La Artcore presents a retrospective exhibition of Los Angeles artist Janet Mackaig.

Janet Mackaig has had a long and influential career in Los Angeles. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from CSU, Los Angeles, and has participated in over three hundred exhibitions, nationally and abroad. Mackaig has won numerous awards, her work is sited in over fifty publications, and her paintings are represented in many public and private collections throughout the world.

Mackaig employs several different techniques to create her raucous and satirical paintings/constructions. Photography, text, cut-outs and collage are often utilized in the creative process. Her imagery includes animals and humans, who co-mingle in a variety of environments, metamorphosing from one species to another; taking different forms to poignantly underscore the absurdities inherent in our cultural milieu.

While traveling, Mackaig photographs, without preconceived notions, images which pique her interest. Back in the studio, visual components are bought together intuitively, not intellectually. After the basic composition of a painting is decided upon, the image is digitally rendered, then completely and freely painted by the artist. Thus the image is altered several times before it becomes the final construction.

Ms. Mackaig says, “The content in these works of art have separated life into segments or situations. They resemble stream of consciousness writing. There is no consciousness logic. The paintings have a strong personal intent, looking beyond the obvious. The artist is a traveler seeking adventures. A record is kept through photographs and back in the studio they can be used as a reference. Colors and materials belong to the conscious mind and act as a reference and guide into the painting, and the adventure into the unconscious. I like to think of my work as a visual haiku.”

The Women of Color Resource Center will be hosting a Brown Bag event this month.

Sunaina Maira, currently an associate professor of Asian American Studies at UC Davis, will be introducing her new book, Missing: Youth, Citizenship, and Empire after 9/11.

Maira's teaching and research interests are youth, popular culture, transnationalism, South Asian immigrant communities, and U.S. empire. She has worked with various community and immigrant organizations in the Boston area such as Youth Solidarity Summer, a program for young activists of South Asian descent, which she co-founded, and South Asian Committee of Human Rights (SACH), which focused on post-9/11 civil and immigrant rights issues in the Boston Area. She has also worked with groups here in the Bay Area.

Maira also authored Desis in the House: Indian American Youth Culture in New York City, and has edited other works.

John Hafernik joins us to speak on whether or not the green roof of the California Academy of Sciences provides habitat for native insects. Hafernik shares his findings on the insects that dwell on the green roof and if they differ from those found in other parts of Golden Gate Park.

John Hafernik is Professor of Biology at San Francisco State University where he studies the evolution, ecology and conservation biology of insects. He was elected a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences in 1982 and has served the Academy in many roles since including his current role as President of the Board of Trustees. In terms of San Francisco Natural History, he and his students have conducted a number of arthropod diversity studies in the Presidio over the last 15 years.

USC THORNTON FACULTY MEMBERS PAY HOMAGE TO SCHOOL’S 125th ANNIVERSARY WITH FREE “OPUS 125” CONCERT FEATURING MUSIC BASED ON THE THEME OF 125

More than a dozen of USC Thornton School of Music’s internationally acclaimed faculty members from the keyboard, strings, jazz, guitar and other departments will pay homage to the renowned school’s 125th Anniversary with “Opus 125,” a free concert featuring music based on the theme of 125 on Saturday, November 15, 2009, at 4:00 P.M., at USC’s Alfred Newman Recital Hall.

Stewart Gordon, Professor of Keyboard Studies, is helping to produce the concert and has – specifically for the program –spearheaded the research about musical literature that relates to the number 125.

Among numerous highlights, Adam Gilbert, chair of the early music department, has created an arrangement of a portion of J. S. Bach’s Cantata BWV 125 for singers.

Violinist Peter Marsh of the string faculty heads a faculty group that will perform one of two string quartets in Op. 125 composed by Franz Schubert.

The most famous Op. 125 in music history is the Beethoven 9th Symphony. It will be represented in a piano arrangement written by Franz Liszt in1852, part of which will be performed by piano faculty members Kevin Fitz-Gerald and Bernadine Blaha.

Also from the piano faculty, Norman Krieger will perform the Chopin Scherzo in C-sharp minor. Originally labeled Op. 39, the musicologist Maurice Brown, who catalogued Chopin's works and whose system Chopin scholars most frequently use, gave it the catalogue number 125, explaining why it is often identified as B.125.

James Smith, chair of the classical guitar department, leads some of his esteemed colleagues in a set of variations for guitar on Irish folk tunes, Op. 125 written by little known guitar composer Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829).

In addition, jazz pianist Alan Pasqua, chair of the jazz studies department, leads a faculty combo that will improvise a jazz set based on the chord progression I, II, V.
