Jul 11, 2009: London Literature Festival - Claire Harman and Deborah Moggach: The Austen Industry at Southbank Centre

Jane Austen is more than just a classic author. From TV and film adaptations to romantic comedy, to the very heritage industry itself, her iconic status pervades contemporary culture. Clare Harman, author of Jane's Fame: How Austen Conquered the World, discusses the Austen industry with novelist and screenwriter Deborah Moggach who won a BAFTA for her screenplay Pride and Prejudice.

What does our love affair with Austen's characters and stories signify about us? And will her critical reputation outlive the cultural phenomenon she has become?

Jul 9, 2009: Reducing Risk and Improving Results: Agile at University of Westminster

How to avoid the failure, frustration and over-work in web-project work. Produce better projects on budget and on time using Agile techniques.

Web project work has a guilty little secret: much of the time, projects end up with everybody hating each other. Because the client has changed their mind about what it is that they wanted. Because they didn’t really know what they wanted in the first place – but it’s certainly not what you produced. Because the money has run out but there are still fifty items on the to-do list.

Agile methods are a group of new techniques which make it easier to deliver IT and web-based projects in environments of uncertainty and constant change. Did you ever try to plan a project but things didn't go quite as you expected? Agile methods are designed to deal with that kind of experience. They emphasise the delivery of projects in short iterations: the end of each iteration, priorities can be re-ordered or new ones can be added making sure that you are always delivering to the client the things that they value most.

● Agile working techniques offer an alternative to project frustration and failure.

● Clients get faster results and the chance to refine their thinking as the project progresses.

● Project managers receive clearer communications and better understanding of client needs and time allocation.

● Developers and designers don’t waste time on work that isn’t really needed.

● Transparency during the production process means that change is on-going rather than crammed in at the end when everyone has lost interest and the budget has already been spent.

This course will give you an immediate feel for the difference that working using Agile techniques can have for the IT projects that you work on and techniques and procedures that you can put into practice immediately to help deliver better projects, on time and on budget.

Suitable for people working as either a Producer or Project Manger or Software Developer in any software development environment. Also suitable for people involved in the specification and procurement of software. No programming skills required.

Tutor: Mark Stringer. Mark has previously worked as a project manager for Soda Creative. Previous to this, Mark worked for ten years in various development and project management roles in the software industry. Mark has also worked as a researcher in Computer Science at Cambridge University and for Xerox Research Centre Europe.
Jul 18, 2009: Shoot Shoreditch Interactive Photography Treasure Hunt at Cargo

After this year’s successful spring event at Tate Modern, Shoot Experience returns to its East London roots for the fifth consecutive year to host Shoot Shoreditch.

Held at Cargo, Shoot Shoreditch is an interactive photography treasure hunt for the general public. Participants sign up in teams of 2–4 and are tasked on the day with deciphering clues that will lead them to different destinations around Shoreditch, EC2. Having deciphered the clues, teams take fun and creative photographs to portray the answers.

They return to Cargo at the end of the day to submit their photos and relax as all photos are shown in a big screen slide show and judged. Winners are honoured in an awards ceremony to finish the day, and prizes are given for categories such as Best Team Photo and Most Creative Photo, as well as for individual clues.

There will be eight clues in total: some will lead participants to actual destinations and some are more open, designed to encourage creative interpretation.

Shoot Shoreditch is an event open to anyone with a thirst for creative adventure. All it takes is an enthusiastic team and a digital camera to re-discover this eclectic London borough.

All participants must register their team and purchase tickets in advance on-line at www.shootexperience.com. You do not have to be a professional photographer, all that is required is creativity and enthusiasm.

Jul 18, 2009: Super Furry Animals Warehouse Party II at Corsica Arts Studio

After the sell-out success of the last SFA after party following their Roundhouse shows in Nov 2007, the Furries are returning to Corsica Studios to throw another all night warehouse bash. Straight after their Somerset House show on July 18th they’ll be hot-footing it over the river with a host of their favourite DJs in tow - except the music this time will involve a very different type of acid…..

After the all-out techno onslaught of their last event with sets from Andrew Weatherall and Evil Eddie Richards, this time they’re taking a trip back to explore their deep-fried acid-folk origins.

Expect wild and wonderful DJ sets from SFA members Gruff Rhys and Guto Pryce themselves, buckets of psychedelic freak beat fuzzy madness from special guests Cherrystones (Whatever We Want, Poptones), Andy Votel (Twisted Nerve, B Music, Finders Keepers), Pete Fowler (Monsterism) and fellow patriot Huw Evans.

Next door there’s a whole other room of mutant techno from Cian Ciaran’s Acid Casuals plus a slick mixture of kraut-rock, cosmic disco and techno grooves from Allez Allez, Jagz Kooner (Sabres of Paradise), Copious Breaks & Tomahawk – Psychemagik and the Kosmische Club DJs.

Add to the mix a selection of mind-bending visuals, B-Movie trailers, kaleidescopic light-shows and – believe it or not - a Kool-Aid bar - and you’d be forgiven for thinking that this was some Merry Pranksters’ gathering in Haight Ashbury at the tail-end of the sixties not 21st Century Elephant & Castle.

Oct 26, 2009: Christopher Hogwood and Britten Sinfonia at Queen Elizabeth Hall

A celebratory concert that features works by composers who all have significant anniversaries during 2009 including Handel, Martinů, Mendelssohn and Haydn. The opening fanfare-like Overture from Purcell heralds Handel’s majestic and exquisite Concerto Grosso in F major. Martinu’s distinct 20th century neo-classical style blends seamlessly with Haydn’s lesser-known and exultant Symphony No. 70 in D major and Mendelssohn’s lyrically poignant overture to The Fair Melusina. The orchestra will be conducted for the first time by Christopher Hogwood, a leading expert in classical repertoire and one of the finest exponents of Martinů’s music.
Hailed as both a gifted pianist and imaginative composer, Gwilym presents a new work in which he will also perform. Forming the perfect partner to Gwilym’s work Ravel’s Piano Trio has a texture of sound unusually rich for a chamber work and is known for the high level of virtuosity required. Messian’s Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus is a movement from his Quartet for the End of Time, composed while Messiaen was held in a prisoner of war camp.

Jul 25, 2009: July London All Nighter at Old Royal Naval College

Itinerary:

Due to engineering works, we will change the itinerary a bit. Instead of sunset from the Royal Observatory, we will walk towards the O2 via the Thames Path. It does not look like a long walk but I am sure we each need a torch on the way back. We aim to be there by 8.50PM so we can shoot the sunset behind Canary Wharf until 9.30PM then we head back to Greenwich and take the DLR to Bank station. We get out and walk around the City.

We head off towards Westminster, Green Park and Leicester Square where we will hunt for food and a place to sit. Depending on where we want to shoot sunrise, we have time since sunrise is at 5.13AM, we stay for half an hour for that.

I will take the new Olympus E-P1 with me so those who want to play with it in between shoots.

On food: We have dinner early and bring a sandwich and drink because there is none available where we are going.

Bring: Camera, tripod, one or two lenses, food, torch and you :D

Jul 10, 2009: Manuel Castells in Conversation at One Alfred Place

Manuel Castells is our foremost theorist of the power of communication in modern society

His new book Communication Power is a natural progression from his 'Network Society' trilogy - a powerful, forward-looking analysis of communication in the Network Society

4ip are delighted to host a breakfast seminar with Manuel Castells on 10 July at One Alfred Place

In this wide-ranging and powerful book, Manuel Castells analyses the transformation of the global media industry by this revolution in communication technologies. He argues that a new communication system, mass self-communication, has emerged, and power relationships have been profoundly modified by the emergence of this new communication environment. Created in the commons of the Internet this communication can be locally based, but globally connected. It is built through messaging, social networks sites, and blogging, and is now being used by the millions around the world who have access to the Internet.

Justly celebrated for his analysis of the network society, Castells here builds on that work, offering a well grounded and immensely challenging picture of communication and power in the 21st century.
Jul 10, 2009: Fundraising with Twitter at The Hub Kings Cross

You're probably hearing quite a bit about Twitter now and how some charities are starting to use it.

But can you use it for fundraising? If so, how can your charity benefit from it? Find how from UK Fundraising's Howard Lake as he guides you through getting started with Twitter as a fundraising tool.

* how does Twitter fit into your fundraising plans?
* making the most of your Twitter account and presence
* building up your network of supporters by listening and following
* different types of fundraising using Twitter
* how to measure your impact

It is still early days for Twitter as a fundraising tool and we don't pretend to grasp it all.

But if you're looking for practical ideas and a helping hand, Howard Lake has over 14 years' experience of reporting on, thinking about, and training charities in using the Internet to fundraise.

Join us at the The Hub, King's Cross, for live demonstrations of Twitter in action. Bring your own laptop if you want and get online using the venue's wi-fi system. Laptops not required of course - just curiosity about whether Twitter can work for your organisation.

NB. Ticket prices are £90 + VAT, and £175+ VAT. The VAT will be included when you pay on Paypal.

You can opt to pay by invoice.

"Having decided that the NCPTA needed to utilise digital media to the full, we went onto open a Twitter account. The question was, what do we do next? The Fundraising with Twitter course, was a fast and furious two hours, packed with practical hints and tips, to guide you through the maze of things to consider. I came away more enlightened, with a clear idea of how to take our communication with our supporters to another level".

Jul 8, 2009: London Calling Photographers meetup at Ye Olde Cock Tavern

London Calling Photographers is a group of photographers from London. The main target is to create a series of exhibitions, in order to gain attention on the quality of the "Londoners with Camera" as collectivity, and not just as single photographers

Members meet every fortnight, Wednesday evening, to discuss, propose projects and to host a session of "live critics" in which photos are actually criticized!

This upcoming meet live commentary:
This time the theme for the live commentary is: Water - let's cool this heat :D

Remember that the live commentary is not an assignment. You do not need to bring a new picture with you, you can do if you want, but you can bring an old photo you want to receive some critics on. Please if possible bring the image on a memory stick or similar. Printed pictures are great too. An image shown on an Iphone probably won't do your picture justice.

Send images by email or alternately bring the image on a USB Stick.
