Michigan Family Pet Expo, Michigan’s largest and most attended pet-lover event, will feature adoptable dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, birds and other pets of all sizes and breeds being put up for adoption by local, state and regional rescue groups and shelters. Adoption fees and terms will vary by group.

“The Expo is a great place to find your new best friend,” says Jody Baum, show manager with Tower Productions, which produces the Expo. “Many of the rescues and shelters have an abundance of pets that got left behind in the recession. Not only will you find a loving new pet, but you will be giving a dog, cat or other pet a second chance for a good home.”

Expo visitors will witness dozens of fit, fine-tuned and fired-up felines finessing their way through an obstacle course of tunnels, fences, hoops and ladders. The cats are encouraged on by their owners enticing them with toy birds and dragonflies dangling from the end of small wooden poles.

G.L.A.C.E., based in Okemos, Michigan, awards cash prizes to owners of cats that demonstrate the fastest times with the least number of mistakes. Some cats may qualify for international agility titles and can also earn certificates attesting to particular “cat-e-gories” of skill.

The International Cat Agility Tournament will include mixed-breed house cats and kittens as well as purebreds like Abyssinians and Bengals that are generally stars in cat agility given their muscular, active and athletic natures, and beautiful Persians with their flowing coats that are breathtaking to watch.

“People are always amazed when we talk about training cats,” says G.L.A.C.E. President Susan Lee. “Actually, cats are more like horses than dogs on the agility course. They look ahead to the next obstacle much like a horse will look ahead to the next jump.”

G.L.A.C.E., part of The International Cat Association, has members in eight states and holds competitions in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio. The group will also judge an exhibit of purebred cats featuring more than 20 breeds and conduct a Parade of Breeds explaining cat breed origins and personalities, along with seminars on grooming and “What Color is My Cat and Why?” Staff from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine will answer questions on feline health.

“More people are beginning to see cats as the highly intelligent, complex creatures they are,” Lee said. “That is, of course, when they want to be!”

Winston and his 14 canine sidekicks, many of them rescued from animal shelters and pounds around the U.S., entertain audiences with their exciting and talented performances that include jumping rope, climbing ladders and knocking down human ringleader Johnny Peers and walking all over him. Johnny Peers & the Muttville Comix has performed from coast to coast and on four continents with appearances on David Letterman, Primetime Live and Animal Planet.

“It is organized chaos,” says Peers who got his start as a clown for Ringling Brothers Circus. “We perform a lot of funny tricks to make people laugh. We get the audience involved. And of course, the dogs look like the smart ones!”

Peers says that each of the Muttville dogs has his or her own unique character and attributes, providing for an interesting combination of stunts and audience interaction. Of course there is Winston, who people fall in love with for his outgoing nature and entertaining antics. Then there is Rocky, a three-pound toy fox terrier, rescued from a New Jersey animal shelter, who loves to stand on people’s heads. And there is Daphne, the basset hound from West Virginia, who nobody wanted to adopt because she had a broken tail. And don’t forget Scruffy, the terrier mix, rescued in Missouri from an outdoor pen.

But according to Peers, the shelter dogs, who are now the famous Muttville dogs, all still have one thing in common: they love to perform.

“It is surprising how much these dogs love to interact with people and be in front of an audience," Peers says. “Many of them had a rough start. I think they are really just happy to be part of something. It is unbelievable.”

Peers trained his first shelter pup in 1972. All of his dogs are spayed or neutered which Peers advocates for all pets to help reduce pet overpopulation. It can then take anywhere from six months to one year for a dog to be trained. “That is,” Peers says,” if they want to be part of the show.”
