Bryant Simon is the author of EVERYTHING BUT THE COFFEE: LEARNING ABOUT AMERICA FROM STARBUCKS (University of California Press, 2009) and BOARDWALK OF DREAMS: ATLANTIC CITY AND THE FATE OF URBAN AMERICA (Oxford University Press, 2004).

Drawn from Simon's new book, this lecture will explore the larger meaning of Starbucks--what the smiling baristas, venti mocha frappuccinos, overstuffed chairs, and Paul McCartney CDs tell us about America at this troubling and uncertain junction in the nation's history. And also what our drink choices tell us about ourselves, our communities, our environment, and our everyday practice of politics on the branded consumer landscape of modern America.

Simon visited more than 450 Starbucks stores in 10 countries during five years of research for EVERYTHING BUT THE COFFEE. His book asks: Why did Starbucks take hold so quickly with consumers? What did it seem to provide over and above a decent cup of coffee? Why at the moment of Starbucks' profit-generating peak did the company lose its way, leaving observers baffled about how it might regain its customers and its cultural significance? EVERYTHING BUT THE COFFEE probes the company's psychological, emotional, political, and sociological power to discover how Starbucks' explosive success and rapid deflation exemplify American culture at this historical moment. Most important, the book shows that Starbucks speaks to a deeply felt American need for predictability and class standing, community and authenticity, revealing that Starbucks' appeal lies not in the product it sells but in the easily consumed identity it offers.

Sundowning is the debut production of the New York-based contemporary dance company, The DASH Ensemble. The evening length work is comprised of several highly physical chapters that blur the line between the rational and psychotic mind. The concert takes its audience through a daring display of deep connections between its characters and the connections they make within themselves through both real and imaginative circumstances. The term “sundowning” refers to a state of confusion at the end of the day and into the night, often leading to a state of increased agitation, activity and even borderline demented behavior. All types of agitating behaviors are forms of communication. The company uses this phenomenon as a platform to display a broad abstraction of self-realization showing that no matter how far one’s mind can take him outside the realm of what is deemed “real,” a person can and will obtain a very real and tangible result in his own development.

The state of Michigan is building a new industry to rival Hollywood - from creating cars to creating stars. The state offers the biggest film incentives in the nation, up to a 42% tax break for films produced in the state.

The trailblazing incentives are working. Last year over 35 movies were made in Michigan, generating approximately $120 million in revenue for the state. Nearly $60 million went directly to Michigan residents who worked on those films.

* Jim Burnstein - head of Screenwriting at University of Michigan and a main architect of Michigan's tax incentives for the film industry. Appointed to the board of the state Michigan Film Office Advisory Council.

The Malletts Creek Coordinating Committee and City of Ann Arbor staff will be hosting a public meeting to present and discuss a proposal to amend the City’s stormwater ordinance on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 at 7 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers, second floor, 100 N. Fifth Ave. in Ann Arbor.

In August 2007, City Council charged the Malletts Creek Coordinating Committee with prioritizing and implementing the April 2007 Watershed Recommendations of the Malletts Creek Association (citizens group) in resolution R-393-8-07. This proposed code change is a result of those recommendations.

The code amendment would require control of stormwater runoff, from the “first flush” storm event, on single and two-family residential property when adding 200 square feet or more of impervious area. The “first flush” is the runoff from the first ½ inch of rain during any storm event. The new requirement would only apply to the increase in impervious area.

Since approximately 40 percent of the entire land area in the City of Ann Arbor is zoned for single-family and two-family uses, the potential to reduce the negative impacts of stormwater runoff for the entire community is great compared to the minimal effort envisioned for property owners.

The currency of the issue and our members' expressed level of concern at our last two events have both informed our decision to show the rest of the latest documentary film by Robert Greenwald, "Rethink Afghanistan." On Sunday, November 22 we will, as with our September event, begin at 5:30 PM with a potluck dinner, and follow with more of this remarkable film.

Back in September only the first few parts of the film had been released. Rather than wait, we chose to show what we had in order to bring the issue of the Afghanistan war to San Mateo Peace Action's front burner. Peace Action West Political Director Rebecca Griffin's October talk complemented the film's message with more details and suggestions for channeling our activism. On November 22 we will "finish watching" the film and have another open comment period - to hear from each other and further explore what we can do both individually and collectively.

Part 5 of the film is called "Women of Afghanistan," and raises questions about whether this war can, as advertised by many of its boosters, liberate or help Afghani women. Part 6, simply called "Security," features ex-CIA agents making the case that there is no victory to be won Afghanistan. We have thus far avoided showing a segment called "Civilian Casualties" because of its graphic images. And on Sunday November 22, Beck Hall at UUSM will be the place to go to find community and share ideas coming out of the last three months of information we have tried to facilitate about the Afghanistan war. About the readers/performers:

Javier Grillo-Marxuach created The Middleman, a comic series that became a much-loved TV show on ABC Family. He also worked as a producer on the first two seasons of Lost, and has also written for Charmed, Seaquest: DSV, Medium, Jake 2.0, Boomtown and Dark Skies. He also wrote the Marvel Comics series Annihilation: Super Skrull.

S. Bear Bergman's latest book is The Nearest Exit May Be Behind You. Bergman also wrote Butch Is A Noun, and is co-editing the forthcoming anthology Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation, with Kate Bornstein. Bergman also wrote the "Day Of Remembrance" spoken-word piece which is frequently read at the Transgender Day Of Remembrance nationwide.

Mary Robinette Kowal's first novel, Shades Of Milk And Honey, comes out in 2010 from Tor, and a sequel called Glamour In Glass is also forthcoming. Her story "Evil Robot Monkey" was a Hugo finalist, and she won the Campbell Award for best new writer. Her story collection, Scenting The Dark And Other Stories, comes out soon.

Naomi Quiñonez's books of poetry include The Smoking Mirror and Sueno De Colibri: Hummingbird Dream. She also co-edited the anthology Invocation L.A.: Urban Multicultural Poetry.

Kat Richardson's novels include the Greywalker series, and her work appears in the anthologies Wolfsbane And Mistletoe and Mean Streets.
