Jan 26, 2010: Web Project Management at BSG House

Managing web projects is difficult: mixed teams, experts in different areas and stakeholders frequently pull you in different directions and tight deadlines add additional pressures. Throw in changing requirements, high expectations, tight budgets and time restrictions and what is needed is a workable project management technique to provide structure and control that’s flexible enough to handle evolving requirements. This course adopts an agile approach that combines the right level of control with flexibility.

Who should attend?
Web managers or marketers who want to discover how project management tools and techniques can deliver projects on-brief, on-time and on-budget. It would also benefit project managers looking for ways to achieve greater business benefit and flexibility, without relinquishing control, and anyone with an expanding web portfolio looking to manage resources more effectively.

How will I benefit?
You will discover what makes web projects succeed or fail and examine the different methods of managing projects including when each is appropriate. A big plus will be ensuring that your projects deliver tangible benefits over shorter timescales. You will also acquire the knowledge to define the objectives of your web project to gain the right level of buy-in and support from the rest of your organisation.

What will I learn?
The fundamentals of project management: what it is, why projects go wrong, and what’s different about web projects. You will be given an overview of different project management methods (traditional/waterfall, agile and incremental delivery) and be shown how to manage each. The course covers the full project management lifecycle from the basics of getting started (defining the project and scope, prioritising and estimating features) to delivering in increment and deployment. We’ll look at the tools for managing and communicating progress, quality (test-first approach) and how to assess and manage risk to avoid common pitfalls.

Key learning outcomes

• Quickly and effectively capture requirements and deliver on-time and to budget, even in a rapidly changing environment

• Deliver early return-on-investment using agile incremental delivery methods

• Meet all stakeholder requirements by introducing shared goals

• Ensure that the delivery is of the highest quality

This is a talk about the the Naked Objects methodology given by Dan Haywood who also has a book out on the subject. Naked Objects is a framework to help you develop the domain layer using the principles of domain-driven design. Exposing the domain objects in this way rapidly develops the ubiquitous language, while supporting a model-driven design. Come along and join in a discussion on how Naked Objects supports DDD.

Nov 17, 2009: RIBA Building Futures 'This House Believes We Have Lost Sight of the Future' at BFI Southbank

"Directors have the art of visualising the future nailed. Film can at an instant make the utopian world tangible and provide the provocations to get us thinking, but why has the popular future become such an unobtainable place?

Architects once aligned themselves with the future, fusing their visions to political ideals and ambitions for a bolder tomorrow, but where is our contemporary vision coming from? Who is imagining tomorrow and what will be the drivers? Does our apparent anxiety in the future point towards a confusing set of messages and a lack of political will to invest in it? Is our future suffering from a lack of faith and leadership in the present? Can we regain it?

WIRED magazine with RIBA Building Futures host a multi-disciplinary evening fusing film, architecture and debate to reveal our ambitions for tomorrow. Chaired by Ben Hammersley and including contributions from François Penz, Reader in Architecture and the Moving Image at the University of Cambridge and Eric Parry, founder and Co-Director of Eric Parry Architects with Sean Griffiths, Director and Co-Founder of Fashion Architecture Taste Ltd."

"Join the presenter of The 2008 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures Chris Bishop for a highly interactive exploration of the science of computation, and a look at the future of digital technology. Could we use DNA to do computation? Will quantum computers ever become a reality? With explosions, liquid nitrogen superconductors, and exotic chemical reactions: expect loud bangs!

We also hope to have a special preview from this year's lecturer Sue Hartley, showcasing some of the demonstrations that will make up the 2009 Christmas Lectures."

This event is suitable for ages 7 and over and children are welcome to sit with adults, unlike the regular Christmas Lectures.

Want to reach new audiences? Concerned your print, web and electronic outputs aren't as easy to read and understand as you wished and hoped?

In a climate where every sector is battling to communicate with and target a diverse and wide-ranging population, with equally diverse specific needs and requirements, it is crucial that the information you produce meets the needs of each individual, and not just the masses.

'Designing For All' is a highly successful training course with a strong track record, written and delivered to help you achieve exactly this. It enables you to both find out more about different user groups and audiences and their specific needs, and to get the chance to take part in practical workshops to test out what works - and what doesn't.

The course - led by Katie Grant of Raincharm, former publications manager for the Disability Rights Commission and one of the UK's leading specialists in this vital field - covers web, print and electronic document production including how to write and produce Easy Read documents.

Quotes from previous delegates:
"The course covered a wide range of subjects very well in a limited time"
"This is a very well constructed, structured and informative course"

Specifically, this course will help you:

• assess current design and content of information - please bring examples along of your current information for us to assess in our 'document clinic'
• follow an inclusive model to improve accessibility across your communications mix
• assess specific audience needs, identifying ways to communicate in an accessible way
• see how different formats/styles work for different audiences
• keep abreast of the latest developments in accessible formats and assistive technologies
• carry on learning, with an inclusive takeaway guide and checklist to designing and producing accessible information.

Nov 18, 2009: Ignite London at Ginglik

Speakers include:
Ben Hammersley, Editor at Wired Magazine
Nicola Smyth, Senior Research Manager at BBC
Craig Smith, Web Editor for O’Reilly
Full Members free / P.A.Y.G. Members & guests free / Doors open at 7pm / Talks start at 8pm
Ignite was started in Seattle in 2006 by Brady Forrest of O’Reilly Radar and Bre Pettis of Make. Since then hundreds of five minute talks have been given across the world. Besides Seattle, there are thriving Ignite communities in Portland, Sydney, NYC and a lot more.
The idea is simple: presenters are required to stick to a rigid format of 20 slides, each of which changes automatically after 15 seconds, ensuring that each presentation is exactly 5 minutes long. The format forces presenters to think long and hard about every slide.
Presentation topics are diverse, and range from technology, travel, personal hobbies and passions and the arts.

Nov 20, 2009: Telstar and information literacy at CILIP

Information literacy will be the theme of the first meeting of the new academic year’s programme for the CoFHE London and South East Circle (LASEC) which will take place at 3 pm on Friday 20 November at CILIP, 7 Ridgmount Street, London WC1E 7AE.

• The JISC funded TELSTAR project (in collaboration with RefWorks) is looking at how references are integrated into the Open University e-learning environment (both the Moodle VLE, and the Student ePortfolio environment), and how we can make it easy for students to use citations and references appropriately in their assessed work. Owen Stephens, the Project Manager, will talk about the work of the project and demonstrate the progress made in the project to date.

• Then there will be a sharing good practice session on information literacy. Do bring your presentations, handouts and other materials, and tell your colleagues what you do, how it works and what you’re planning to improve. It’s free to attend to anyone with an interest in the subject.

If you’d like to attend please let Stephen Wickens, the LASEC Secretary know so there will be enough (free) refreshments: Stephen.Wickens@westking.ac.uk Coming soon: news of an e-resources management session and our annual day school

Nov 27, 2009: The Sizzle Suite at Ginglik

The Shoe Strung are making their debut in West London’s premier beat bunker. Although only young, they have long since sold their collective souls to the Devil, who almost gave up waiting at the crossroads, as no lost souls had past for many moons. That is however, until these young fellas rocked up and asked him to re-tune their guitars in the darkness…....With a rich heritage of music flowing through their collective DNA, The Shoestrung sound collides Howlin’ Wolf, The Small Faces, Muddy Waters & The Stones (to name just a few!!) with their raw energy and youthful exuberance to devastating effect!!
Hosted by Count Sizzle, who will be spinning killer vintage 45's from sleazy old time jazz to early heavy funk and everything in between (and we do mean everything!). Plus Guest DJ's. www.myspace.com/countsizzle

Nov 27, 2009: The Cesarians, Graan, Alex Monk at The Half Moon (Herne Hill)

Kaparte Promotions present:

The Cesarians
The Cesarian, the most talked band in town will play an outstanding set for the exclusive club Nocturne Folks, in the decandent setting of the glourious Half Moon in Herne Hill, on Friday 27 November.
Featuring ex members of Penthouse, Monkey Island and Baadar Meinhoff, it's not since The Birthday Party crashed and burned in Berlin, that the twisted sounds of old style decadence has been pumped so intensely through distorted amplifiers. London scenesters looking for a scene free of recycled rock, have found expression in The Cesarians cabaret world.
Had rock and roll been born in 1930's urban Europe, and not 1930's rural America, it would have been like this; part Kurt Weil, part Jacques Brel, part Ernst Kirchner, part klezma. Looking like a band formed in the mind of George Grosz, The Cesarians capture the urban zeitgeist via the junk shop instruments of old Europe . In their hands, a clarinet, trombone, piano, and drums beaten in waltz time, make raw and raucous rock and roll. Over this beautiful chaos Charlie Finke preaches his own intense message.
"As far as alt.rock oompah bands go, this lot are in a class of their own." - David Sinclair, The Times Online
" It is classic, dirty rock and roll at it's best, a sound missing for at least twenty-five years we're damn happy it's back." - Bearded Magazine
www.myspace.com/thecesarians
http://thecesarians.com/

Graan
Graan formed spontaneously following a successful appearance under the Platform Five (Funf) at the Avantgarde festival in Schiphorst, Germany, in July 2008.
Graan make Avant-Enochian doom and science-fiction drone bringing heavy bass guitar frequencies into the electronic mix alongside gutteral utterances, mordant guitar riffs and dystopian spoken word. Graan is approximately half the members of Stëllä Märïs Drönë Örchësträ and one of Drift of Signifieds, creating soundscapes where new weird electronica meets deep-listening Lovecraftian Delerium.
"If Aleister Crowley, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe and John Dee formed a band then this would be the result. London's Graan will crush your spirit with deafening static, claustrophobic low end, blasphemous ranting and monomaniacal pursuit of The Riff." - Bang the Bore
www.graan.org.uk
www.myspace.com/graanulaar

Alex Monk
Alex Monk is a musician and producer based in London and is fond of experimentation and improvisation, combining acoustic and digitally processed elements. Subjecting the guitar and found sounds to a variety of analogue and digital processes, Monk's live improvised performances exhibit past, present and future sonic events. A creation of timeless artefacts akin to the apex of Post-Punk inventiveness, as well as today's ecclesiastical drone rock.

Dec 17, 2009: Still Fighting on the Dancefloor at Ginglik

A unique one off night devoted to the Mods & Rockers of this generation. With DJ’s and a band playing the varied sounds of the sixties. Rummage through vintage shops or raid your parent’s wardrobes, but be sure to arrive dressed up to the nines.
Count Sizzle (The Sizzle Suite/Killer Dillers) spins an eclectic mix of vintage rhythms & Roots Music from the late 1920's to the early 70's. Hot Jazz, Black Gospel, Swing, Rhythm 'n Blues, Rock 'n Roll, Soul, Ska, Latin, Funk, Reggae & a dash of Northern Soul all feature in his sets of rare 45's & 78's.

For Still Fighting On The Dance Floor, he promises a 50's & 60's tear-up of the mightiest proportions.

The Len Price 3
'Unfettered garage rock from the Medway Delta, The Len Price 3 promise a mix of Stooges rawness and Ramones-y pop suss. Freakbeat, mod, and traditional power pop song structures. Bare-bones guitar, bass and drums; classic British-freak-beat song hooks and vocal harmonies; songs that roll over you like a mono copy of The Who Sing My Generation. And all this while never forgetting that rock and roll is still about fun.'

Dec 2, 2009: Geeks, Gizmos & Gadgets 09 Christmas Show n’ Tell at BCS - The British Computer Society

There have been yet more great gadgets released in 2009. Do you own one? Have you created one of your own? Or perhaps in a eureka moment dreamt up a gadget of the future (future = 2015)?

For Christmas, once again we are turning our event over to you. If you are a gizmo-geek, we will give you 5 minutes to convince members of the BCS and invited judges (not to mention the elves) why your favourite gadget of 2009 should be at the top of their Christmas list. Else, if you are one of the bemused, come along and be part of the audience … and boo, hiss or cheer!

Judges

Spencer Kelly from BBC Click will be judging alongside Richard Banks, Interaction Designer at Microsoft Research, who will close with some thoughts on gadgets to watch out for in 2010 & beyond.

The best gadget and the best presenter will win a rather scrumptious prize (or at least a better one than last year)!

Rules for pitchers

There are some simple rules for pitchers:

- The gadget must be a tangible device or a service with a tangible element.

- The gadget has to be IT-related.

- The gadget can be home-made or a mod of a paid-for gadget. However, you can only talk about such a gadget if you are a lone inventor or in a startup of ~ 5 people.

- The gadget has to have been released/created in 2009 (roughly) or be a future prototype/design.

- You have to own the gadget, or if presenting a futuristic gadget, be able to assert your creative rights.

- If you cannot bring the gadget on the night you must bring a picture/video of you with it.

Following the event network with fellow gizmo-geeks, tech-enthusiasts and idea-evangelists plus half-hearted afficionados, over a mince pie, some turkey sandwiches and mulled wine!

FREE but registration (see bleow) is required.
