May 5, 2010: Set it Up: starting your digital consultancy – the basics at University of Westminster

This two-session course will give you all the practical knowledge you need to establish your own digital consultancy to make sure you’re able to concentrate on doing what you do best, and not worrying about which tax forms you need.

NB: This course takes place over two evenings, 6.30-8.30pm; 5th May + 12th May and is being produced at cost only.

So, you’re going it alone as a consultant in the digital industry. Good for you! You have a few clients, or some prospects, you know your trade and you’ve got great skills. But how about the business side of things? Do you know whether you want to set up as a limited company – whether it could save you money and what the other financial implications are? How about expenses, and knowing what you’re reasonably allowed to claim for and what might be a bit too cheeky?

Whether you need to know what documents you need to keep for bookkeeping or what to look for in choosing an accountant, this course will give you all the practical knowledge you need to establish your own digital consultancy to make sure you’re able to concentrate on doing what you do best, and not worrying about which tax forms you need.

The course will cover:

· Ltd company or sole trader? The tax explanations of each, the benefits and costs.

· Getting organised – what to do, when and for who.

· Book-keeping requirements and systems explained in detail.

· What to get from your tax advisor, book-keeper and accountant; ways to ensure you get the best service for you.

· Dealing with the authorities – practical guide to tax forms, paper and all that stuff we all love to hate – setting up, VAT returns and PAYE (including software reviews).

This course is a perfect introduction to setting up your new business, or formalising the freelance work you’ve already been doing. It feeds perfectly into our upcoming half-day session: ‘Step it Up: get your business out of a recession & win new business in 10 days’.

This opening concert in Britten Sinfonia’s lunchtime series focuses on the chamber music of pioneering composer, Harrison Birtwistle, who celebrates his 75th birthday during 2009. Much of Birtwistle’s music has been influenced by Medieval and Renaissance masters. In this performance each contemporary work is juxtaposed by a work by either Bach or a composer of the Middle Ages.
Jan 20, 2010: Britten Sinfonia at Lunch 2 at Wigmore hall

The young firebrand New Yorker, Nico Muhly has devised this programme for Britten Sinfonia’s At Lunch series. Nico Muhly’s influences are wide ranging but he cites early English choral music as one of his particular interests. In this concert we hear his new arrangements of three songs by the Jacobean composer, Orlando Gibbons plus a new work by Muhly himself. Herbert Howells’ Rhapsodic Quintet for clarinet and strings and Copland’s brilliant yet technically demanding Sextet complete the programme.

May 5, 2010: Britten Sinfonia at Lunch 4 at Wigmore hall

BBC New Generation artist, Gwilym Simcock sits at the meeting point of classical and jazz music. Hailed as both a gifted pianist and imaginative composer, Gwilym presents a new work in which he will also perform. Forming the perfect partner to Gwilym’s work Ravel’s Piano Trio has a texture of sound unusually rich for a chamber work and is known for the high level of virtuosity required. Messian’s Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus is a movement from his Quartet for the End of Time, composed while Messiaen was held in a prisoner of war camp.

VIEW ART WORK & ARTIST'S DETAILS >>

This exhibition is the inaugural show for ELEVEN AND A HALF and features recent work by artists closely associated with West Cornwall: John Emanuel, Paul Lewin, John Piper, Michael Praed, Ken Symonds, Ges Wilson and Vincent Wilson. This group of painters includes some of Cornwall’s finest artists, whose work has been exhibited and collected throughout the UK and abroad.

Their work encompasses a broad spectrum of painting styles, from quite abstract figures and nudes, to both semi-abstract and representational landscapes. All are heavily influenced by the moors, mines, cliffs and coves that characterise Penwith, as well as by the legacy left by the Newlyn and St Ives art communities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
ELEVEN AND A HALF is a recently established art dealership based in London and specialising in artists from West Cornwall:

Nov 16, 2009: Darker My Love + Sad Day For Puppets + Four Dead In Ohio at The Borderline

DARKER MY LOVE
Following an American tour with A Place To Bury Strangers, this is the only UK headline show from this acclaimed LA-based five-piece, whose psychedelic wall of noise finds the middle ground between My Bloody Valentine and Can, but with the melodies of The Beatles or The Zombies. Their incredible second album, ‘2’, belatedly got a UK release in the summer. Interestingly, frontman Tim Presley and bassist/singer Rob Barbato are both current members of The Fall.
SAD DAY FOR PUPPETS
Swedish five-piece take a break from their UK dates with A Place To Bury Strangers for this show. Their mix of Dinosaur Jr guitar overdrive and Concretes-style introspection won them rave reviews for their debut album ‘Unknown Colors’ and their new double A- side single ‘When You Tell Me That You Love Me’ and ‘Withering Petals And Dust’ is out today on Sonic Cathedral Recordings.
