Sep 4, 2008: LIFT Asia 08 at International Convention Center Jeju Island

LIFT Asia 08, a three-day event taking place in Korea on September 4, 5 and 6, will offer inspiring talks and activities to look into the future of our networked society.

The Internet is now part of our society, innovation goes incremental and the important Web breakthroughs are behind us (email, IM, social software, etc.). Pioneers are moving to new frontiers but what are the upcoming changes? Which domains will be soon influenced by technological developments? What will be the new relationships between upcoming technologies and sociability? How will different cultures react to this? LIFT Asia 08 will address these questions by looking at fields such as virtual money, new forms of social media, networked cities, digital nomadism and the new breeds of robots.

Nov 4, 2008: Global HR Forum 2008 at InterContinental Grand Hotel Seoul

Due to global sourcing and cross-border workforce mobility, the development of globally competitive human resources has now become a necessity, not a matter of choice, for all. Global competence is the key issue for all international organizations, governments, enterprises and individuals, because today, literally everyone is competing and cooperating on a global basis, not just a few talented people. Indeed, qualified human resources serve as the major building block for the betterment of individuals, corporations and societies, and ultimately shared global prosperity. This recognition is calling for a common worldwide effort to develop and utilize competent human resources, not to mention stronger collaboration between governments, enterprises and educational institutions.
It was upon this understanding of the necessity of an international HRD approach that the Government of Korea inaugurated the Global Human Resources Forum in 2006, in collaboration with the private sector. The 1stt Global HR Forum, held in November 2006, brought together over 2,500 global leaders from the public and private sector including international organizations and presidents of leading universities around the world, to share innovative approaches and search for better HRD solutions. Key contributors included Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft, Paul Wolfowitz, Chairman of the World Bank, high-ranking officials from the OECD and UNESCO, Bertel Haarder, Minister of the Danish Education Ministry, and Robert Barro, Professor at Harvard University.

The 2nd Global HR Forum opened in November 2007 with video messages from Bill Clinton, former President of the U.S., Oscar Arias Sanchez, President of Costa Rica and Ban, Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General. Special addresses were delivered by over 150 prominent global leaders from 35 countries including Richard Holbrooke, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Jerome Glenn, executive director of the WFUNA, Francis Fukuyama, Professor of Johns Hopkins University, Ben Verwaayen, President of BT, and CEO/CHOs from Goldman Sachs, BMW, Boeing, Walt Disney and Changi International Airport. The 2007 saw increased participation of high-level government officials including the Minister of the Sudanese Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry, Minister of the Iraqi Higher-Education Ministry, and Deputy Minister of the Bulgarian Education and Science Ministry. Also contributing to discussions was the Director of the OECD Directorate of Education, Head of the Higher Education Team at the World Bank, and Secretary General of ALECSO. With the attendance of more than 4,000 participants, the Forum firmly established itself as a ‘venue for meeting and communication,’ where knowledge and insights on global HRD cooperation are shared effectively and extensively.

Continuing the success of past gatherings, the Government of Korea plans to hold the 3rd Global HR Forum in Seoul from Tuesday November 4 to Thursday November 6 2008, under the theme of ‘Creative Talents for Global Collaboration’. A diversity of specific topics will be discussed including higher education innovation for the nurturing of creative talents, corporate evolution and human resources management, public sector roles in HRD, and international cooperative efforts for talent development. In-depth sessions will also be prepared for global experts to seek ways for the efficient accumulation and distribution of creative experiences. The Government of Korea again looks forward to an exciting and highly productive three-day discussion, where global wisdom will be shared on ‘what we must do for the development and utilization of creative global talents,’ ‘how we may effectively implement those tasks’ and ‘how we must promote global cooperation towards the goal of shared prosperity’.

Sep 21, 2008: Devices that Alter Perception (DAP 2008) at Conference & Exhibition Center - COEX, Seoul

Devices that Alter Perception 2008 (DAP 2008) September 21st, 2008 in Seoul, Korea. This workshop is organized in conjunction with UbiComp 2008.

- June 27th, 2008: Deadline for paper submission
- July 25th, 2008: Author acceptance notification

Sensors, actuators, implants, wearable computers, and neural
interfaces can do more than simply observe our bodies; these devices
can alter and manipulate our perceptions. This workshop will promote
design and critique of systems with the explicit intent of altering
the human percepts. Participants will be asked to present position
papers or demonstrations concerning devices that act on phenomena
related to the process of perception. The goals of the workshop are
to: (1) better understand the process of perception (2) aid those
developing devices by sharing designs (3) debate of ethical and social
issues that are unique to devices that operate below or upon
awareness.

Sep 4, 2008: LIFT Asia at Jeju International Convention Center

One of the most innovative global events - called "one of the highlights of the technophile calendar by the BBC" - is coming to Korea for the second time on September 4, 5 and 6, 2008. Lift is a unique experience focusing on networking and inspiration, featuring inspiring talks and activities to look into the future of our networked society. The conference - which will be simultaneously translated in Korean and English - will raise an important question: what happens after the web browser?

At the end of a decade during which the internet revolutionized our lives and organizations, the network is now moving beyond the computer screen, invading objects, cities, toys, cars or medical devices. Where will the next big changes happen? What are the world's most innovative people working on right now?

Lift Asia will gather the global community of doers and thinkers in partnership with organizations like Daum, the Nabi Art Center, or the Jeju Knowledge Promotion Agency. The event will feature:

• Talks covering topics like urban technologies, online worlds, virtual money, new lifestyles or robots, featuring speakers like Joonmo Kwon (CEO of Nexon, the world's largest online games company), networked cities visionaries Jeffrey Huang (EPFL), Yang Soo Yin (The Living) and Adam Greenfield (Nokia design), I-mode inventor Takeshi Nastuno and fellow innovator Tomoaki Kasuga who works on the robots of the future, Gadget loving and Emmy award winning American guru Dan Dubno, and legendary speakers like Bruce Sterling (initiator of Cyberpunk), Bruno Bonnell, Frédéric Kaplan or Jan Chipchase.

• Interactive art installations curated by Nabi Art Center, creating a unique experience based on inspiring and engaging activities divided in four zones: opening, sharing, sparkling and expanding zones.

• Community speeches where participants can freely present their works and ideas inside one of the open rooms.

The full program is available here:
http://www.liftconference.com/lift-asia-08/program
