Children and families of all ages are invited to embark on a journey through the park, encountering animals that can be found in Yosemite, learning the tricks to fly fishing, and trying their luck on horizontal and vertical climbing walls that simulate the granite cliff of El Capitan that dangles over Yosemite’s valley.
In addition to these activities and others, the museum’s artist-in-residence, birch bark artist David Moses Bridges (Passamaquoddy) will give a demonstration and unveil the wigwam he has been constructing over the course of the month. Bridges will also launch a birch bark canoe into the Downtown Canal! Also on hand: Radio Disney, plus local outfitters and environmental groups that will help families and prepare for their own trips into the great outdoors.
Also part of the day’s festivities is Yo-Yosemite, a unique opportunity to learn about Yosemite National Park. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., guests can learn the art of yo-yoing from teacher Don Fisher, who taught outdoor recreation in Yosemite. The fee for this workshop is $10 per person and $20 for an adult and youth (5-years old or older) pair. The fee includes museum admission, a yo-yo and instruction. Outdoor Adventure Day represents one of the last opportunities to see the museum’s stunning exhibition Yosemite: Art of an American Icon, which closes on Sunday, August 3.
Outdoor Adventure Day is free with paid admission. (See additional fee for Yo-Yosemite.) A special Girl/Boy Scout rate is offered for this day: $6 for adults and $3 for kids.
The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art seeks to inspire an appreciation and understanding of the art, history and cultures of the American West and the indigenous peoples of North America. Switzerland County (IN) Tourism is seeking vendors for their annual Sleepy Hollow Arts and Crafts Fair. The event will be held Sat. Oct. 4 from 9am-4pm in downtown Vevay.

Along with arts and crafts, the event features a car show, apple pie baking contest, pumpkin decorating contest, make your own scarecrow, artist demonstrations, delicious food and more.

Free vendor booth space is available around the historic courthouse square, but is limited and obtainable only by preregistering. Tourism will accommodate booth sizes per individual vendors needs.

No preregistration is required for the car and tractor show. Entries must arrive at Paul Ogle Riverfront Park between 8am-12pm. Judging will take place from noon until 3pm.

Entries in the apple pie baking contest must be delivered to the Switzerland County Visitors Center between 10-11:30am.

Appalachian musical group Sunset Dawn will perform at the Historic Hoosier Theater during the Aug. 9 Shows of Second Saturday. Presented by Vevay Main Street, the event will begin at 7 p.m. at the theater located on Ferry Street in downtown Vevay.

Four women—Fran Booth, Nancy Cook, Madgelee Moore and Sherry Cook Stanforth—make up the troupe that grew up singing and playing music in the Appalachian tradition. Along with singing, the group is accomplished in many instruments including the mountain lap dulcimer, guitar, banjimer, autoharp, tin whistle, flute and harmonica.

In their lyrics are powerful stories of work, play, love, loss, battle, land and family. Sharing these tunes with others, Sunset Dawn hopes “to keep them—and their proud history—from fading away.”

The group also finds great inspiration within their audience. All are invited to join in with their music while they’re on the stage, and to mingle with them afterwards. They enjoy talking about songs, instruments and the Appalachian culture.

Sunset Dawn has performed all over the Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina, Tennessee regions at festivals, fairs, schools and special events. They also teach workshops that feature ensemble-style playing on the mountain lap dulcimer and tin whistle. They have two CDs including From One Time to Another and their latest, Stone Soup.

Madison County residents are invited to attend an original, interactive murder mystery that will delight and entertain. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and an elegant dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. by Simple Decadence Catering. The mystery show will begin after dinner.

This is a mystery lover’s dream! Clues are included in the scripted action, and during unscripted breaks. During the breaks, the actors mingle in character with the audience, and allow the guests to ask questions to get additional clues. The audience will love interacting with the characters while trying to figure out “whodunit.”

Tickets are $25 each and include dinner, the show, tax and gratuity. A cash bar is available for virgin drinks only. The event is for adults aged 18 and older.

While participating in a bicycle ride to honor fallen police officers, Lieutenant Gary Dudley and retired Lake County Sheriff's Department Chief of Police Gary Martin were killed when a box truck struck the riders' support vehicle shoving the support vehicle into the group of cyclists. Lieutenant Dudley and Chief Martin died at the scene of the crash on State Road 63 in Vermillion County. A third cyclist, retired Indianapolis Police Officer Spencer Moore was injured in the crash.
WHAT: “GARY’S RIDE” is a recreational bicycle ride to honor Indiana State
Police Lt. Gary Dudley. All proceeds from the ride benefit The Gary
Dudley Memorial Scholarship Foundation, which provides college
Grants to the children of Police Officers killed in the Line of Duty in
Indiana.
WHEN: Saturday, August 09, 2008. Registration opens at 7:00am
WHERE: Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, IN
WHO: Bicyclists of all ages and experience levels are welcome. Routes range
from a “Family Fun Ride” up to a Century (100 miles). Six levels are
available. You can ride as little or as much as you want.
