Nov 20, 2009: The Art of Richard Mayhew: Journey's End at De Saisset Museum

This exhibition consists of paintings and watercolors executed from the late 1970s to early 1990s. During this period, Mayhew was a professor of art at Pennsylvania State University. For a four-year period beginning in 1975, he would take sabbaticals from his position in Pennsylvania and drive across the country in order to teach at San Jose State. These transcontinental sojourns, sometimes via a northern route through Canada and other times via the Southwest, provided a wealth of inspiration for his expressionistic landscapes. They are not exact evocations of any particular location, but rather composite impressions, based on his memories of the various places he had visited.

Dec 5, 2009: Truce of Carols & Amahl and the Night Visitors at Mission City Center for Performing Arts (MCCPA)

WORLD PREMIERE and a Holiday Favorite!

TRUCE OF CAROLS is new opera based on the poignant, true story of Christmas Eve 1914, in the Belgian trenches of WWI. Michael Taylor has created a vibrantly beautiful new opera that envelopes us in that moment of time.

AMAHL & the NIGHT VISITORS features 10 year old Ryan Nelson as the title character, Amahl; Margaret Lisi as his mother; and Eric Coyne, Martin Bell, and Norm DeVol as the "Visitors" in this holiday tale of a young boy's stories that become a reality.

The story of "TRUCE" began on Christmas Eve 1914, when German troops began decorating the area around their trenches in the region of Ypres, Belgium, for Christmas. They placed candles on trees then continued the celebration by singing Christmas carols, most notably Stille Nacht (Silent Night). The British troops in the trenches across from them responded by singing English carols. The two sides shouted Christmas greetings to each other. Soon thereafter, visits across the "No Man's Land" took place where the soldiers exchanged small gifts of whisky, jam, cigars, chocolate, sometimes addresses, and drank together. The artillery in the region fell silent that night. The truce also allowed burial parties a breathing spell to retrieve recently-fallen soldiers and bring them back behind their own lines. Proper burials took place as soldiers from both sides mourned the dead together and paid their respects, in spite of opposition at higher levels of the military. The truce spread to other areas of the lines, and there are many stories of soccer matches between the opposing forces. It lasted every where through Christmas night and in some areas, continued until New Year's Day.

TRUCE OF CAROLS artists include: Adam Flowers, Benjamin Cohen, C.A. Jordan, Cliff Romig, Dan Galpin, Eric Coyne, Erin Lahm, Jeffrey Taylor, Norm DeVol, Robert Snedegar, and Sascha Joggerst, the Mission City Opera Orchestra and of course Michael Taylor.

$15 - $45.

Nov 19, 2009: FountainBlue's Transitions Event at TEN's Santa Clara Venture Accelerator

Recruiter Panel: NEW Secrets for Securing Executive Positions
Last month, we heard from recently-landed executives about how the search for executive positions has changed. This month, we’re polling the recruiters themselves to ask them not only how the search process has changed, but WHY it has changed and what it means for senior executives. Bobbie LaPorte will again moderate our panel, this time representing the recruiter’s perspective:

•	Moderator Roberta LaPorte, RAL & Associates

•	John L. McDonald, Senior Partner, Executive Search Practice, DURAN HUMAN CAPITAL PARTNERS

•	Gretchen Sand, Principal, SKYLINE RECRUITING

•	Ann Zeichner, Managing Director, TAYLOR WINFIELD

It is our hope that last month’s event, this month’s event, and the survey results will help us document and share how the game has changed for executives seeking positions in today’s market. Here’s how you can contribute to these efforts:

•	Please weigh in on YOUR thoughts about how the game has changed for YOU as an executive in transition today and in the past. Complete our eight-question online survey at http://tinyurl.com/pgu9cj by November 1 at noon.

•	Volunteer to take a ten minute telephone survey to provide more details about your executive job search experience.

•	Forward the request for survey to interested others in your network.

•	Recommend an association, recruiter or others who might be interested in participating in a telephone interview, or forwarding our survey to interested executives in their networks.

Thank you for your support in this endeavor. We look forward to sharing our findings with you and others in our network.

Nov 14, 2009: PATCA Seminar:Social Media Victories-Real Business, Campaigns, Results at Key Point Credit Union

PATCA's consultant seminar series features popular presenter Patrick Schwerdtfeger of Tactical Execution, who returns to share more of his most successful tips and techniques for profiting from the real-time social media conversation.

During this half-day session, Schwerdtfeger will analyze specific tactics used by actual companies in real life situations. He will deliver successful case studies where organizations have leveraged Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube to increase revenue and drive brand awareness.

The workshop is designed for consultants and small business owners who want to build their businesses using proven social media strategies.

Topics on the program include:

**Twitter - Participate in the Conversation
**LinkedIn - Communicate with Precision
**Facebook - Engage Your Community
**YouTube - Leverage Rich Media
**Putting it All Together - Become an Online Rock Star in 30 Minutes per Day

The most powerful component of the program provides the missing piece of the puzzle that isn't found in most social media workshops. Step through a 2-week execution plan that takes only 30 minutes a day, allows Fridays off, and creates a rock star online presence. Learn to put all of Schwerdtfeger's tips into practice without neglecting client work. Key takeaways: Nine different ways to use consulting content, and techniques to spend less time than competitors with better results.

PATCA members, guests, and the public are welcome to attend. Advance reservations strongly recommended. Handouts of the presentation will be provided. Individual laptops will not be required.

Patrick Schwerdtfeger is the founder of Tactical Execution; a company that leverages progressive marketing strategies to build credibility and exposure for its clients. Patrick is an award winning speaker and has given hundreds of workshops and seminars across the United States and western Canada.

Jan 24, 2010: City's Historical Collection at Headen-Inman Historical Museum

The Headen-Inman House, part of the Headen estate, was moved in 1985 to the Civic Center location at 1505 Warburton Avenue. In 1984, Irene Inman, widow of Dr. Inman, sold the property to a private developer, but stipulated that the house be given to the City of Santa Clara and that the developer pay to move the house. This is the second of two museum houses in Santa Clara, the other being the Harris-Lass House. The structure was built in 1913 and the architectural is classified as Craftsman Bungalow. It is a fine example of the Arts and Crafts movement and has a four-panel door with beveled glass lights and fine interior wood work. The museum houses the City's historical collection and features Santa Clara's artifacts.

Organization: SVPMA - Silicon Valley Product Management Association
Topic: Selling SaaS in a Product World: Challenges for a product manager when selling services
Speaker: Mike Schmitt, Director of Product Management, Brocade Communications
Date: Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009
Time: 6:30pm - 9pm
Location: Network Meeting Center at the TechMart - 5201 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara
Cost: Free for Members. $25 for pre-registered Non-Members. $35 at the door.
More info: http://www.svpma.org/meetings.html

Presentation:
As product managers we are always being asked to (figuratively) think outside of the box. But what does that mean in a literal sense? How do you take a product based company to a service based – Software as a Service (SaaS)/ Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) model? This discussion will look at the challenges hardware technology companies face when trying to monetize offerings other than their core goods.

This session will talk about overcoming objections throughout the company: from Sales who are focused on selling products and insist customers will not pay; Back office operations not designed to deliver intangibles, to Finance who wrestles with Revenue Recognition and compliance challenges.

Speaker:
Mike Schmitt has worked at Brocade for 8 years where he has been responsible for building and delivering most of the company’s market expansion products and services. He is also responsible for out of the box marketing with his creation of DCX Man and comic book style of marketing collateral focused on the company’s key consumer.

Before taking on the challenge to build and market support and service offerings at Brocade, Mike worked as a product manager developing high-end hardware products. Prior to Brocade, Mike consulted to hardware companies on Reliability, Accessibility Serviceability (RAS) and compliance engineering for consumer, telecommunications and medical equipment. During the early part of his tech career he was responsible for business development in a venture funded company that brought DVD technology to the home computer.
