisher experiences
* Top tips on how to make a success of the mobile channel
* How to leverage mobile for brand awareness, loyalty, direct response

Networking:

After hearing from the experts join WIN plc for drinks & canapés to discuss the issues with industry peers whilst enjoying stunning views of the sun setting over London's skyline.

Dec 9, 2008: AI-2008 Twenty-eighth SGAI International Conference on Artificial Intelligence at Peterhouse

About AI-2008

The Conference is aimed at those who wish to update themselves with news and views of recent developments, understand how other groups are applying the technology and exchange ideas with leading international experts in the field. Our goal, as always, is for our annual conference to be a meeting place for the international knowledge based systems community. The two-track Conference, the Tutorials, Workshop and Exhibition are designed to provide a wide range of options for delegates, whether they are newcomers to the technology or seasoned practitioners. The social programme provides an opportunity to relax, meet old friends and make new contacts. The scope of the conference includes the whole range of AI technologies and application areas. Its principal aims are to review recent technical advances in AI technologies and to show how this leading edge technology has been applied to solve business problems.

To meet these objectives, AI-2008 has parallel technical and application streams of refereed and invited papers on both technology and applications. The programme also includes tutorials to provide greater depth in selected topics. Our aim is to have the widest possible appeal to the industrial, commercial and academic communities throughout Europe.

As in previous years the conference aims to bring together researchers and developers from a wide range of academic, research and industrial backgrounds. Delegates will have the opportunity to discuss their ideas and problems with research staff working at the leading edge of AI developments and with developers with experience of the practical issues of getting systems into operation. The conference will qualify for the IEE and BCS CPD schemes.

In addition to the formal sessions, the conference programme includes a welcome reception and a Gala Dinner. Plenty of time has been inserted into the programme to allow discussions with other delegates and time to make new contacts and renew old acquaintances. AI-2008 offers a valuable opportunity to keep up to date with developments in AI and to share experiences in the practical issues of developing AI based systems.

Dec 1, 2008: Mobile Monday at CBI Conference Centre

Autumn Schedule Kicks Off

Our Autumn schedule kicked off on Monday with a panel session on Mobile Platforms, and saw nearly 200 participants in an interesting and lively exchange of views between the panellists and between the audience and panel.

Annie Turner, editor of telecomseurope.net gave us some of her birthday evening to chair the session (thanks Annie!) with panellists Ricardo Varela (Yahoo!), Bent Last (EMCC Software), Simon Rockman (SonyEricsson), Nick Allott (OMTP) and Marko Balabanovic (lastminute.com) offering a range of different (and controversial) perspectives.

Some resulting blog posts:

Simon Judge

Kai Hendry

Once again, many thanks to our kind sponsors, Yahoo! and EMCC Software for facilitating the evening.

The calendar for the rest of the year looks like this, the dates are fixed, the topics may be refined:

13th October: NFC
10th November: 3rd Birthday Party, The Year in Review
1st December: Social Networking Revisited

Looking forward to seeing everyone then!

Oct 13, 2008: Mobile Monday at CBI Conference Centre

Nov 13, 2008: Distance Lab: Free Technology at Horizon

*distance* lab

OPEN STUDIO 004

*Slow Technology*

*Thursday 13 November 2008* / 12 noon - 5 pm

Horizon Scotland / Forres, Scotland

/Free of charge, spaces limited //(see below for booking information)/

Interested in what's going on at Distance Lab? At our "Open Studio"
events we show you how we're pushing the limits of technology and design to overcome the disadvantages of distance. We also expose you to some of the most innovative research ideas and personalities from other parts of the world.

The theme of this event is *Slow Technology*, an extension of notions from the "slow food" movement into the design of new technologies.
Instead of speed and efficiency, slow technology emphasises the quality, locality, and humanity of the total experience.

Distance Lab researchers *Costas Bissas* and *Tomoko Hayashi* will describe our ongoing endeavors in the realm of "slow technology", including Neuromantic, a project that aims to encourage rural modern life through the use of new technologies without altering the authenticity of the environment, local uniqueness and resources.

/Special guest speaker:/

Glorianna Davenport

MIT Media Laboratory

*Slow Stories*

Glorianna Davenport is head of the Media Fabrics (formerly Interactive
Cinema) group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. Trained as a documentary filmmaker, Glorianna has achieved international recognition for her work in new media forms. Her research explores fundamental issues related to the collaborative co-construction of digital media experiences, where the task of narration is split among authors, consumers, and computer mediators.

In her talk, Glorianna will frame her work within the "slow" theme. Time is central to our experience of life and to the concept of story; time is required to experience ones own story, to author story, and to experience the stories of others. Today the agility of computer networks and their associated technologies allow a new class of story: slow stories. For instance, a story of a character - be it a glacier, a day in the life of a salt marsh, or a human being maturing through a complex web of circumstance - can be developed for slow release, in a time coordinated with story development.

A light lunch and presentations will be followed by open studio time during which you can visit our lab space, check out our equipment, talk to our researchers, and see our latest project demonstrations.

Outline agenda:

12:00 - Registration opens and light lunch available

13:00 - Presentations begin promptly

15:00 - Research demonstrations and discussion in our studio space

17:00 - End

This Open Studio will be immediately followed by a Moray Small Business Club event in the same location. For more information, contact the Moray Small Business Club.

*Space is limited and bookings must be requested online...*

More information and booking request form:

Distance Lab general information:

http://www.distancelab.org/

LOCATION INFORMATION:

This event will be taking place at Horizon Scotland in Forres, Scotland,
IV36 2AB. Inverness airport is only 20 miles away, and Aberdeen airport is about 70 miles away. A variety of budget airlines and car hire companies serve these airports. Frequent train and bus service is available to Forres and other nearby towns. Plenty of inexpensive accommodation is available at hotels and B&Bs in Forres and Findhorn (on the Moray coast).

Feb 16, 2009: Mobile World Congress 2009 at Fira de Barcelona

Best show on the planet if you're interested in mobile communications or producing content for the mobile platform. Book accommodation early (like today) because hotel rooms near the convention centre are vastly overpriced. Best option is to hire an appartment. Works out a lot cheaper if you're able (or willing) to share.

Jan 19, 2009: LCEA09 Symposium: Completing the Circle at British Computer Society

Incorporating Evaluation Methods in Creative Work

This is a one-day symposium, endorsed by the Computer Arts Society and the Design Research Society. Papers will focus on the use of novel methods, or methods newly borrowed from other disciplines, in evaluating the user’s or audience’s response to media such as websites, portable media (such as iPods, PSPs), pervasive games, film, videogames, technology-rich performance, interactive art.

An aspect of interest is the use of interactive technologies to assist evaluative processes as well as to deliver interactive experiences. The aim is to share knowledge about evaluation methods and to debate the role and value of different forms of evaluation in relation to the arts and media. With this in mind, well-argued papers questioning the very idea of evaluation (especially scientific evaluation methods) in the arts, will also be accepted.

All papers will be peer-reviewed by an international panel. The best papers will be put forward for a special issue of the journal Digital Creativity.

The event is organised by the Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts and is supported by the Design Research Society and the Computer Arts Society, a specialist group of the British Computer Society.

Nov 11, 2008: Mobile Technology in Travel at ExCel

Mobile is a force you can no longer ignore

Already the most widely used digital device on the planet, mobile adoption is growing unprecedentedly. Technology and the mobile user have now come of age to create the most disruptive technology since the web. We stand on the verge of a revolution which will fundamentally affect the way your customers will interact with your brand and purchase travel. Your customers have indicated their desire to use mobile - it's time to do something about it!

On 11th November at Mobile Technology in Travel@WTM 2008 the innovators of the travel industry come together alongside the major mobile companies to offer you unparalleled insight into mobile and show you how it will make you money. With customers turning to mobile a vast opportunity is being created - one that the travel industry is uniquely positioned to capitalise on.
Hear from top travel companies and leading mobile innovators such as:

* Richard Saggers, Head of Mobile Advertising, Vodafone Group Services Limited
* Matt Jerwood, Director of Business Development, WAYN
* Mark Heynen, Program Manager, Google
* Chris Carmichael, Innovation and Planning, British Airways
* Marcus Casey, Director of Marketing and Customer Relations, Lufthansa
* Geoffrey Breeze, VP EMEA Brand Marketing and Services, Sabre
Increased functionality and enhanced usability now offer customers a viable alternative to traditional web browsing. Couple this with mobile social networking and location based services and the full impact of mobile becomes apparent. Marketers have described mobile as 'the perfect marketing tool' for its potential to offer rich, targeted advertising alongside engaging interactivity.

But time is vital; the opportunity to take a first-mover advantage is still there but rapidly diminishing. The statistics speak for themselves and demand your immediate attention:

* Over 3bn mobile users worldwide compared to just PC 1.3bn users
* 100% penetration in developed markets, and 50% worldwide
* 680m mobile internet users across the lucrative emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India & china
* Mobile search revenues set to triple to $2.2bn by 2012
* US carriers seeing 20% month-on-month growth in their mobile channels
* In Japan more people access the internet through a mobile device than a PC
* 1/2 million page views and a 12.5% click through rate from mobile advertising campaigns in 12 hours
* 9.2m US customer have already made a purchase through mobile and 50% expect to do so in the near future

Feb 8, 2009: IUI 2009 at Sundial Beach and Golf Resort

IUI 2009 is the annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as the principal international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces.

Steering Committee

The steering committee is in charge of the scientific and organizational direction of the conference series. The committee establishes the peer reviewing standards and methods, selects the general and program committee chairs, and decides the location of each year's conference.

Angel Puerta, Chair, RedWhale Software, USA
W. Lewis Johnson, USC/ISI, USA
Mark Maybury, MITRE, USA
Doug Riecken, IBM Watson Research Center, USA
Candace Sidner, BAE Systems, AIT, USA
Robert St. Amant, North Carolina State University, USA

Contact the chair at scchair at iuiconf.org

History of IUI

In March 1988, a group of researchers gathered in Monterey, California to participate in a workshop titled: "Architectures for Intelligent Interfaces". It was the beginning of what at first would be a slow but steady development of the field of Intelligent User Interfaces. Three years later, the book "Intelligent User Interfaces" was published edited by Joe Sullivan and Sherman Tyler, the organizers of the workshop. The book highlighted the main papers presented in the workshop and served as a basis for not only future work, but also future events that continued that work. It was not until 1993, however, that Bill Hefley organized the First International Workshop on Intelligent User Interfaces, which took place in Orlando, Florida. The event, sponsored by ACM, attracted a nascent group of researchers whose work clearly defined the field as a novel and promising intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction.

With a growing body of work in the field of IUI and a lack of an established outlet for such work at the time, Angel Puerta and Ernest Edmonds led an effort to create a permanent leading forum for research in intelligent user interfaces. The result was the first IUI conference in 1997 defined as a yearly event and conceived from the start as a highly selective program focusing on the quality of research, and on the value of the contribution of each accepted paper. Over the ten-year span since that initial event, the IUI conferences have established the significance and breadth of the field, and have built a valuable reference body that inspires new research every day across the globe.
