We are delighted to welcome you to Sydney for the FOSS4G 2009 Conference, which will take place from Tuesday 20 - Friday 23 October, 2009.

FOSS4G is heralded as the international "gathering of tribes" of open source geospatial communities, where developers and users show off their latest software and projects. The theme for 2009 is "User Driven", highlighting the power of Open Source to solve business problems.

About FOSS4G

The spatial industry is undergoing rapid innovations and the open source spatial community is one of the forces driving the change. The FOSS4G conference is more than a melting pot of great ideas it is a catalyst and opportunity to unite behind the many successful geospatial products, standards and protocols. The 2007 conference was held in Victoria, BC, Canada and was a huge success. The 2008 conference was held in Cape Town, South Africa and proved to be a fantastic event.

What to expect in 2009

FOSS4G 2009 Sydney will be the seventh "formal" conference of the open source geospatial community and is expected to focus on the increasing importance of FOSS4G in the public and private enterprise.

FOSS4G is a unique event which collects together a global community into a single location for an intensive week of activity. Year on year FOSS4G provides a great opportunity to take part in a very special event, where ideas mix together with language to create a network of collaboration and creativity.

Jul 10, 2009: ACO2 - "The Fiddlers" at Riverside Theatres Parramatta

Riverside Theatres presents ACO2 ‘The Fiddlers’
Friday 10th July at 7:30pm. One performance only

The Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Emerging Artists ensemble, AC02, will celebrate two centuries of string music in a special performance at Riverside Theatres. The country’s most exciting young string players will pay homage to the tradition of folk fiddling in The Fiddlers on Friday 10th July. This will be the only Sydney performance of this fantastic concert.

ACO2 connects the next generation of talented young Australian musicians with the stars of the Australian Chamber Orchestra in a company distinguished by its fresh, energetic performance style.

The Fiddlers is a tribute to the Finland tradition of folk fiddling which has influenced composers for many generations. Composer Rautavaara demonstrates this inspiration in The Fiddlers which encapsulate the very spirit of village musicians who filled the countryside with their singing and playing. In keeping with a mood of dance and delight Sallinen draws on two important figures of the Spanish culture. He couples the famous ladies man, Don Juan, with the delusional but romantic knight, Don Quixote in a composition of light hearted dance reminiscent of youthful joy. The romantic mood continues with the warm flowing melodies of Dvork and Serenades evokes a romance indicative of the period and his homeland Bohemia.

ACO violist Steve King facilitates the connection of ACO and ACO2 through his role as education liaison officer. With a PhD in chamber music he is well qualified and assists in getting the best string players from around the country involved in ACO2. The 17 player band is encouraged to perform at the highest level and the ACO2 ensemble strives to take top quality music and spread it beyond the city concert halls.

“ACO2 wants to continue to launch tours in the great facilities of Riverside Theatres” said King. “We want all students to have something that will last a bit longer, the gift of music and the opportunity to have heard or even taken part in a potentially life-changing concert that will stick in the memory.”
The program ACO2 is presenting covers a wide scope of International music from the notorious music of Vivaldi, the thriving tradition of Finnish folk tunes, and to a cello concerto featuring the principle cello of ACO, Tipi. With its lush, rich harmonies and frenzied, energetic melodies Dvorak’s Serande for Strings as the grand finale will complete the performance. The repertoire will be performed by upcoming Artists in the ACO2 ensemble led by principle 2nd Violin Helena Rathbone.

Aug 29, 2009: Rainbow's End at Riverside Theatres

Christine Anu,
Lillian Crombie
and Chenoa Deemal
to star in Jane Harrison’s
Rainbow’s End
produced by Riverside Productions at Riverside Theatres

Jane Harrison’s play, Rainbow’s End, is a snapshot of Australian life in the nineteen fifties as experienced by three generations of Koori women. This Sydney premiere features film and television veteran Lillian Crombie as Nan Dear, popular music performer Christine Anu as her daughter Gladys and newcomer Chenoa Deemal debuts as teenage granddaughter Dolly. With humour and gentle irony Rainbow’s End skillfully captures the optimistic spirit of the women as they strive to belong in conservative rural Australia. Directed by Craig Ilott, this funny and engaging play is produced by Riverside Theatres for a limited season from Saturday August 29 to September 12.

The three women live in a shack on the flood plain of the Goulburn River near Shepparton in Victoria. The time is the 1950’s and the royal visit is creating a climate of `queen and country’ pride in the post-colonial world of Menzies’ Australia. Although Nan believes their life on “the flats” represents a certain progress, Gladys is eager to secure a real house and job for Dolly in town.

“It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to do my first play,’ says Christine Anu ”a wonderful storyline about three generations of women on their own personal journeys.”

Like Jane Harrison’s extraordinarily successful previous play Stolen, Rainbow’s End is a story of hope, of love and of the search for identity and belonging. Most of all it is a celebration of the triumph of human spirit as the three feisty women fight for an equal chance and acceptance in a white community. With music from the period, this funny and moving play has great heart.

"I decided to write about the '50s, but instead of writing about the obvious heroes, I chose to write about the unsung heroes," said the plays writer Jane Harrison.

Rainbow’s End had a successful Melbourne production and played at Rumbalara, the Aboriginal settlement which inspired the work. It has also had a season in Japan. The Riverside season is the Sydney premiere. This highly pertinent theatre work is included on the HSC syllabus for English for NSW.

‘Rainbow’s End is a testament to the transformative power of learning. While it is set in another era the message is relevant to the current situation in many indigenous communities and amongst cultural minorities. But first and foremost Rainbow’s End is a truly feel good night in the theatre’ says the play’s producer Camilla Rountree.

‘Harrison's writing is full of subtleties, from the ironies of Gladys' patriotic enthusiasm for the Queen's visit, to her mention of her husband's wartime service, and an awareness of the post-colonial implications of the Britannica - with a reference to the characters' lack of citizenship’ Melbourne Age

‘…high-quality, thought-provoking and emotionally powerful drama’ Melbourne Age
