How can we in Davis make the biggest impact possible during the final days of the Campaign for Change? Come find out! And at the same time, help lend moral support to Missouri's Region 10 volunteers (working tirelessly to get out every vote in St. Louis) by sending them freshly-baked cookies, and a lot of encouragement. We'll also find out direct ways WE can have an immediate impact on Missouri- a pink state teetering towards blue. It should be a fun, relaxed affair (with a very serious undertone, bordering on panic...).

Refreshments and cookie ingredients provided - bring mixers and cookie sheets if you like. Tell your friends and bring your kids; we'll be making our own yard signs too!

Wrapping up our classic horror for October is this - Dario Argento's arthouse meets splatter masterpiece from 1977!

From the moment she arrives in Freiberg, Germany, to attend the prestigious Tans Academy, American ballet-dancer Suzy Banyon (Jessica Harper) senses that something horribly evil lurks within the walls of the age-old institution. Ill at ease as the result of her fellow student's peculiar behavior and increasingly terrified following a series of gruesome and spectacular murders, Suzy slowly begins to unravel the dark history of the academy. Convinced that the occult roots of the school and the horrific tale of its founding mother may hold an unthinkable secret, she begins a hallucinatory journey into the black heart of one of the most powerful witches ever known to exist.

What there is of a plot is really secondary however, to the visual imagery (extreme colors were used with great calculation), camera work and incorporation of the haunting soundtrack to create a nightmare come to life. In fact, the plot really just provides structure to these visuals and sounds. Ordinary objects and settings are transformed into surreal, menacing components, all intended to unsettle the viewer.

Please note: this does contain some brutal and graphic murders. Shocking 31 years ago, these may still be highly disturbing to some viewers today. Please be aware of this. Under 17 requires parental or guardian consent.

F.W. Murnau's German silent classic is the original--and some say most frightening--"Dracula" adaptation, taking Bram Stoker's novel and turning it into a haunting, shadowy dream full of dread. Names had to be changed from the novel when Stoker's wife charged his novel was being filmed without proper permission. Count Orlok, the rodentlike vampire frighteningly portrayed by Max Schreck, is perhaps the most animalistic screen portrayal of a vampire ever filmed.

Ten years ago, a Pastor from the Voice of Pentecost Church in San Francisco received a 'prophetic whisper,' - a directive from Got to make movies for the Lord. Using donations from his congregation, her slowly transformed his church into a fully functioning movie studio. After experimenting on a number of small projects, Pastor Richard Gazowsky announced that he and his crew were going to make a film, "Gravity: The Shadow of Joseph," a $50 million (soon increasing to $200 million) biblical science fiction movie that would redefine the Hollywood epic and referred to by Gazowsky as "Star Wars meets The Ten Commandments."

"Audience of One" is a doc that chronicles the making of "Gravity," where just about everything that can go wrong, does. For over 3 years, "The Room" has been playing monthly to sold-out crowds in Los Angeles. And as it turns out, "The Room" has a bit of a fan base right here in Sacramento! Described by some as a vanity project gone horribly wrong, Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" defies description. Bizarrely writtend and delivered dialog, subplots that go nowhere, mysterious artwork in the background, and so much more!

What's it all about? Since the official synopsis is far too lengthy, suffice it to say that the core of the plot is a love triangle involving Johnny (Tommy Wiseau), his fiance Lisa (Juliette Danielle), and his best friend Mark (Greg Sestero). Also involved is Denny (Philip Haldiman), the oddly enthusiastic orphan who sees Johnny as a father figure. If you want to know more, you've just got to get out to this screening.

Made in 1962 in Lawrence, Kansas for very little money, Herk Harvey's "Carnival of Souls" has become legendary for its ability to create a tensely creepy atmosphere with virtually no special effects. A young woman, Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss), is involved in a car crash when her car falls off a bridge while drag racing with some friends. After she pulls herself from the river, she moves to a new town to take a job as a church organist. En route, she passes an abandoned carnival outside of town. Meanwhile, a distinctly eerie and hollow-faced man in a black suit seems to be following her wherever she goes. As the man begins to appear more and more, Mary is drawn to the carnival which seems to hold the secret to her destiny. Creepy, haunting, low-budget arthouse suspense and an admitted direct influence on George Romero when making "Night of the Living Dead."
