Nov 25, 2009: iCE Amsterdam 2009 at Gashouder Westergasfabriek

iCE Amsterdam | 25-27 november 2009 | Amsterdam | www.iceamsterdam.com

Bloemendaal, 25 augustus 2009

Nov 13, 2009: Society of the Query at TrouwAmsterdam

The need to create order and find meaning in the gigantic quantity of online data has turned the search engine into our most significant point of reference. In this query driven society, The Society of the Query conference seeks to analyze what impact our reliance on resources to manage knowledge on the Internet has on our culture. For two days, the conference aims to zoom in on some of the essential themes surrounding Web search, by critically analyzing and contextualizing developments in interface design and the organization of knowledge.

The Institute of Network Cultures (INC) seeks to achieve this specifically by uniting researchers, theorists, activists, artists and professionals working in this area, and by creating a platform for not only realized projects and recent research, but also for open questions and speculation.

DAY 1
The conference program consists of five sessions. On the first day, the Society of the Query session will focus on ‘searching’ on the software level and will discuss knowledge organization within the theoretical framework of the humanities and computer science. The Digital Civil Rights and Media Literacy session addresses the intermediary function of search engines and the commercial use and storage of personal data with reference to digital civil rights such as the right to privacy and freedom of expression. The first Alternative Search session responds to a growing interest in alternative methods to search the Web, on the level of the user, the software and the network.

DAY 2
On the second day, the Art and the Engine session discusses the influence of Google’s omnipresence over the production and distribution of Web-based art, and highlights new and progressive developments in interface design that may stimulate the user to search, find and analyze data. Googlization of Everyday Life addresses the hegemony of the larger search engines and the impact of the current division of power on the flow of information, the diversity and accessibility of Web content and the administration of informational sources. Finally, the second Alternative Search session will critically address semantic search developments and their implementation by W3C and European cultural heritage project Europeana.

With a concluding evening program, the INC will do justice to the diversity of artistic and activist projects that examine the role of the search engine in contemporary society.

Conference speakers include Lev Manovich (US), Matthew Fuller (UK), David Gugerli (CH), Siva Vaidhyanathan (US), Florian Cramer (NL), Christophe Bruno (FR), Joris van Hoboken (NL), Teresa Numerico (IT), Yann Moulier Boutang (FR), Matteo Pasquinelli (IT/NL), Ippolita (IT), Cees Snoek (NL), Ingmar Weber (DE), Daniel van der Velden (NL), Alessandro Ludovico (IT), Stefan Weber (DE), Antoine Isaac (NL) and Steven Pemberton (US/NL)

Nov 13, 2009: Workshop Generating VGA Signals at Mediamatic BANK

By using the very simple and cheap PIC Microchip micro-controller it's possible to generate signals. With these signals you can display all kinds of pixel patterns on any VGA monitor or beamer. During the workshop participants will create their own "VGA test box" that will make it possible for you to do the same.

Our Mediamatic Lab colleague and trainer Arjan Scherpenisse was a part-time student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and graduated in July 2009 with an installation consisting of 72 centrally-controlled VGA monitors, using self-built electronics. The workshop is based on this VGA box and the participants will learn how to build one themselves and create fabulous imagery.

How?
The micro-controller will be programmed using the PIC assembly language. However, no assembly coding skills are required, as pre-programmed chips will be available, and participants can create and upload their own image / logo for their test box. Participants do need some soldering skills. The more adventurous participants can use the prepared micro-controller to hook it up to an Arduino or I2C chip, so that the VGA signal can be modified using a more powerful computer. (If you want to do this, please bring your own Arduino or I2C chip)!

Requirements and price:
Soldering experience is handy. Please bring your laptop with some sort of drawing / sketching software! The workshop costs € 30 and includes your VGA box. Please pay in cash at the bar when you arrive. We have a receipt.

Information and registration:
Please register by clicking the 'count me in' button on the webpage. Two weeks before the workshop starts we'll notify you again.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact workshop manager Deborah Meibergen: deborah@mediamatic.net

Nov 20, 2009: Arduino Workshop at Mediamatic BANK

It's been a few years since our last Arduino workshop. But more and more people discover this little miracle board, and they don't know exactly how to use it. That's where we come in!

What?
In this workshop you start from scratch. What is an Arduino, how does it work, how do I program it and how can I integrate it in my work and projects? The day starts with a general introduction. Then we'll look at the hardware aspects of the Arduino, followed by a crash course of programming.

For who?
Artists, art students, computer scientists, hardware hackers, product developers, nerds, dancers - everyone is welcome. However, note that some technical affinity is handy. Some experience in programming and electronics will come in handy specifically in soldering and java, but is not strictly necessary.

Trainer
Ubi de Feo, interaction designer and Arduino expert.

What to bring?
You'll have to bring your own laptop to do your coding. We advise you to download the Arduino software and have a good look at it. Perhaps you can even start with practicing a bit at home. All you need to know is on the website arduino.cc. If there is a specific sensor or actuator you would like to use during the workshop, we advise you to bring it yourself.

Dec 18, 2009: Hacking Open-CI Websites - Empowering the AnyMeta API to make innovative interactive applications at Mediamatic BANK

This workshop is to see what sort of interesting and innovative applications people would build using the AnyMeta API and related technologies.

What?
Mediamatic Lab has created a fascinating collection of social network websites with their CMS AnyMeta. Most of these sites are interconnected using Open-CI, Mediamatic's Open Community Infrastructure, an umbrella-name for a set of specifications which all use Open Standards to create a federation of social networks.

Besides www.mediamatic.net, a few examples of Open-CI-powered sites are:

www.picnicnetwork.org
www.dezwijger.nl
www.depaviljoens.nl
www.ccaa.nl
You can see all the websites made by Mediamatic Lab on their website: www.mediamatic.nl

Arjan Scherpenisse will show you how you can make applications that interface with any AnyMeta website and he talks about the use of Python, Processing and Java libraries to connect to these sites. Examples of applications which integrate with AnyMeta are the ikCam photobooth and the various social rfid games like the installations developed at this year's Social RFID Hacker Camp.

10:00 – 11:30 AnyMeta introduction, Open-CI, API basics
11:30 – 12:30 Break
12:30 – 17:00 Hands-on prototyping sessions

iPhone App
Maarten Wolzak of Magnatron will explain how he built an iPhone App for a new version of the Digital Jewish Monument (another AnyMeta website by Mediamatic Lab). This application will be released in the iPhone AppStore later this year. He will show you how to use the iPhone and the AnyMeta API to interface with Mediamatic.net.

Information and price
Participation cost € 50 incl. VAT.
Please bring your own laptop! We serve coffee and tea with cookies.

The Hacking Open-CI websites lab is a collaboration between Mediamatic and Mediamatic Lab. If you are interested in joining this workshop, please RSVP with the 'count me in' button on the website.
Nov 27, 2009: Treasure Mapping Workshop at Mediamatic BANK

Treasuremapper allows you to trigger mediafiles on a mobile phone depending on where that phone is in real space. It uses GPS to display location-specific images or play location-specific sounds. The goal of Treasuremapper is to create locative media experiences that are easy to make for non-nerdy people.

What?
Locative media help us to link the real and the virtual together, creating what many call a 'hybrid space'. This re-mediation of public space comes with many promises and prophesies. For instance, will we strengthen social bonds through location-based messaging, turning public space into space 2.0? Will we create safe and healthy communities through environmental monitoring?

This workshop explores these and other questions. It offers:

- An overview of the current state-of-the-art experiments in this field: from mobile and 'big' games to streamlined shopping and social experiences. From military initiatives to artistic reflections.
- A critical theoretic perspective on locative visions of the future: which parties are invested in this idea, and how do they envision this locative future? How can these visions be critically understood?
- A hands-on experience of locative media: users can try and, more importantly, create locative experiences during the workshop, using the new open-source Treasuremapper tool.
- Experiencing the concept first-hand is a hard to overestimate experience which can be both sobering and exhilarating.

For who?
The workshop is relevant to the interests of experience designers, architects, city planners, marketeers, students and any other field where creative media-augmentation of our daily surroundings is of interest.

What is the outcome?
Participants are invited to work on a concept of their own in which they position themselves in the landscape, metaphorically as well as literally. Using the media-tools provided they develop a prototype of their idea. The experience of these prototypes is a lot of fun.

What's so nice about Treasuremapper?
- It's based on the hip Python programming language, so it works on a lot of phones, including older models. This makes Treasuremapper cheap and accessible to a lot of people.
- It's open source, meaning you can change it easily, or you can find a nerd to do it for you without too much hassle. It also means it's free!
- It doesn't need mobile internet to work (but if you do have that, you get extra options).
- It should work with most if not all Bluetooth GPS devices.

Trainer
The workshop is run by Tijmen Schep, founder of the NetNiet.org Foundation which promotes wireless media art in public space. He has a MA in Media Design as well as Media Sociology, and has extensive knowledge about locative media.

What to bring?
You need a smartphone with bluetooth or with an internal GPS, and it should run the Symbian S60 operating system. If your phone is in this list you're almost certainly good to go. If your phone doesn't have a built-in GPS, you will need an external GPS device that can talk to your phone through bluetooth.
And of course your laptop and a digital camera.

Price is € 50 inc. VAT. Please register by clicking the 'count me in' button on the website and we will notify you 2 weeks before the workshop starts.
