SAVE THE DATE! Plan to join us for a second program on “The Future of Richmond’s Past” on Tuesday, November 10, 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Virginia Union University. Progress reports will be made on work underway since the inaugural meeting on September 29.
The discussion begun on September 29 provided an excellent overview of our city’s historical resources and opportunities for enhancing the experiences of our citizens and visitors throughout the coming years. During 2011-2015 our nation will commemorate the 150th anniversaries of two of the major events in American history: the Civil War and the end of American slavery. Leaders of Richmond’s historical and tourism resources, along with Dr. James Horton, Professor of History Emeritus of George Washington University, and Dr. Lawrence Pijeaux, President of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, provided ideas and responses to a number of project collaboration ideas.

Virginia Union University and President Claude G. Perkins are hosting this second conversation. Virginia Union University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Richmond are offering venues and coordination for planning in addition to their educational resources and links to our area’s past.

Four hundred years of vibrant music and passionate poetry come alive as the Rose Ensemble combine their groundbreaking research from the world’s manuscript libraries with their distinctive and imaginative performances of vocal music.
This lyrical collection of Arab-Andalusian dances, Sephardic laments, Spanish villancicos, Hebrew chants and Galician cantigas weaves "a rich and dramatic tapestry as entertaining to see as to hear” (Choral Journal). In their first tour of the United States since their establishment in 1900, the Irish Guards and Regimental Band visit Richmond to share the glory of their signature pomp and pageantry.
Formed at the express wish of Queen Victoria to commemorate the bravery of Irish regiments who fought in South Africa, the band performs, in turn with four other foot guard bands, for the Mounting of the Queen’s Guard at Buckingham Palace and for state ceremonial occasions including royal weddings and the Queen’s Birthday Parade. With a current roster of 49 musicians, the band also performs in a variety of professional combinations including a concert band, marching band, salon orchestra, dance band, and fanfare trumpeters.

The ‘60s in America was a decade of heroes, violence, love, death, progress and disillusionment. What began, with the election of John F. Kennedy, as a decade of hope ended with the nation embroiled in an impossible war, her streets filled with riots and the devastating murders of three political icons.
The nation’s foremost radio theater company L.A. Theater Works presents a major new docudrama, co-commissioned by the Modlin Center, focused on Robert F. Kennedy’s personal and political journey. “RFK: The Journey to Justice,” written by Murray Horwitz and Jonathan Estrin, chronicles Kennedy’s transformation from ambivalence towards the Civil Rights movement to one of its fiercest champions.
His story provides a compelling and dramatic illumination of this historically definitive decade, enabling a new generation to hear the words, experience the tension and probe those issues that continue to resonate with Americans today.
