Heroes play an integral role in most present and past cultures. This international loan exhibition explores the inherent human need for superhuman and mortal heroes by using ancient Greek culture as one point of origin. Greek history and mythology is especially rich in various kinds of heroes, who are mirrored in present-day culture. Heroes are omnipresent in the arts: approximately 120 Greek statues, reliefs, vases, bronzes, and jewelry will be combined with literary quotes to illustrate their tasks, adversaries, challenges, turning points, and failures in their quests as well as their moments of triumph. Visitors will be asked to name their own personal hero(es) in the form of statements, photos, videos, etc. What makes somebody a hero or heroine, what was expected of them, how were they portrayed and worshiped? This exhibition will explore the inherent human need for heroes by using ancient Greek culture as a point of origin. Greek history and mythology are especially rich in various kinds of heroes, who were represented in the arts, but were also the object of cult, receiving sacrifices and offerings from worshipers who sought their intervention. Statues, reliefs, vases, bronzes and jewelry will be combined with literary quotes to illustrate the life cycle of heroes and heroines with their tasks, adversaries, challenges, turning points and failures as well as their private moments. The exhibition will feature objects from U.S. and European museums as well as pieces from the Walters' collection. Heroes will travel to The Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville from Jan. 29-April 25, 2010, the San Diego Museum of Art from May 22-Sept. 5, 2010 and the Onassis Cultural Center in New York City from Oct. 5, 2010-Jan. 3, 2011. This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Christine Dunbar Sarbanes (1935-2009), a true and abiding hero of our time. Odysseus-like in her commitment to the Walters Art Museum, she was a compassionate advocate for the audiences we strive to serve. The planning and implementation of this exhibition have been generously supported by grants from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. The exhibition catalogue received a leadership grant from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (usa). The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. The presentation in Baltimore has been made possible by the Women's Committee of the Walters Art Museum, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation and generous individual donors. Inspired by the Walters Art Museum's Heroes exhibition and its emphasis on the myths of Herakles, Odysseus, Achilles and Helen, Art on Purpose presents Heroes in Our Midst, a project about modern-day Baltimore individuals who share attributes with the ancient Greek heroes highlighted in the Walters' exhibition. Art on Purpose, an organization dedicated to using art to bring people together around issues and ideas, presents a series of exhibitions and events in partnership with the Walters to explore, uncover and celebrate the lives of contemporary Baltimore heroes. The first exhibition, A Thousand Ships, on view Sept. 16 to Nov. 8, 2009, is based on the heroism of Helen of Troy and will celebrate 12 individuals in Baltimore public schools whose inherent charisma has had life-altering impact on those who come to know them. The second exhibition, Twenty Years of Wandering, on view from Nov. 11, 2009 to Jan. 3, 2010, is about the Odysseus-like heroism it takes for refugees, immigrants and the homeless to survive and thrive in Baltimore. It will feature artwork created by clients of several Baltimore social service organizations that serve the homeless and refugee populations.

Nov 26, 2009: Mummified at The Walters Art Museum

In the spring of 2008, the University of Maryland and the Walters Art Museum performed a CT scan on the Walters' mummy to learn more about the age, possible illness, and cause of death of the person held within the beautifully painted outer wrappings. This special kind of "virtual autopsy" also allowed the investigative team to learn more about the technique of mummification, the construction of the cartonnage, the kind of wrappings used, and the possible presence of amulets within.This focus show will feature approximately 20 ancient Egyptian objects depicting images of mummified people, animals, and deities. A section of the installation will focus on the "Mummimania" of the 17th-20th centuries. Visitors can experience the scientific examination of the Walters' mummy at computer stations in the Level 2 lobby of the Centre Street Building.

Resolve to attend the New Year’s celebration the whole family can stay up for! On Thursday, December 31, 2009, from 10.a.m. to 2 p.m., the Maryland Science Center will host its second annual Midnight Noon daytime New Year’s bash featuring family-friendly activities and entertainment.

National recording artists Milkshake will take the stage with their patented brand of kid’s rock and roll, pausing for the dramatic ball drop at noon. Midnight Noon will also feature the award-winning Blue Sky Puppet Theatre performing their hilarious, cooperation-themed “The 3 (Not So Little) Pigs,” starring Bernard the vegetarian wolf.

Children can also get their faces painted by Fun Faces, and make their own party hats and noisemakers from recycled bottles.
