ledges and bones dance project: "Politics of Intimacy"

Sonya Delwaide digs into her French-Canadian heritage to understand the meaing behind Quebec's motto "Je me souviens" (I remember). A source of debate through time, the motto has come to signify what people choose to remember. The "endlessly inventive choreographer" (San Francisco Magazine) brings up images of collective and personal memories to create a quartet and duet that explore the way we remember. Danced by Peiling Kao and former ODC/Dance members Andrea Basile, Brandon "Private" Freeman and Yukie Fujimoto, "Je Me Souviens" will bring up our own memories, both public and private.

Holly Johnston's "Politics of Intimacy" unites six dancers in an exploration of gender and sexual orientation, traversing the push and pull of private and public forces. How does societal influence form our identity and how do we reconcile conflicting identities in a romantic parntership? Gay, straight, single, coupled or married, all kinds of relationships are examined through ledges and bones dance project's "fearless and fluid" movement (Dance Magazine).

Telarc International, a leader in jazz recording since the 1980s, adds another stellar name to its impressive roster by bringing pianist Cyrus Chestnut into the fold. Chestnut has recently finished an album with the help of producer Elaine Martone (McCoy Tyner, Tierney Sutton, Ray Brown). Genuine Chestnut, a mix of original material with afew covers, is scheduled for release in February 2006.

“There’s a good team at Telarc, and an excellent reputation in jazz that spans almost two decades,” says Chestnut. “I’m very honored to be a part of the legacy of great artists who have recorded with them.”
Born in January 1963, Chestnut first sat down at the piano with his father at age five, and began his formal training at seven. Years later, armed with a Berklee degree in jazz composition and arranging, he spent several years as a sideman for high-profile artists like Jon Hendricks, Betty Carter, Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison.

Prior to joining Telarc, Chestnut recorded a string of records on Atlantic between 1993 and 2001, including the highly regarded Earth Stories (1995) and Cyrus Chestnut (1998). His variety of influences has made for an eclectic style over the years, although gospel has been a recurring thread in many of his recordings.

Chestnut says the new record on Telarc is intended as, among other things, a message to those who have suggested in recent years that he may have lost some of his earlier steam in the jazz scene. “A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this record,” he says. “Maybe getting to the next level in life requires pushing just a little bit harder and giving just a little bit more. The compositions on this record are much different than on any of my other records. To me, this music is a lot more organic than it’s ever been before.”

Telarc’s Martone agrees. “Cyrus is a special guy - a quiet, soulful man,” she says. “We’re very pleased to have him with us, given the substantial body of work he’s already established and the reputation that comes along with it. He waited to get to Telarc to make his most personal recording to date. Genuine Chestnut is just what the title suggests “an album straight from Cyrus Chestnut’s heart and soul.”

More than anything else, Poncho Sanchez is a storyteller. And, as leader of the most popular Latin jazz group in the world today, it's his congas and seasoned ensemble that do the talking. Live in concert or on recordings, they spin vivacious tales that pay homage to the glories of a half-century tradition that was born when Afro-Cuban rhythms merged with bebop. One-on-one, the Chicano conguero is equally expressive, recounting in vivid detail the encounters, friendships, and passions that have contributed to his remarkable career as a bandleader and recording artist. Behind the choice of every song, album title and guest artist, there's a story Poncho Sanchez delights in telling.

Before conguero Poncho Sanchez started his Latin Jazz Band, which has gone on to become the premier Latin jazz ensemble working today, he served an important apprenticeship with Cal Tjader, a pioneering Latin jazz bandleader since the 1950s. Sanchez worked in Tjader’s group from the beginning of 1975 until Cal’s death in May 1982. Now he’s put together a group of fellow Tjader friends and alumni—bassist Rob Fisher, drummer Vince Lateano, and Roger Glenn on vibes—to pay musical tribute to Cal, their friend and colleague, and a towering figure in Latin jazz.

Bay area artist Lorna Stevens and poet Rebecca Foust will present a reading, images and discussion on their soon to be released full-length book, God, Seed. God, Seed is a collection of original poems and art about the environment and its seasons. Foust will read her poems, Stevens will discuss the development of the images, and both will describe the collaborative process. They will also discuss the challenges of finding a publisher and of producing and marketing a book that combines poetry and four-color images.
