Jul 7, 2009: YDN Tuesday: Placemaker at Skills Matter

This is the latest in the series of free YDN Tuesday technical talks in London (on the first Tuesday of each month).

Location based services are a big thing right now. With everybody and their grandmother having GPS enabled handsets and services that find your location from your IP number or the wireless hotspot you use the web becomes much more personal and immediate than it was ever before. The issue is that there isn't a lot of content out on the web and new one being created that has quality geographical data in it. This makes it hard to match your location with relevant interesting pieces of information.

Yahoo Placemaker is a new service that fills this gap. You can feed it a text, a data feed or a web site URL and it returns the geographically relevant information in this text with hierarchical information, Latitude and Longitude and tells you where in the text it found this information.

In this session Christian Heilmann will explain Placemaker, show some implementations built with it and gives you step-by-step information on how you can use it using PHP or JavaScript.

Please register on Skills Matter's website using the link below

Mar 2, 2010: Emerging Communications (eComm) Spring 2010 at San Francisco Airport Marriott

Why eCommThe Emerging Communications Conference & Awards:

* Attracts executives and top influencer's from across the telecom, mobile and Internet space
* Launches real-world startups
* Explores business models and new partnership structures
* Gives stage time to cutting-edge academic projects
* Presents views from the incumbent telecom players
* Stirs required policy debates
* Promotes garage based hacks
* Brings out visionaries
* Provides a venue to meet and do business, as well as be inspired
* Showcases bleeding-edge technologies
* Provides a critical forum for all players across the full spectrum

Why Attend Fall 2009?

The mammoth sized telecom industry - including cellular - is in the process of being re-written. You either stand on the side to be written into the past or instead join with the growing community to write the future.

Opportunities to profit from the radical restructuring and in accelerating the development of how humanity connects, communicates and collaborates have never been so great.

Opportunity Doesn't Always Knock. Sometimes It Calls.

The Emerging Communications (eComm) Conference & Awards was created to promote and accelerate communications innovation.

Telecom, mobile and to a lesser extent, Internet based communications, had been innovation stagnant for far too long. Yet the opportunities for innovation had never been greater. Those opportunities are only going to grow as drastic changes further impact the multi-trillion dollar a year telecom industry. Changes include:

* Telecom is becoming software
* Today's model of the telephony and SMS cash-cows will significantly dry up long-term
* "Phones" are becoming general purpose always-on computers
* A march is underway to change how spectrum is allocated and utilised
* Applications innovation is being democratised
* The media industry is converging with personal communications
* Internet-style ecosystems are starting to pressurise the traditional value chain
* Search engines and computer manufactures are encroaching into the space
* App downloads; media content and even communication streams are increasingly routing-around operator's billing systems
* The telecom kingdom is fragmenting daily.

There is not a migratory way from where we are to the future; this means unprecedented opportunity for those ahead-of-the-curve.

The debut San Francisco Spring 2008 conference broke a lot of new ground and created a forum attracting 300 top influencer's and 80 speakers from 15 countries. San Francisco Spring 2009 built upon that foundation with world-class speakers and a 25% increase in attendees. Amsterdam Fall 2009 is the debut European event and promises to further cement the community.
Asia boasts the fastest growing social networking and social media market on the planet. There are also more mobile internet users, with the Asia Pacific region, than anywhere else in the world. It is no surprise that Six Degrees is moving the series to Signapore to learn from the leading social networking publishers, developers, brands and organisations who are currently operating in this exciting region.
The event will be supported by some of the largest global brands and organisations who are using social media to effectively excecute marketing and PR strategies. The event will also learn from regional heads of the popular social networking sites to provide insight on market conditions and learn how they adapted their service to expand to this region. The event will also debate and analyse current trends, market forces and examine how brands and organisations are exploiting this new media to market products and services.

Sep 15, 2009: Portland Java User Group at Oracle

This month's topic: TBD

----------

PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)

Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!

Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ).

Oct 29, 2009: Virtual Goods Summit 2009 at UCSF Mission Bay Conference Center

Virtual Goods Summit University - Thursday, October 29, 2009
Virtual Goods Summit - Friday, October 30, 2009
Westin Market Street
San Francisco, CA
http://www.vgsummit.com/2009

The market opportunity for virtual goods continues to expand as developers and publishers get a deeper understanding of how virtual goods work and how best to maximize the business opportunity around them. The 2009 edition of the virtual goods summit will bring together thought leaders in this space to talk about what's changed, what's working, and the key challenges facing the industry.

Virtual Goods Summit University
This year we'll be offering a half-day seminar designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the key fundamental drivers of virtual goods business models. Our group of experts will cover topics ranging from why virtual goods are effective to the ins and outs of managing a virtual economy. Whether you're new to the space or just looking for an opportunity to get additional insights and perspectives, we encourage you to join us for the day and learn from some of our industry's leading thinkers. Space is limited, so register now if you plan to attend.

Virtual Goods Summit
The 2009 version of the Virtual Goods Summit is on track to be a fantastic event. We're hard at work in securing a strong lineup of speakers who will come armed with data and perspective to share with all in attendance. If you're active in the virtual goods space, this is a must-attend event.

We'll be announcing more about this conference later in the year, but feel free to keep up to date with our plans by checking our website at http://www.vgsummit.com/2009. If you and/or your company are interested in sponsoring or speaking at the conference, please email Charles Hudson at charles@vgsummit.com.

Oct 21, 2009: Mobile Social Media Unconference at Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel

The Mobile Social Media Unconference is a gathering of strategists, community hosts, device manufacturers, service providers, and content developers to discuss the emerging opportunities and challenges that mobile communities present.

Several factors are driving the importance and relevance of this topic, most notably the fact that the number of mobile handsets in use globally dwarfs the number of personal computers. This fact, combined with the increasing sophistication of mobile devices, increasing speed of data flowing on mobile networks, the increasingly robust web experiences available via mobiles, and the explosion in interest around social networking begs the questions: what impact will mobile have on pc-bound online community experiences? And what are the unique opportunities for mobile-only experiences that transcend voice?

As we have found with our past events, the best source of information on all of these topics is other knowledgeable practitioners.

The Mobile Community Unconference is inspired by the emerging "open space" conference format. (For an excellent description, see this CNN Money article on a recent Unconferences.)

The Sheraton Palo Alto is located just across the street from Stanford, and in the heart of Silicon Valley. Lunch and snacks will be provided, and there will also be plenty of time for networking during the breaks.

An extensive Unconference FAQ has been posted here: http://www.forumonenetworks.com/msmu_faq

Oct 22, 2009: Web.Start 2009 at Hypo EXPO XXI

Web.Start is the first regional conference in southeast Europe catering to the authors of Web projects, aiming to help them realize or improve their projects and helping them reach the knowledge and contacts that will help hem position themselves on the market, fund their projects and achieve success.

Also, the conference works the other way around as well, giving the funds and investors a chance to scout the potentials of the local Web community by checking the existing and upcoming projects.

Thanks to the speakers and attendees, this conference will pose many questions but also provide many answers. Web.Start aims to mark a beginning of the formation of a new generation of successful Web projects in the region, as well as creating a new industry. Web.Start conference — the future has begun!

What are the topics of Web.Start?

Web.Start lasts for two days, which are divided into a Tech.Day and a Biz.Day.

The focus of Tech.Day is, as the name implies, various technology topics related to Web development. More specifically, this includes topics on server-side Web development, client-side Web development, mobile technologies and other related issues.

The Biz.Day focuses on business side of the Web — from more general e-business, marketing and managerial topics to especially issues related to starting a Web business, such as business planning, investments etc.

Besides the main presentatios and keynotes, Web.Start also hosts brief, 10-minutes presentations from interesting Web startups from the region, and there are also separate rooms available for more private ad-hoc meetings.

Who will find Web.Start interesting?

This conference primarily caters to companies and individuals that participate — or intend to participate — in production or funding of Web projects in the region, regardless of their local or global market focus.

Besides being a place where both sides will get relevant first-hand information this conference will be a place for networking and contacts, both for entrepreneurs and investors.

Who will participate at Web.Start?

The official program includes experts from various fields: developers, managers, entrepreneurs, designers, advisors, financiers etc. Web.Start aims to offer something interesting for everyone, while staying firmly focused to starting, funding and managing the Web startup projects. You may find the list of speakers and topics at the official Web site of the conference.

What do we expect of Web.Start?

Above all, we wish to raise the awareness of the business and technical possibilities in the area of Web startups, as well as help Web entrepreneurs to present their products to a wide audience, as well as potential partners and entrepreneurs.

We hope that Web.Start will make possible a flow of knowledge and information as well as networking between Web entrepreneurs and investors, and ultimately that this conference will lead to some new projects and success stories in Croatia and the region.

Oct 21, 2009: Pop!Tech 2009: America Reimagined at Camden Opera House

Held in a beautifully restored, 19th-century opera house, this three-day summit explores major trends shaping our future, the social impact of new technologies, and new approaches to addressing the world’s most significant challenges.

A first visit to Pop!Tech is often surprising. Unlike traditional conferences, here you’ll find an eclectic network of industry leaders, scientists, technologies, social change agents, artists, educators, the press, bloggers, explorers and one-of-a-kind thought-leaders from a huge variety of fields and number of different places – bound together by an intense curiosity about the forces, challenges and opportunities shaping our future. Many are personally involved in cutting-edge work in these fields – we could easily program a second (and third) conference from the people who attend. This remarkable network is amplified by a similarly eclectic group who participate ‘live’ on the Internet from around the world.

The vibe (and the dress code) is informal and relaxed, and the Pop!Tech social network is “flat” – here you will find a senior corporate leader speaking intently with a solar energy pioneer; an African blogger deep in conversation with a polar explorer.

The content of a Pop!Tech conference is as diverse as the network itself – presentations range from the nature of disruptive innovation to the economics of human happiness; from the future of deep space exploration to new approaches to environmental stewardship. In the words of one participant, Pop!Tech provides powerful ‘optics on the future’.

The breathtaking content, beautiful setting, intimate scale, and informal tone make Pop!Tech an experience like no other. At the end, you’ll leave with dozens of new ideas, a better sense of where the world is headed, a new network of relationships and a lasting inspiration to create a better world.

Jul 24, 2009: Geeks In The Peaks at Peak District

UPDATE 03/07/09: Rescheduling for a date in the future for various logistical reasons. Not updating the date on this entry until that's firmed up, but will aim to give about 6 weeks notice. Can't guarantee avoiding clashes with other stuff, but if you have preferences of dates to do or not do, comment below and will try to factor in. Cheers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A low-tech gathering of technology, mapping, outdoor and other assorted geeks in the fabulous Peak District.

There may be some guest talks, but this is really about the social. The emphasis is enjoying the Great Outdoors, getting natural UV rather than the kind generated from your computer monitor, with plenty of group activities including (but not limited to) kite-flying, climbing, bouldering, walking, ballooning, mountain biking and trail cycling, as well as mapping and geo-caching.

Full details of location to be confirmed. Camping is likely, but we are also looking at bunker and hostel accommodation for the less hardy. There will likely be a cost involved, basically to cover your accommodation and food expenses. More information to follow.

In the meantime, register your interest here.

Jul 4, 2009: Open Tech 2009 at Central London

Open Tech 2009 is an informal, low cost, one-day conference on slightly different approaches to technology, democracy and community.

Back for 2009, OpenTech promises a day of thoughtful talks and conversations with friends. One of the strands we'd like to see running through the day is "working on stuff that matters", whatever you work on.

This event's predecessors, in 2008 and 2005 were low cost, one-day conferences about technologies that anyone can have a go at, from "Open Source"-style ways of working to repurposing everyday electronics hardware. Before that was NotCon 2004, an informal, low-cost, one-day conference on things that technologies were perhaps not intended to do.

Oct 5, 2009: KMIS-International Conference on Knowledge Management and Information Sharing at Madeira,Portugal

SCOPE

Knowledge Management (KM) is a discipline concerned with the analysis and technical support of practices used in an organization to identify, create, represent, distribute and enable the adoption and leveraging of good practices embedded in collaborative settings and, in particular, in organizational processes. Effective knowledge management is an increasingly important source of competitive advantage, and a key to the success of contemporary organizations, bolstering the collective expertise of its employees and partners.
There are several perspectives on KM, but all share the same core components, namely: People, Processes and Technology. Some take a techno-centric focus, in order to enhance knowledge integration and creation; some take an organizational focus, in order to optimize organization design and workflows; some take an ecological focus, where the important aspects are related to people interaction, knowledge and environmental factors as a complex adaptive system similar to a natural ecosystem.
Information Sharing (IS) is a term used for a long time in the information technology (IT) lexicon, related to data exchange, communication protocols and technological infrastructures. Although standardization is indeed an essential element for sharing information, IS effectiveness requires going beyond the syntactic nature of IT and delve into the human functions involved in the semantic, pragmatic and social levels of organizational semiotics.
The two areas are intertwined as information sharing is the foundation for knowledge management. KMIS aims at becoming a major meeting point for researchers and practitioners interested in the study and application of all perspectives of Knowledge Management and Information Sharing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT THIS SEMINAR:
Business metrics do a great job summarizing the past. But if you want to predict how customers will respond in the future, there is one place to turn--predictive analytics. By learning from your abundant historical data, predictive analytics provides the marketer something beyond standard business reports and sales forecasts: actionable predictions for each customer. These predictions encompass all channels, both online and off, foreseeing which customers will buy, click, respond, convert or cancel. If you predict it, you own it.

The customer predictions generated by predictive analytics deliver more relevant content to each customer, improving response rates, click rates, buying behavior, retention and overall profit. For online applications such as e-marketing and customer care recommendations, predictive analytics acts in real-time, dynamically selecting the ad, web content or cross-sell product each visitor is most likely to click on or respond to, according to that visitor's profile. This is AB selection, rather than just AB testing.

Predictive Analytics for Business, Marketing and Web is a concentrated training program that includes interactive breakout sessions and a brief hands-on exercise. In two days we cover:

• The techniques, tips and pointers you need in order to run a successful predictive analytics and data mining initiative
• How to strategically position and tactically deploy predictive analytics and data mining at your company
• How to bridge the prevalent gap between technical understanding and practical use
• How a predictive model works, how it's created and how much revenue it generates
• Several detailed case studies that demonstrate predictive analytics in action and make the concepts concrete

• NEW TOPIC: Five Ways to Lower Costs with Predictive Analytics

No background in statistics or modeling is required. The only specific knowledge assumed for this training program is moderate experience with Microsoft Excel or equivalent.

Jul 21, 2009: TEDGlobal 2009: The Substance Of Things Not Seen at Oxford Playhouse

"Four years after the first gathering, TEDGlobal returns to Oxford for a now-annual event. Join us next summer for four days of inspired thinking that goes beyond the obvious, delivering vital insight into the hidden forces shaping our future.

About the program: When we look around us, there are things we can observe: Buildings. People. Nature. And then there are things that run unseen through our lives. These hidden forces -- social conventions, biological links, cultural frameworks, coded meanings, complex processes, creative impulses, scientific speculations, software, networks -- are the connective tissue that binds societies together and the engines that propel organizations forward. When illuminated, they offer vital insights into our relationships with one another and our world.

The TEDGlobal program is designed to explore and make visible the substance of things not seen."

Jul 24, 2009: BlogHer '09 at Chicago Sheraton Hotel and Towers

Building on the momentum of four consecutive sold-out annual conferences, BlogHer '09 will bring bloggers from every corner of the blogosphere together for hands-on learning, rich discussions, opportunities to meet with the brands that support them and plentiful networking opportunities. BlogHer ’09 will take place on July 24-25, bringing over one thousand attendees together to celebrate 2009’s theme: “In Real Life.”

One of the number one reasons we all attend BlogHer every year, whether coming for the first time or as an old-timer, is to meet our online community "in real life". So after five years we think it's a great time to celebrate the fact that our blogging, whether personal, professional or political, has brought us real work, real friends, real satisfaction and is most definitely a significant part of our real life!

BlogHer '09 will be at the The Chicago Sheraton and Towers from July 24-25, 2009, immediately following our third annual BlogHer Business Conference on Thursday July 23rd.
