Nov 20, 2009: Opening: Abraham Lincoln: Self Made in America at Branigan Cultural Center

Las Cruces, NM –The Branigan Cultural Center is one of forty institutions nationwide to host “Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America.” The world-class traveling exhibit, organized by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, will be in Las Cruces November 20 – December 18, 2009. The next nearest stops for the exhibit are in Dallas, Denver, and the Los Angeles area.

“Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America” was created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of America’s greatest presidents. The exhibit covers Lincoln’s childhood, his self-education, his careers as a surveyor and lawyer, his family life, the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, the 1860 Presidential election, the Civil War, the 13th Amendment, the Emancipation Proclamation, his assassination, and other important periods and events in his life. The reproduction artifacts on display, all modeled from originals in the Presidential Library and Museum, include: Lincoln’s favorite books; his son Tad’s toy cannon; the nameplate from his Springfield home; his stovepipe hat, which he used like a briefcase to hold important papers; a Presidential campaign banner; an axe that Lincoln used to chop wood; the bloody gloves found in Lincoln’s pocket the night of his assassination; and many other unique and interesting items.

The grand opening of the exhibit is Friday, November 20th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. It features a New Mexico Humanities Council Chautauqua program with Abraham Lincoln escorted to the exhibit by an1860s Military Honor Guard. Dr. Dwight Picaithley will provide a brief overview of Lincoln’s life. The Las Cruces Friends of Chamber Music will provide musical background.

Many special events have been planned in conjunction with the exhibit. The Mesilla Valley Film Society starts things off on November 14th with Cine Matinee at the Fountain Theater featuring the film “Young Mr. Lincoln.” The 1939 movie stars Henry Fonda as Lincoln in a fictionalized court case and was directed by John Ford.

On Saturday, December 5, 2009, Dr. Picaithley, former Chief Historian for the National Park Service, will speak on Lincoln’s lasting influence on New Mexico. The lecture starts at 1:00 p.m. in the Shannon Gallery at Branigan Cultural Center.

The Las Cruces Friends of Chamber Music will present some of Lincoln’s favorite pieces in a concert of period music on Sunday, December 6th, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Cultural Center.

There are literally hundreds of biographies on Lincoln covering every aspect of his life. A panel discussion on Wednesday, December 9th, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. will review several of the more popular biographies.

The “We, the People” program of the National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency, provided major financial support for the exhibition and accompanying programs. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation and the History Channel provided additional financial and in-kind support. The American Library Association of Chicago and the Tribeca Film Institute of New York made strong contributions to the exhibit programming.

The Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main Street, is located at the north end of the Downtown Mall in Las Cruces. The exhibit and reception is free and open to the public. Galleries are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information about exhibits and programs, contact the Branigan Cultural Center at (575) 541-2154 or visit the Center’s web site at las-cruces.org/museums.

Dec 4, 2009: New Exhibitions Open at Las Cruces Museum of Art

Explore the world of pattern and abstraction as three new exhibits open at the Las Cruces Museum of Art on Friday, November 20th. An artists’ reception will be held in conjunction with the First Friday Ramble, Friday, December 4th from 5 to 7 pm. The exhibitions run through Saturday, January 23rd.

Albuquerque artist Margi Weir presents “Three Decades of Inquiry,” a retrospective of her work in multiple mediums. While focusing on painting throughout her career, Weir’s work is often sculptural, and has evolved over the years from abstract to figural. She has advanced degrees in painting from both the University of California at Los Angeles and New Mexico State University and is currently an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan.

“Swarm” is the work of local artist, and Associate Professor at New Mexico State University, Julia Barello. She works with discarded x-ray film that is dyed and intricately cut into shapes inspired by nature. Her obsessive, jewel-toned installations are created by arranging the film into patterns and pinning it directly to the wall. Julia Barello’s artwork has been exhibited across the country and she was recently awarded Best in Show, Alternative Media at the 2008 Southwest Biennial at the Albuquerque Museum.

“Mirage,” the work of jewelry artist Rachelle Thiewes, is also on display. This collection, constructed of steel, silver, and automobile paint, was inspired by “the interplay of light and shadow and the resulting distortions of reality.” Thiewes’ unique jewelry is held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It has been featured in numerous publications, including The Best in Contemporary Jewelry. She is currently a Professor at the University of Texas El Paso.

Funded by the City of Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Museum of Art is located at 491 N. Main Street, at the north end of the downtown mall. Exhibits are accessible and free of charge. For information, call (575) 541-2137 or visit the website www.museums.las-cruces.org.256

For information, call (575) 541-2137 or visit the website www.museums.las-cruces.org.

Nov 20, 2009: Exhibit: Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America at Branigan Cultural Center

8pm, Free

This is a homegrown Pub Quiz modeled after those in Ireland and the UK.

What is a Pub Quiz? Good question, find out more here. Or read about us in Westword or The Rocky Mountain News.

Our quizzes cover everything from celebrities in trouble to local lore to bad television. You can get a feel for the questions we ask by playing a sample round here.

We’re the only pub quiz that has audio questions: "Name that Tune,” and one comprised of soundbites from movies and TV.

Play in teams of up to six or by yourself if you're some kind of savant.

If you want to play but don’t have a team, come anyway. We can usually get single players recruited onto an existing team. Others have had success wrangling teammates on the Strictly Platonic section of Craigslist

Our Bonus Email Question is good for a free prize. Win anything from this...to this. Sign up for our email list on our website.

Winning team gets street cred, bar cash and other prizes depending on the venue. Bonus Questions for free pints are sprinkled throughout the quiz.

You don’t have to be a trivia God to enjoy the quiz. Since you’re playing on a team, the collective knowledge base makes for more fun, less pressure. It’s not Final friggin Jeopardy.

Dec 5, 2009: Lincoln Poetry at Branigan Cultural Center

As a part of the Abraham Lincoln exhibit at the Branigan Cultural Center, a special poetry reading will occur on Saturday, December 5 at 2:00 p.m. Hosted by poet Wayne Crawford, the reading will include poetry by Lincoln, Lincoln’s favorite poems, poems written about Lincoln, and poems written to Lincoln while he served as President of the United States. Lincoln had a lifelong interest in both reading and writing poetry.

Local and area poets who will read include Sheila Black, Peter Brooks, Crawford, Billy Garrett, Joan Glicker, Michael Mandel, John Pate, Tim Staley, Dick Thomas, Joanne Townsend, and Ellen Roberts Young.

Among Lincoln’s favorite poems are Mortality by William Knox, (read by John Pate) The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe (read by Michael Mandel), The Last Leaf by Oliver Wendell Holmes, (Billy Garrett) and poetry from Macbeth. Lincoln ranked Shakespeare supreme, and commented that, “I think nothing equals Macbeth. It is wonderful.”

Poems about Lincoln include, A Farmer Remembers Lincoln by Witter Bynner (read by Peter Brooks), Lincoln by James Whitcomb Riley (read by Joan Glicker), The Emancipation Group by John Greenleaf Whittier (read by Joanne Townsend), The Martyr by Herman Melville (John Pate), The Death of Lincoln by William Cullen Bryant (Tim Staley), and When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed by Walt Whitman (Ellen Roberts Young).

Ordinary citizen wrote passionately about Lincoln and sent their poems to him at the White House. Lincoln read them all and commented on a few of them. They are as moving as those by better known poets. Among those that will be read are works by Anna Bache (1861) Lincoln at Springfield (read by Sheila Black), Appleton Oaksmith (1861) Song of the Union League (ready by Tim Staley), Frank Wells (1864) To President Lincoln (Lincoln called this “pretty fair poetry”) (read by Dick Thomas), and Hannibal Cox, March 1864 (Poem from a soldier in 14th U.S. Colored Troops) (read by Peter Brooks).

The event will begin with a poem written by Abraham Lincoln and read by Sheila Black.
