Nov 24, 2009: FlashBrighton: Planning Meeting at The Werks

It was a cold night in Preston Park, but nothing would dampen the spirits of the multitude that had travelled to be there. Anticipation was high as the cry of 'LEE DE LISLE, LEE DE LISLE' ran through the crowd. Backstage Vice President-elect Joe Summers nudged her running mate in the back, whispering 'Come on Seb, get out there and give them what they want.' Straighting his tie in the mirror, Sebastian smiled back at Joe's reflection, turned, and advanced onto the platform.

As the President-elect emerged into the spotlights, the noise level around the park rose until it felt like the very sky was about to crack. In a gesture of well rehearsed humility, Sebastian rode the wave, smiling, waving left and right, for a full five minutes. Only when the volume began to drop, did he approach the mike to address the adoring throng.

'My fellow FlashBrightonians, I am truly humbled by your warm reception, and the backing you have given this group. This is your victory.' The park exploded once more. Palms down, chin up, Sebastian feigned a plea for silence. A hush slowly descended.

'We have already achieved much. These past five years we have shown the greatest speakers, presented the most fascinating topics, and hosted the finest Big Screen Bonanzas. We achieved this together, and we take the greatest pride in that achievement. But our work is not done. Tonight marks a key turning point. For the first time in history weeks of underinvestment have left our calendar empty, and we stand on the brink of the greatest crisis in Big Screen Bonanza history. If we are to remain strong we cannot allow these to divisions to proliferate. My friends, the road ahead is hard. I can do much, but no one man can triumph alone. Therefore I stand before you tonight to humbly request your help in this great task.'

'Next Tuesday evening, at 7PM, I call upon you to attend our FlashBrighton Planning Meeting at The Werks in Hove, to help fill the gaps in the schedule and discuss the Big Screen Bonanza planned for December. Can we do it? I think you know the answer. Thank you, God bless you, and God bless the United Group of FlashBrighton.'

Seb stood away from the microphone and waved. The crowd erupted in celebration, as Jenny Lee-Delisle and Joe Summers emerged waving on the platform behind him.

Dec 2, 2009: £5 App Meet at Hectors House

A meet-up for programmers, web developers and designers to discuss and showcase their "£5 apps" - lightweight software created by one or two people who take a simple idea and run with it.

The discussion will range from technical (what tools/languages were used during development) to business (building communities, spreading the word, costs and rewards).

This years Christmas special £5app will be held at Hector's House and has a music theme (much like the gaming theme of last year's Christmas special (http://fivepoundapp.com/meetup/14/) ).

We've got quite a busy line-up, so we expect everything to run for a bit longer than usual:

* Seb Lee-Delisle (http://sebleedelisle.com/) – "My life as a wannabe rock star at the birth of the internet music boom"
* Toby Cole (http://www.55th.co.uk/) – "Zero to Theremin in 20 days" – How BuildBrighton built a feature rich, ultrasonic, laser etched MIDI controller in under three weeks
* Tom Hume (http://tomhume.org/) – "You're all an orchestra, get over it" – Bluetooth devices will interact with the audience to create changing ambient music, created by Future Platforms for a Hack Day
* lastminute.com labs (http://www.lastminute.com/site/labs) present Bottle-Rock-It, a music game for n iPhones where (with any luck) n > 3.
* Jim Purbrick (http://jimpurbrick.com/) – A short talk on the Mrmr/LiveAPI guitar mounted iPhone Ableton live interface by the head of Second Life Europe (and later a demo with 100Robots)
* 100Robots (http://www.myspace.com/onehundredrobots) – Jim and Max Williams (http://webcrisps.wordpress.com/) play live and loud for us

Seb has the main talk:

"Before Seb Lee-Delisle was peddling his digital creations, he had an entirely different life. He spent most of his 20s setting up Solar Records and promoting his band Stargirl (later Laine). Investing over £50,000 of their own money, they released their own CDs, made it onto the radio and TV, played in front of 30,000 people, recorded at George Martin’s Air Studios and had full page spreads in the nationals."

"They were at the forefront internet music boom of the late 90s. The future was looking rosy for this group of dynamic 20-somethings. So come and find out what it was like, how the hell they got the £50K, and why their plans didn’t quite reach fruition…"

Beer – several of us who are doing well this year will put up some bar-money (Alan of SensibleDevelopment (http://www.sensibledevelopment.com/) and Ian's ProCasts (http://procasts.co.uk/) so far, several more to come, get in contact if you want to share the love). We may also get mulled wine if we're lucky.

Food – maybe nibbles. Hopefully either cake or cookies too.

Nov 23, 2009: National Freelancers Day at The Eagle

The Professional Contractors Group (PCG) have nominated 23rd November as
National Freelancers Day and there will be events happening all over the
country to support and celebrate freelancers and contractors.

Crunch.co.uk/Freelance Advisor, Contractor Mortgages Made Easy and the
Farm are getting together to help the PCG put on the Brighton event. As
Brighton and Hove have the highest per capita number of freelancers in
the country, our night will of course be the best ;-)

It'll start at 7.30pm on Monday 23rd November in the Eagle pub. There
will be a few talks, a long networking session with plenty of beer and
lots of interesting people to meet. This is going out to PCG members as
well as our normal lists so there should be a load of new people to meet
on the night who don't usually come out to Brighton's new media groups.

If you're a freelancer, contractor, or interested in becoming one,
please come along. It'll be a great night.

The event will consist beer and discussion about:

* The Future of Freelancing - how is business changing and what does business need from people?
* Are we doing enough to pave the way for future trends?
* Is there anything else politicians, business leaders or freelancers should be doing?
* What is Freelancing, why is it different from employment? Why is it necessary?
* The Personal Brand: Is experience the currency of the future?
* Why Freelancing is necessary (personally and for the economy)
* How do expectations differ from reality?
* How has recession impacted upon the marketplace for freelancers?
* Delivering Productivity and Innovation. Absorbing risk.
* The role of technology: What do you feel has been the biggest fundamental technological impact on the freelance sector?
* What core message should PCG be campaigning on to support freelancing?
* What do you see as the fundamental constraints on the Freelance Sector? How could these be overcome?

* Then off to the bar!

Mar 2, 2010: Low Tide Sunset Bike Ride at Brighton Marina

Fun cycle dash over the exposed sand flats during one of the lowest tides of the year. The ride usually goes along the beach from the west wall of Brighton Marina to the King Alfred Centre and beyond (or vice versa), or as far as you and your bike can make it.

Time and tide wait for no-one, so if you can't make it to the start, join the ride en route. The ride sets off 30 minutes after meeting, so as to catch the lowest tide and the sunrise. If starting from the Marina, the ride will probably pass under Brighton Pier another 30 minutes after that, if you'd like to meet there.

Following August 2007's Low Tide Naked Critical Mash-Up bike ride, the event is clothing-optional, and riders often go for a skinny-dip in the sea at the end of the ride.

For evening rides, participants can adjourn for drinks afterwards at The Neptune pub.

Bring bikes, waterproofs, warm clothes, towels and lights. Remember to thoroughly wash the salt and sand off your bike afterwards. If you're worried about using your own bike, pick a scrap one up from a skip.

Example tide and sun times from 22 August 2009:

12:58 am BST High tide 7.01 Meters
5:58 am BST Sunrise
7:21 am BST Low tide 0.43 Meters
1:23 pm BST High tide 7.12 Meters
7:42 pm BST Low tide 0.56 Meters
8:05 pm BST Sunset

Previous rides have taken place on:

21 September 2005
18 October 2005

2 March 2006
10 September 2006
