Jul 18, 2009: Big Geek Day Out: Bletchley Park at Bletchley Park

The next Big Geek Day Out is being held on Saturday 18th July 2009 from 10:30am at Bletchley Park, the home of high-level British Intelligence during World War II.

Tickets cost £10.00 on the door, or £8.50 online (and let you go back as often as you want for a year).

Bletchley Park is surprisingly easily accessible by rail from London, Bedford and Birmingham, so there should be no excuses for anyone not being able to get there.

What is a Big Geek Day Out?

Big Geek Days Out are "unEvents" - one person organises a time and place for people to meet and that's it. Everything else is done by the people coming to the event.

The idea is that there are plenty of places that we'd like to go to, but for whatever reason never get round to visiting. By someone saying "we're going there on this date" it becomes much more likely that you'll actually get off your bum and visit.

So, that's what happens. The organiser says where and when to meet, and you (as someone who's attending) deal with getting there and buying any tickets needed to get into the place we're visiting. When we went to Alton Towers last year, people organised car shares to get themselves there and sourced buy-one-get-one-free tickets for each other.

Of course, whilst the event isn't classically organised it's still good to know who's going to be coming. If you are going to come along, please add yourself

Jul 26, 2009: Banksy London Locations Walk at various locations (East London)

Do you fancy wandering the streets of the east end London (Hoxton & Shoreditch) looking for graffiti (ones that still exist), especially that from Banksy ?

How did this come about?
I love Banksy. I like photography. I don't mind walking.
That added to the purchase of Martin Bull's book sometime last year got me thinking about arranging a meetup along these lines.

The plan?
- Pray for good weather!
- Meet at a cafe (TBD) around 11am or so in the East End.
- Depending on how many we get we can split up and take in a route based on the book and have possibly common pit stops along the way (think pubs) and definitely a common end stop that we can all meet at.

About the book?
A Collection of Graffiti Locations & Photographs in London,
mainly of Banksy's street work.
See: http://bit.ly/16x7Yh

Also including mentions of Eine, Faile, El Chivo, Arofish, Space Invader, Blek Le Rat, D*face, and Shepard Fairey / Obey.

*** If you want to help plan this meetup, please get in touch ***

Jul 24, 2009: Geeks In The Peaks at Peak District

UPDATE 03/07/09: Rescheduling for a date in the future for various logistical reasons. Not updating the date on this entry until that's firmed up, but will aim to give about 6 weeks notice. Can't guarantee avoiding clashes with other stuff, but if you have preferences of dates to do or not do, comment below and will try to factor in. Cheers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A low-tech gathering of technology, mapping, outdoor and other assorted geeks in the fabulous Peak District.

There may be some guest talks, but this is really about the social. The emphasis is enjoying the Great Outdoors, getting natural UV rather than the kind generated from your computer monitor, with plenty of group activities including (but not limited to) kite-flying, climbing, bouldering, walking, ballooning, mountain biking and trail cycling, as well as mapping and geo-caching.

Full details of location to be confirmed. Camping is likely, but we are also looking at bunker and hostel accommodation for the less hardy. There will likely be a cost involved, basically to cover your accommodation and food expenses. More information to follow.

In the meantime, register your interest here.
