21st-century writing takes on many forms. At the Rutgers University English Department's new Writers House, students take on traditional forms of writing, as well as writing in new media. Each semester sees the creation of outstanding works of fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and drama, as well as graphic stories, digital poetry, blogs, and film, among other genres. The Zimmerli Art Museum is proud to showcase the outstanding student-generated work by Writers House in classes ranging from Creative Writing: Poetry to New Media for Writers. This year, creative writing students will be invited to exhibit their work at the Zimmerli Art Museum, Lower Dodge Gallery in the event The Art of Poetry: Writers House Creativity Showcase.

The Art of Music presents a concert by Rosanne Vita Nahass, Zimmerli Art Museum Pianist in Residence. She will perform music Ferrucio Busoni. Busoni is often overlooked and his landmark masterpiece, the Fantasia Contrappuntistica, is rarely heard in public performance. Composed in 1910 and completed in New Orleans during an American concert tour, the Fantasia Contrappuntistica is based on Bach's unfinished last composition, The Art of Fugue. Busoni rewrites the work perhaps as Bach would have, had he lived bridging the era of Romanticism with Modernity.

Thirty-six illustrations selected from the Zimmerli Art Museums holdings of over 60 childrens book illustrations by Lois Lenski (1893-1974) reveal ways in which the Newbery Awardwinning author/illustrators deep interest in the daily lives and activities of children is reflected in visual components of her books. Lenskis groundbreaking picture book, The Little Auto (1934), features clear hand-lettered text and engaging black and red illustrations that resonate with the imaginative play of a child with a toy car. Reflecting her ideas about the preferences of young children, crisp ink drawings with touches of color predominate in works such as Now Its Fall (1948), and figures and action are contained within the frame of the page. Concurrently with creating picture books, Lenski researched, wrote, and illustrated fiction for older children. Beginning in the early 1940s, Lenski determined to investigate and describe in fiction the lives of children from various regions of the United States currently under-represented in juvenile literature. Books such as Judys Journey (1947), a novel about a girl whose family earns a living as migrant workers, provided children of the World War II and post-war era with a perspective on lives much different from their own. Small, information-packed illustrations in graphite or ink amplify, but dont compete with the texts. Books for viewing and for browsing will be on display in the gallery, along with activities for visitors. Illustrations on view in the gallery, some being shown for the first time, are the gift of the artists son, Steven Covey. The exhibition is organized by Gail Aaron, Assistant Curator, Original Illustrations for Childrens Books, Morse Research Center for Graphic Arts. NJYP is proud to present 4 Minute Friending for Women. Yes, we did just say Friending. Think of Speed Dating only without the date. You will meet with someone for a few minutes then, at the ring of a bell, move on to the next person. By the end of the night the whole thing will turn into a mingle, only for once you will actually know most of the crowd.

Additionally, before starting the Friending, you will be given an information sheet that will list each participant's Name, Email, Job Title, and Interests! Yup, you can easily contact your new friends to get together on a Friday night, to exercise with, to shop with, to network with, etc.

Who should attend:
This event is open to WOMEN who are 21-39, single or married.
