Dec 4, 2009: The Aggrolites Live in Berkeley at Shattuck Down Low Lounge

Ineffable Records & Unkle Fun Presents:

THE AGGROLITES

The Aggrolites are more than a band they are a movement unto themselves. They carry a banner - one created with their own hands. This banner reads, “Dirty Reggae,” and represents their signature fusion of reggae, soul, grit and determination. For seven magnificent years, this dirty reggae bunch has rolled from city to city, across the pond and up main street USA. They rally the kids, the parents, the students, the cops, the bosses and the drifters. The people come, they relish in The Aggrolites, the dirty reggae and the joy that comes with it all. The liberating rhythms and catchy grooves demand a return trip.
Out of the Los Angeles school of hard knocks, The Aggrolites have earned a Ph.D in "feel good music." On the road they educate with the thunder and punch of the reggae drums and bass, the ripping, soulful melodies of the organ and guitars, and Jesse Wagner’s voice - a gift from the heavens, a perfectly intact gift from Otis, Sam, Ray and Wilson.

THE HOTEL UTAH WEEKLY OPEN MIC
with host Mr. Andrew
http://theutah.org

The Hotel Utah open mic is the epicenter of San Francisco's singer-songwriter community. Its stage attracts performers at all stages of their careers: from seasoned veterans to first-timers. It attracts music fans who know a good thing when they see it.
The musicians who come regularly don't come just to get a little "stage time" - they come because of the community that calls Monday at The Utah home - and the musicians that come in for the first time eventually start to come regularly...

So come on down this monday, have a beer, bring your guitar if that's your thing, and sit back and enjoy.

Charlie Varon is very funny The New Yorker; An uncannily gifted mimic Washington Post; San Franciscos brightest satiric star SF Chronicle Rabbi Sam is the spiritual genius who will bring American Judaism into the 21st century. Or hes completely out of his mind. You decide. The play tells the story of a rabbi who wants to reinvent American Judaism, and the congregation that hires him. Some people love the new rabbi. Some cant stand him. And, of course, some cant stand each other. RABBI SAM is a play for Jews, Gentiles & anyone who has ever attended a meeting. The San Francisco Chronicle has credited Charlie Varon with redefining the art form of solo theater. Hes the creator of the hit shows Rush Limbaugh in Night School and The Peoples Violin, and director of Dan Hoyles Tings Dey Happen. This is Charlie Varons first new full-length play in nine years. The Marsh is thrilled to have back on stage our edgy, comic genius!

Dec 5, 2009: Opening the Essay: A workshop and reading with poet, Jane Hirshfield at California Institute of Integral Studies

Sat, Dec 5, Workshop: 4pm-5:30pm; Reading: 7pm-9pm

The California Institute of Integral Studies presents "Opening the Essay: A Workshop and Reading for Artists and Others" with poet, Jane Hirshfield.

About the Workshop: This brief workshop will explore essay writing as a tool of opening: a way to expand investigation, discovery, and understanding for those who may not ordinarily or primarily write in this form. The essay form has its roots in a word meaning "try," "trial," "test," and "weighing"; it is a way to sketch and stretch through into new and deepened realms. We'll look at how essays think, how to choose a subject, and the many possibilities inherent in the form.

Participants should bring paper, pen, and a first sentence and title from an essay (by someone else) that they admire.

Following the workshop, Jane Hirshfield will read from her work, beginning at 7pm.

Jane Hirshfield's work appears in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Orion, and five editions of The Best American Poetry, is the author of six prize-winning poetry collections, including After and Given Sugar, Given Salt, as well as a now classic book of essays, Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry. She has also edited and cotranslated several anthologies including Women in Praise of the Sacred: Forty-three Centuries of Spiritual Poetry by Women. In 2004 the Academy of American Poets honored her with the 70th Academy Fellowship for distinguished poetic achievement.

This event is sponsored by the Writing, Consciousness, and Creative Inquiry Department and the Public Programs Department at CIIS.
For the first time ever, Data Beez is spreading those same addictive, low-tech sounds across the West Coast. This is an East meets West event: Minusbaby, Paris, and Fx6Ex6 prerepsent New York City while Trash80, Starpause, Crashfaster and Daniel Rehn represent California. It signals an evolving movement and sets a precedent for the future of chip music on the West Coast.

If you like events like this, please contribute to the DNA Lounge Legal Defense Fund so that we can keep bringing them to you! Although these cherished sites have been depicted countless times, Marshall's paintings stand apart by incorporating images of the slaves who supported plantation life.
