Oct 25, 2008: Abingdon OpenStreetMap Micro Mapping Party at Abingdon Tesco

A spontaneous 1-day mapping event for the town of Abingdon, near Oxford. Lunch in a pub or a cafe (perhaps the Spread Eagle at 1ish), maybe a quiet drink in the evening afterwards (Brewery Tap on Ock Street maybe).

OpenStreetMap.org is the free, editable map of the world! Anybody with a bit of computer knowledge and a GPS unit can contribute, but more importantly everyone is allowed do download our data and make useful mashups and beautiful maps which meet their own specific needs under extremely liberal licensing terms. Learn more about us at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/

One type of event we organise to improve the map is what's called a Micro mapping Party, a slightly planned, slightly spontaneous event where a handful of people with GPS units, cameras and scraps of notepaper converge on an area, divide the work between themselves, and map it out thoroughly during the course of a day. Read more at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Micro_Mapping_Party

Why Abingdon? Well, the main roads are done, but there are still voids for the residential areas. We should be able to fix this with a day's quick work!

If you want to join us to help map Abingdon, you'll probably need a GPS unit which records a tracklog and can save it in a form a PC can read. Extras like a digital camera aren't essential, but can help; check out our wiki for details of the bits and pieces you might need. Experienced OSM mappers of course, bring the usual.

Jan 1, 2009: Eccentric Oxford New Years Day Walk at Martyrs’ Memorial

A guided walk around the city revealing the eccentric characters associated with Oxford throughout the centuries.

Tours meet at: Martyrs’ Memorial (opposite Randolph Hotel)

Acquaint yourself with the city’s history, from Danish raiding parties (1007) to exams-are-over parties (2007). Learn about Oxford’s plagues, riots and eccentricities, and how all of Britain’s great universities (plus Cambridge) originated from Oxford’s pioneering model. Hear about Oxford’s eccentrics, scientists, novelists, Prime Ministers, pioneers, actors, inventors, poets, TV stars, criminals and politicians (there is some inevitable cross-over within the last two categories). Enjoy some fascinating facts that we’ve mined about Oxford.

Oct 13, 2008: The Virtual World Exploratorium Project: New findings and future directions at Oxford Internet Institute

Speaker: Professor Dmitri Williams, Assistant Professor, University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication

Professor Williams will present the latest findings from the Virtual Worlds Exploratorium (VWE) Project. Sponsored by the US National Science Foundation, the project uses a unique dataset to study human behaviors within a virtual game world.

With cooperation from Sony Online Entertainment, the VWE team hosts and analyses large behavioral logs collected by the game operator within the world EverQuest 2, and combines these with an original survey dataset. The resulting combination of attitudinal and unobtrusive measures allows for novel tests of human behaviors within the world.

In this talk, Williams will describe the project and present findings from the survey data, early results from the in-world metrics tests, and future directions as the team explores a wide array of social science and humanistic areas.

About the speaker

Dmitri Williams is an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication, where he co-directs the Annenberg Program on Online Communities (APOC). His research is on the social and economic impacts of new media, with a focus on online games.

Professor Williams was the first researcher to use online games for experiments, and was also the first to undertake longitudinal research on video games. In his current work, he is using games to test social science theories on a large scale in game worlds, including tests of economic behavior, group dynamics, trust and communication.

Oct 20, 2008: Making Sense of YouTube at Oxford Internet Institute

Speaker: Jean Burgess, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries & Innovation, Queensland University of Technology, Australia

This presentation reports on a recent study of YouTube that relied principally on a survey of 4300 of the most 'popular' videos, which were categorised according to criteria derived from media and cultural studies approaches to the analysis of media genres and practices.

The analysis produced new knowledge about the extent of particular uses of the platform (such as vlogging, political commentary, or the 'distribution' of broadcast content); and the relationship between different modes of 'audience' engagement (commenting, responding, rating) and particular content genres.

The presentation builds on the findings of the study to discuss the co-existing and competing uses that are actually being made of YouTube - by the media industries, by audiences and amateur producers, and by particular communities of interest; as well as to consider the way that these practices challenge existing understandings of cultural 'production' and 'consumption', and their implications for the uncertain and competing futures of participatory culture online.

About the speaker

Jean Burgess is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries & Innovation, Queensland University of Technology, Australia, where she works on the politics and pragmatics of cultural participation and user-led innovation in new media contexts. Her recent work has included a major study of YouTube in collaboration with Joshua Green (Convergence Culture Consortium/Comparative Media Studies Program, MIT), culminating in the book YouTube: Online Video and Participatory Culture, to be published by Polity Press in 2008/9.

Burgess has developed several applied research partnerships with cultural institutions and community-based organizations, particularly around digital storytelling for cultural participation, advocacy and engagement. She is Reviews Editor of the International Journal of Cultural Studies.

Nov 21, 2008: The Transformation of Academic Publishing in the Digital Era at Oxford Internet Institute

Speaker: Dr Frances Pinter, Publisher at Bloomsbury Academic and Visiting Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Global Governance, London School of Economics

The digital era has created untold opportunities to broaden and deepen academic communications. It has also brought into stark relief questions of public versus private goods as new pressures are put on both for and not for profit publishing operations to be sustainable. The role of academic publishers is being challenged, as the often publicly funded research ends up being funnelled through the channels of the private sector. At the same time the Internet makes it possible to simply bypass conventional publishers altogether, though some lament the loss of the added value brought by professional publishing.

Within this context it is clear that new business models need to be constructed. Frances Pinter brings her experiences both as an academic publisher and an academic researcher herself to bear on the ways in which academic publishing needs to transform itself to respond to the opportunities and challenges of the digital age.

About the speaker

Dr Frances Pinter is the newly appointed publisher at Bloomsbury Academic. She is also Visiting Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Global Governance, London School of Economics, where she is researching into the role of civil society and the intellectual property rights reform agenda. She was the founder of Pinter Publishers, and Publishing Director at the Soros Foundation/ Open Society Institute. She has been a consultant to Creative Commons and is running an IDRC funded project called PALM Africa, that is looking at the role of flexible licensing practices and their potential for publishing in Africa.

Oct 14, 2008: Oxtremists Agile Software Discussion Group at Lamb and Flag

We have decided to change the focus of the group slightly. Our discussions will be around the topic of a book, but we will be discussing the topic and not the book itself, if you see what I mean. In a nutshell, if you are interested in the topic but haven't read the book it really doesn't matter!

This month we'll be talking about Domain Driven Design. The starting point for the discussions will obviously be the concepts in Eric Evans’ book, but as I said, don’t be put off if you haven’t read it. There is a good free introduction to the area in this freely downloadable book available from InfoQ.

Nov 22, 2008: Freestylers + Annie Nightingale at The Regal

breaks breaks breaks featuring the queen of breaks, Annie Nightingale straight from her Radio 1 slot

Freestylers' sound is exactly as their name suggests: a heady blend of brash, hip-hop-inspired grooves resulting in a hypersonic amalgamation that knows no barriers.

The foundation of their music is in breakbeats, and anything can enter the mix: drum & bass, dancehall vocals, house rhythms, electro and hip-hop. Flitting between the grooves of dance, reggae and hip-hop styles, Freestylers craft a raw yet infectious aural melting pot that shakes dance floors and headphones around the globe.

It doesn't get better than this
