Aug 28, 2009: Calgary Critical Mass Bike Ride — August at Eau Claire Plaza

On the last Friday of every month, cyclists around the world gather to ride the streets together to assert the rights of non-automotive traffic to use the streets.

The ride gathers at the plaza starting at 5:30. We usually head out closer to 6 for a ride that usually goes for half an hour to an hour. The route of the ride can be different every month, usually just made up along the way.

Newcomers are always welcome.

Please bring noisemakers - whistles, bells, etc.

Look for folks just hanging out with their bicycle in the plaza when you arrive. Please don't hesitate to ask someone: "hey, are you here for critical mass?"

(Yes, the rides go on all year - regardless of weather.)

Jul 16, 2009: Allied Media Conference at Wayne State University

11th Allied Media Conference
"We Are Ready New: Media and creativity to transform our selves and our world"
July 16-19, 2009
Detroit, Michigan

The 11th AMC will advance our visions for a just and creative world. It will be a laboratory for media-based solutions to the matrix of life-threatening problems we face. For the past 10 years, we have evolved our definition of media, and the role it can play in our lives – from zines to video-blogging to breakdancing, to communicating solidarity and creating justice. Each conference builds off the previous one and plants the seeds for the next. Ideas and relationships evolve year-round, incorporating new networks of media-makers and social justice organizers. The 2009 AMC will draw strength from our converging movements to face the challenges and opportunities of our current moment.

Be a part of it at www.alliedmediaconference.org

Aug 31, 2009: Evolution: A Tangled Bank • Burning Man 2009 at Black Rock City

In 2009, the Burning Man will rise above a “tangled bank” consisting of irregular wooden triangles. No two elements of this organic composition will be quite the same; together they’ll create what’s best described as a chaotic truss. At night the tangled bank will come alive with luminous life forms scratching, crawling and slithering their way through it. This space will also house a pond known as the Gene Pool. Strange Ur-creatures will peep outward from the surface of this primal soup. The central tree supporting Burning Man, beribboned with a double helix, will exist in flux: switching on and switching off, changing colors unexpectedly.
