For the National Make a Difference Day, Saturday, Oct. 25th, The Friendship Volunteer Center and the Sarasota Trolley are offering rides to the North County Library in Newtown Estates from 9-1pm for early voting. This is a nonpartisan event, meant to offer an opportunity to those without transportation or ability to get to the polls a ride to an early voting site. Pick-up stops are still being planned, however Robert L. Taylor Community Center will be one of the stops. We are also looking for other non-profits to participate and use their vehicles to transport voters on this day of national service. We are looking for trolley riders to assist with helping participants on and off the trolley and determining that everyone has the proper identification with them to vote. We also need help at the pick-up points, at the library and neighbors helping neighbors to drive them to the polls on this day.

For the past 12 weeks, hundreds of volunteers have worked tirelessly to register voters and identify Barack Obama supporters all over Sarasota. Voter registration closed yesterday, and now it's time to learn how we'll Get Out the Vote!

Anyone interested in helping to put Barack Obama in the White House must attend this meeting. We need you to learn the Big Picture of the Campaign's strategy for the next 24 days. It's really exciting, and WE NEED YOU.

Come to the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 12:30 p.m. to learn how to change Sarasota and win Florida for Barack Obama.

At the strategy session, we'll spend about 45 minutes discussing our plan, then break up into teams to sign up for shifts. Then each team will complete a mass canvass in their team turf, and for those who can't canvass we'll hold a big phone bank at Obama Headquarters down the street.

The campaign in Sarasota has been going well, thanks to the dedication of so many volunteers. That work will be for nothing, though, if we don't dedicate ourselves 100% for less than one month until Election Day.

The Wellness Community’s Celebration of Hope Award Dinner Will Coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month

(SARASOTA, FL) October 2nd 2008- The Wellness Community of Southwest Florida will hold its 8th Annual Celebration of Hope dinner and presentation of the Stephen H. Goldman, M.D., Keystone Award, on October 15th, 2008 at 6:00 p.m., at Michael’s on East. in Sarasota, Florida.

Dr. Joe and Patti Corcoran will serve as co-chairs; Charles and Deb Knowles are honorary chairs and ABC 7’s Heidi Godman will serve as mistress of ceremonies.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the ceremony will include a special tribute to past Goldman Award recipient Carol Lystad – a Wellness Community volunteer, advocate and participant -- who lost her fight against breast cancer earlier this year.

The event also honors the 2008 recipients of the Stephen H. Goldman, M.D., Keystone Award, who have demonstrated the same exceptional commitment, compassion and dedication to fighting cancer and raising awareness as did the late Dr. Stephen H. Goldman. This year’s recipients; one from within and one from outside the medical community, are Russell Novak, M.D. a Surgical Oncologist with Sarasota Surgical Specialists and Dr. Larry Thompson, President of Ringling College of Art and Design. Both have been nominated by the public and selected by The Wellness Community’s Award Selection Committee, which is comprised of members of the medical and non-profit community.

In addition to our Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama, and our Congressional Candidate, Christine Jennings, we have 21 Democratic Candidates running in local Sarasota County races. Your participation in helping this winning field get elected is a critically important way to build our Democratic base right here in Sarasota for now and for the future. We have two volunteer opportunities 1. At Democratic Headquarters 2. In your precinct. DEMOCRATIC HEADQUARTERS 1. Skills Needed • Computer Literacy • Friendly Phone Manner • Good with People • Adminstrative Capabilities 2. Tasks • Data Entry • Telephone Calls to Voters • Reception/Front Desk • Greeters • Supervision • Coordinating and/or leading special projects Headquarters Shifts: 10 – 1 pm and 1– 4 pm Mon – Fri; 10 – 1 pm Sat and Mon and Thurs Evenings 5:30 – 8 pm.
