Aug 19, 2008: Montreal on Rails #10 at Standout Jobs

Ruby on Rails is one of the fastest-growing language/frameworks of all time, and is extremely well-suited to rapid, or agile, development practices. Why then, we asked ourselves, is there not a bigger community of RoR developers in Montreal? Where are they all? We decided to create Montreal on Rails to find out.

Montreal on Rails is our invitation to the Montreal Ruby on Rails community to come out and play together. And by that we mean, code & learn together. With MoR, we want to bring some level of cohesion to the local Rails community and provide a fun monthly gathering point where developers can come to exchange with one another. There will be laughs, there will be tears (hey we can be sensitive - don’t judge) and there will be pizza (bring some cash if you want to partake!).

So if you live in (or around Montreal) and are developing in Ruby on Rails (or want to learn) and speak either (or both) of our official languages, then you are formally invited to come out to our events.

Aug 20, 2008: Carey West Celebrates Gets Fresh At Nathan Phillips Square at Nathan Phillips Square

For more information, contact: Carey West, westcarey@sympatico.ca

CAREY WEST CELEBRATES GETS FRESH AT NATHAN PHILLIPS SQUARE

JULY 23, 2008 (Toronto, ON) -- Carey West performs as part of the Fresh Wednesday series at Nathan Phillips Square on August 20th. The show, free to the public, will include two sets starting at 12:00 noon.

A much-celebrated Toronto fixture with over a decade fronting bands such as The Millionaires, The Liquidaires and The Jeremiahs, West offers the next chapter of her story with “Travel Light,” released this past May.
A collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Jeff Wilson (Maza Meze, Sultans of String), the album reveals West's diverse musical influences, drawing on reggae, jazz, R&B, and folk to tell tales inspired by the streets of Toronto.

“Deck Song” was inspired by celebrations hosted in Carey’s west end neighbourhood during the World Cup, and features the sounds of marimba, melodica, bike horn and surdu. Together West and Wilson blend the influence of a multicultural city with the tradition of the Canadian singer songwriter.

Travel Light was awarded funding from the Ontario Arts Council and has received airplay on CBC Radio One and Two.

What people are saying about Travel Light:

"What a wonderful sound."

"Carey West and Jeff Wilson have a great ear for production. Absolutely love it!"

"I can tell I'm going to be addicted to this."

Mar 28, 2009: Earth Hour 2009 at Canada wide

With growing concern about the effects of global warming, Earth Hour demonstrated that collectively people can make a difference. So what happened?

* 50 million people around the world switched off their lights for one hour
* More than 370 cities, towns and municipalities took part
* Earth Hour was held in more than 35 countries across seven continents, including Antarctica across more than 18 different time zones
* From the Middle East to Asia to Europe and the Americas – millions from all corners of the globe played a part and celebrated Earth Hour in their own local way
* 40,000 people gathered at a pedal powered concert in Tel Aviv; 19,000 people gathered to hear Nelly Furtado sing in Toronto, Canada; businesses, school groups, communities and individuals celebrated all over the world with candle lit dinners, torch parties and street celebrations
* The lights of the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta USA switched off as did the famous Coke sign in Kings Cross, Sydney as well as the Coke billboard in Times Square, New York. Google home page went black.
* Iconic buildings and landmarks went dark including the infamous Alcatraz Jail in San Francisco, The Sydney Opera House, The Sears Tower, Azrieali Tower in Tel Aviv, Tivoli in Copenhagen, The Coliseum in Rome, Italy, Jumeirah Hotel in Dubai and the lights of Brighton Pier in the UK.

Earth Hour 2008 was the biggest voluntary power down in history. It inspired many people and businesses to change their energy habits and has influenced government policy in some countries.

World Wildlife Fund is proud to have had the involvement and support of so many public officials, famous places, individuals and families, and major corporations – all of whom helped make Earth Hour 2008 a global success.

Earth Hour is all about the small changes that everyone is capable of making in their lives and building the Earth Hour ethos into each days living. Turning the lights off, represents turning the lights on in your mind, to the benefit of emissions reduction. Imagine the result, if everyone around the globe switched off their lights for one hour? Show the world you care with one simple action. Collectively we can make a big difference. Earth Hour joins people together, it can save you money and it can help save the planet. So gear up for what will be the biggest and most important Earth Hour of our planet’s history.

EARTH HOUR 2009 – SATURDAY 28 MARCH 2009 8:30 PM

Aug 30, 2008: Sound Walk at Centre Island

SOUNDwalks
co-presented with the Canadian Association for Sound Ecology
Meet us at the clock tower on Centre Island near the ferry dock island-side
In a soundwalk, the listening "audience" moves through a place and the environment "performs." The walking listener and the environment create a unique piece together that can only occur during the time of the walk. In a soundwalk we take the time to hear the environment: we are its true ear witnesses. And like any musician, the environment offers us its sounds for our consideration. Participants should be sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for any weather condition.

TORONTO ELECTROACOUSTIC SYMPOSIUM
August 8 and 9, 2008

The Canadian Electroacoustic Community, the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto and New Adventures in Sound Art are pleased to announce the second annual Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium. The symposium will take place at the Faculty of Music, and St. Andrew by-the-Lake church and will lead directly into the main performance weekend of the annual Sound Travels festival on Toronto Island. Alongside a selection of refereed papers and presentations, the symposium will feature keynote lectures by Sound Travels' composers-in-residence Robert Normandeau and Ellen Waterman. A late-night event hosted by the angelusnovus.net group will provide a space for live electronic and improvised expressions in an "open-mic" format on the 8th. The proceedings of the symposium will be published in a forthcoming issue of the CEC's online journal, eContact!.
+ THE SONIC PORTRAIT LISTENING GALLERY
curated by Darren Copeland

A site for interactivity and reception, Wish You Were Here is a collective soundscape of audio greeting cards intended to be experienced within the hands of participants through physical and aural sampling. The sounds are of field recordings, fragmented and manipulated to reinterpret the conventional notion of a sentiment and sense of place in the model of a greeting card. Re-contextualizing recorded material within this format places limits— including time, compression, and availability—while initiating an accessible, portable, and participatory narrative. Sound Travels Documents is an audio-visual exhibition documenting 10 years of previous Sound Travels events on Toronto Island. Translating the original auditory experience into the visual, using visual textures and point-of-view, the images are a record of soundwalks, participants, artists, and sound/new media installations accompanied by the sounds of the performances themselves. The Sonic Portrait Listening Gallery offers the chance to Travel the world soundscape through the imaginations of sound artists from around the world collected from an international call for submissions in September 2007.
