These days, the demands of leadership are more complex than ever. More and more, organisations are seeking ways to develop leaders with not only competence, but Character as well. Companies need leaders who will not just be decisive, but will make the right decisions. And organisations need managers who can thrive in today's "do more with less" world. What's more, as the current generation of executives retires, experts predict a serious shortfall in managers qualified to replace those leaders.

Conflict resolution
Prioritisation
Performance management
Accountability and trust
Execution
Collaboration
Team and employee development
Participants will learn how to:

Increase resourcefulness and initiative
Define the contribution they want to make in their role as managers
Manage performance through a balance of accountability and trust
Give constructive feedback
Improve team decision-making skills by embracing - even encouraging - diverse viewpoints

Dec 16, 2009: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People at FranklinCovey UK - London

No company can succeed until individuals within it succeed. No group can achieve its objectives until its people achieve theirs.

That's what FranklinCovey's 7 Habits programme is about making people effective so that they, in turn, can make their organisations effective.

Nothing less can ensure survival and prosperity in these tumultuous times. The whirlwind of technological advances; the changing tide of global, national, and local markets; the storms of mergers, downsizing, and structural changes--these are just some of the proliferating challenges that organisations face today.

Quick-fix solutions do not work in this environment. Piecemeal improvements are futile. Only those organisations that have made the effort to build a solid foundation of highly effective people will move surely and safely toward their destinations.

The principles taught in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People--the national best seller by Dr. Stephen R. Covey, founder and chairman of FranklinCovey Co., are brought to life in this powerful programme. It has helped transform thousands of organisations throughout the world by transforming the people they depend on.

Aug 23, 2010: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People at FranklinCovey UK - London

This is a talk about the the Naked Objects methodology given by Dan Haywood who also has a book out on the subject. Naked Objects is a framework to help you develop the domain layer using the principles of domain-driven design. Exposing the domain objects in this way rapidly develops the ubiquitous language, while supporting a model-driven design. Come along and join in a discussion on how Naked Objects supports DDD.

Nov 14, 2009: Gilbert Shelton Signing at Gosh! Comics London at Gosh! Comics

The latest signing to mark in your diary none other than counter-culture legend and all-round Gosh! Favourite, Gilbert Shelton. He’s no stranger to the hallowed Gosh! basement but hasn’t been here in well over a year. In that time we’ve seen hundreds of copies of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Omnibus fly off the shelf and the brand new Fat Freddy’s Cat Omnibus promises to do much the same thing.

Fat Freddy’s Cat originally began as a footnote to the now iconic Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers misadventures but very quickly became enormously popular in his own right. Bringing feline logic to the tie-dyed, drug-flushin’ world of the Freak Brothers, the Cat can be seen sleeping on Fat Freddy’s head, battling endless armies of roaches, travelling to Mexico, saving the world from an alien invasion and (of course) the Hee Hee Hee drug.

“Gilbert Shelton is as near as comics have come to producing a natural comedic genius of the same stature as a Chaplin or a Tati. With the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers he has created a hilarious and unlikely sibling trio as timeless in their appeal as the Marx Brothers. He is truly one of the greatest and most sublimely funny talents that the comic medium has to offer.”
– Alan Moore

If you can’t make it in for the signing on Saturday the 14th of November 3pm – 5pm, don’t get burned! Let us know and we’ll score you a signed copy. Keed spills!

Nov 11, 2009: Architect Mas Yendo Lecture at Bartlett School of Architecture

Liam Young from Tomorrows Thoughts Today is curating an exhibition and lecture on the work by the maverick ‘architect’ Mas Yendo. http://masyendo.org/

Salvaged from the wreckage, Mas’ artefacts are evidence of a near future where labyrinthine, steel filaments mesh together like roots of an overgrown tree, mechanical elements bulge from decrepit structures, naked pipes wrap around each other in bondage. Loose wires, rusted steel panels, chipped paint, layered walls and the assimilation of organic entity and machine capture the essence of this city. Born in 1957 in Tokyo, Japan, his experimental works have been compiled in his monograph Ironic Diversions, published by Springer/Wien through Lebbeus Woods’ Research Institute of Experimental Architecture. He currently lives and works in New York City.

The exhibition titled E-X PROSTHESIS will be a collection of his extraordinary objects made from hacked military model kits and accompanying graphite drawings. Mas will give a lecture at 6.30 in the UCL Darwin lecture thearte before opening the exhibition in the Bartlett School of Architecture Lobby Gallery.

Nov 17, 2009: RIBA Building Futures 'This House Believes We Have Lost Sight of the Future' at BFI Southbank

"Directors have the art of visualising the future nailed. Film can at an instant make the utopian world tangible and provide the provocations to get us thinking, but why has the popular future become such an unobtainable place?

Architects once aligned themselves with the future, fusing their visions to political ideals and ambitions for a bolder tomorrow, but where is our contemporary vision coming from? Who is imagining tomorrow and what will be the drivers? Does our apparent anxiety in the future point towards a confusing set of messages and a lack of political will to invest in it? Is our future suffering from a lack of faith and leadership in the present? Can we regain it?

WIRED magazine with RIBA Building Futures host a multi-disciplinary evening fusing film, architecture and debate to reveal our ambitions for tomorrow. Chaired by Ben Hammersley and including contributions from François Penz, Reader in Architecture and the Moving Image at the University of Cambridge and Eric Parry, founder and Co-Director of Eric Parry Architects with Sean Griffiths, Director and Co-Founder of Fashion Architecture Taste Ltd."

Dec 4, 2009: Bruce Schneier - The Future of Privacy: Rethinking Security Trade-offs at St Albans Centre

Event with Bruce Schneier - 'The Future of Privacy: Rethinking Security Trade-offs'

We live in a unique time in our technological history. The cameras are ubiquitous, but we can still see them. ID checks are everywhere, but we still know they're going on. Computers inherently generate personal data, and everyone leaves an audit trail everywhere they go.

Bruce Schneier, internationally-renowned cryptographer, technologist and author, will share his vision of current and future technologies' effects on privacy. Schneier rejects the traditional "security vs. privacy" dichotomy in favor of a more subtle and realistic one.

Data is the pollution problem of the information age and we need to start thinking about how to deal with it.

When? Doors open at 1830, Friday 4 December 2009

Jim Killock, Executive Director of Open Rights Group, will chair the audience Q&A. Drinks will be available at the venue before and after the talk.

An audio and video recording will be made available after the event.

Dec 8, 2009: Designing for all: an inclusive approach to web, print and electronic publishing at Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)

Want to reach new audiences? Concerned your print, web and electronic outputs aren't as easy to read and understand as you wished and hoped?

In a climate where every sector is battling to communicate with and target a diverse and wide-ranging population, with equally diverse specific needs and requirements, it is crucial that the information you produce meets the needs of each individual, and not just the masses.

'Designing For All' is a highly successful training course with a strong track record, written and delivered to help you achieve exactly this. It enables you to both find out more about different user groups and audiences and their specific needs, and to get the chance to take part in practical workshops to test out what works - and what doesn't.

The course - led by Katie Grant of Raincharm, former publications manager for the Disability Rights Commission and one of the UK's leading specialists in this vital field - covers web, print and electronic document production including how to write and produce Easy Read documents.

Quotes from previous delegates:
"The course covered a wide range of subjects very well in a limited time"
"This is a very well constructed, structured and informative course"

Specifically, this course will help you:

• assess current design and content of information - please bring examples along of your current information for us to assess in our 'document clinic'
• follow an inclusive model to improve accessibility across your communications mix
