Oct 28, 2008: Open Source for Games Developers - A Debate on New Business Models at Zero-One

Open source techniques in software development are already employed by multinationals and spreading fast to other areas of creative productions. They encourage collaboration, make development processes transparent and can achieve better quality faster and at lower costs. Yet despite those apparent benefits, open source technology is still the domain of a small but thriving community of independent games developers trying to find innovative ways of distribution, engaging their customers and exploring new business models along the way.

We will discuss the relative merits of their particular approaches in the context of the corporate games industry’s most recent successes to save a traditional business model by enforcing copyright law the hard way and potentially alienating future customers.

The event is free but places are limited. Please register here to reserve your place: http://www.own-it.org/events/

The panel is chaired by Becky Hogge, the Executive Director of Open Rights Group. Before joining the Open Rights Group in January 2007, Becky was the managing editor, and then the technology director and technology commissioning editor for http://www.openDemocracy.net. During her time there she established the China environment website http://www.chinadialogue.net, along with editor Isabel Hilton. As a writer and commentator, she covers the global politics of technology, open source, and intellectual property rights. She writes a weekly technology column for the New Statesman and has also written for The Guardian, Index on Censorship, Dazed & Confused and The Face.

Speakers include:
Vincent Scheurer, Lawyer, Sarassin LLP
Vincent Scheurer is the founder of Sarassin LLP, a legal and business affairs consultancy for companies in the video games industry.

Vincent graduated in law at Oxford University in 1993 and was called to the Bar in London in 1994. He started his career in interactive entertainment when he joined UK games publisher Europress as sole in-house counsel in 1997. Following the acquisition of Europress by Hasbro Interactive he joined UK law firm Osborne Clarke during 1999. There he helped develop Europe's pre-eminent interactive entertainment team, representing industry leaders from the publishing, development and licensing sectors. Vincent left Osborne Clarke to form Sarassin LLP in August 2004.

Vincent is also a contributor to the IGDA Contract Walk-Through, the editor of the TIGA model contract for developing PC, console and mobile games, and the author of the video games section of the Entertainment and Media Law Handbook, published by Law Society Publishing in 2007.http://www.sarassin.net/

Chris Deering
Chris has a background of 20 years in gaming including 10 years as founder and CEO of PlayStation-Europe, and 2 years as President of Sony Electronics Europe. He was COO of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment International from 1990-1995 and VP RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video from 1985-1990. A graduate of Harvard Business School, Chris also had various marketing management positions with Gillette and McKinsey&Co. He is now Chairman of Codemasters Group ( computer games), is on the boards of various high tech entertainment start-ups, and has been Chairman of the Edinburgh Interactive Entertainment Festival since 2006. Chris was awarded a Bafta in 2003 for service to the UK games industry.

Steven Goodwin
Steven Goodwin (London, England) has been in the game industry for nearly 15 years and involved in projects on both PC and console, writing the number 1 selling game, "Die Hard: Vendetta". He is also an Open Source evangelist, developer, columnist, and author of two books, including "The Game Developer's Open Source Handbook". He is currently the Head of Development with Alten8, a publisher and developer of over 50 games.

We encourage contributions by the audience and will address your concerns and questions during the debate.

Oct 31, 2008: The C Word at BAFTA

This day-long London Games Fringe event at BAFTA will look at the often used term “convergence” to discover a real crossover in the production and post-production processes involved in games, film, TV.
The concepts of convergence are not new, but it’s rare that practitioners from film and games are able to meet up and swap notes. A diverse range of major players from these industries including Geomerics, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Natural Motion and Evolution Studios (MotorStorm), Double Negative (The Dark Knight, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince) and Framestore (Casino Royale, Mission Impossible II) will be present to discuss the state of the art in rendering and realism, software, animation and lighting.
In a series of seminars and demos, we hope to look at how far their fields have merged, and whether this has lead to more standardisation, more collaboration, new hybrid practices and innovative working methods.
Skills Week is a week-long series of events designed to raise the skills of game developers and graduates, and will conclude on Friday the 31st with “The C Word”. The day will consist of discussion panels chaired by Pixel-Lab and FDMX, as well as taking questions from the floor. The day will also include a networking lunch.
As places are limited, we will be allocating them for a mix of games, film and TV professionals (including freelancers), so we ask that you email a few words about your current or recent work to events@bafta.org.uk. Please email that information to BAFTA by Thursday 16 October, specifying that you'd like a place for The C Word, and you will be notified by Friday October 17 if you have been allocated a place.

The C Word is part of Skills Week and the London Games Fringe, a festival of alternative gaming events at the end of October 2008, organised by artists, academics, gamers, game developers, educators and creative professionals from a wide range of different media: www.londongamesfringe.com & www.skillsweek.com

Oct 30, 2008: Coding Dojo at 01Zero-One

The Skills Week Coding Dojo, taught by Jez Nicholson from NCsoft, will give participants an introduction to the basics of Agile Development and Adobe Flash. While web games are often overlooked by the mainstream games industry, the number of people playing them is skyrocketing, and the tools for creating them are becoming increasingly powerful.

The Coding Dojo is a workshop where everyone joins in as part of the team. Participants will learn and discuss Agile Development by collaboratively building a game in Flash. A single project is displayed for the whole group to discuss, while students continuously pair up to work 15 minute shifts on the code.
This is a beginner level workshop, and while any Flash Actionscript 3.0 knowledge is welcome, students do not require it to attend. Come to the Coding Dojo and you're sure to pick up the basics.

This workshop costs £5, and places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available now from http://codingdojo.eventbrite.com

Oct 30, 2008: Game Design Workshop at 01Zero-One

Computers are inherently full of distractions, and this remains true when designing games digitally. The opportunity to create graphics, story, effects, scripted events and so forth is always there, distracting creators from the rules of the game.

However, the creation and modding of pen and paper board games has been found to be a very effective focusing tool, forcing you to get right down to the rules and gameplay of a project.

Game design consultant James Wallis will lead you through this one day workshop, going from basic design principles all the way to a playable prototype in one day.

The Skills Week Game Design Workshop will take place on Thursday the 30th of October, at 01zero-one college in Soho.

Jun 29, 2009: Training Course - Technical Aspects of Agile at 01Zero-One

Technical Aspects of Agile – Two-day course
This course is aimed at developers and team leaders who are already familiar with Agile approaches. It deals with three important technical aspects of Agile software development.

Pair Programming. To many people, especially in senior management, pair
programming seems completely counter-intuitive. Surely, by getting two people to do the job of one person you're just halving your productivity? A substantial body of research shows quite the opposite - that pair programming doesn't reduce productivity, but maintains productivity whilst substantially reducing the number of serious defects that are later found in the code. This course covers the very good reasons for introducing pair programming and how to deal with some of the potential objections. It also deals with how to start pair programming - what are the do's and don'ts and provides course participants with some hands-on experience of programming with other people.
Test Driven Development. The practice of writing a failing automatic test for each piece of software functionality that is added to a system, together with a script that can run all of these tests has many beneficial effects on the process of software development. This course gives participants experience of writing tests and then coding against them using the well-known testing framework JUnit.

Re-factoring. As software development progresses on a project, code gets messy and changes in one place cause unexpected problems in others. Re-factoring accepts the reality that code gets messy over time and builds on the advantages of TDD (test-driven development) to allow principled clean up of code. Course participants will be given a chance to clean up the kind of horridly entangled bits of code they might experience and be shown the possible benefits of re-factoring for the ongoing support of the codebase.
Attending this course will allow you to: get hands-on experience of three
important technical aspects of Agile – Pair Programming, Test Driven Development and Refactoring.

Suitable for: Software developers and leaders of software development teams.

Working knowledge of the java programming language required.

May 29, 2009: Training - Introduction to Agile Methods at 01Zero-One

Introduction to Agile Methods – One Day Course

Are you involved in the specification, purchase, project management or delivery of an IT or web-based project? If so, you need to know about Agile methods.

Agile methods, are a group of new techniques which make it easier to deliver IT and web-based projects in environments of uncertainty and constant change. Did you ever try to plan a project but things didn't go quite as you expected? Agile methods are designed to deal with that kind of experience. They emphasise the delivery of projects in short iterations: the end of each iteration, priorities can be re-ordered or new ones can be added making sure that you are always delivering to the client the things that they value most.

This introductory course will give you an immediate feel for the difference that working using Agile techniques can have for the IT projects that you work on.

Attending this course will allow you to:

* Provide the most value in the work that you do for you client.
* Plan your work in short iterations.
* Deal with new and unexpected information and changes as a project progresses.
* Improve your estimates of how long work will take.
* Deliver what you say you'll deliver, when you say you'll deliver it.

Suitable for people working as either a producer or project manger or software developer in any new media or software development environment. Also suitable for
people involved in the specification and procurement of software.

No programming skills required.

Feb 2, 2009: Training Course - Technical Aspects of Agile at 01Zero-One

Attending this course will allow you to: get hands-on experience of three important technical aspects of Agile – Pair Programming, Test Driven Development and Refactoring.

Suitable for: Software developers and leaders of software development teams.

Working knowledge of the java programming language required.

Jan 19, 2009: Training - Introduction to Agile Methods at 01Zero-One
