Aug 10, 2008: Second Skin at Filmhouse

Second Skin takes an intimate, disturbing look at three sets of computer gamers whose lives have been transformed by the emerging genre of computer games called Massively Multiplayer Online games, or MMOs. World of Warcraft, Second Life and Everquest allow millions of users to interact simultaneously in virtual spaces.

Second Skin introduces viewers to couples who have fallen in love without meeting, disabled players whose lives have been given new purpose, men who have trouble distinguishing between the real and virtual worlds, Chinese gold-farming sweatshop workers, wealthy entrepreneurs and legendary guild leaders – all living within a world that doesn't quite exist.

Jul 26, 2008: Flickr Scotland July Meet at Pittenweem Harbour

Saturday
We meet up at 11.00am at Pittenweem Harbour and wander round there for a couple of hours. I am proposing that we bring our own lunches with us and eat outside (weather permitting.)
After lunch we can go to Anstruther, the most touristy of the villages and wander along to Cellardyke on foot ending up at the pig farm.
I would suggest parking at the carpark at the Co-op and walking down and if we can be organised enough we might see if we can get a couple of cars at the Cellardyke end to ferry drivers back.
I am still musing over the evening meal, but what we could do is get some of the famous fish and chips for our evening meal. The downside of that is that it probably would involve long queues and it doesn’t have enough seats to sit us all at the same time. Any thoughts on this?
For those with stamina, I would suggest going along to Elie for the sunset – you can get some nice shots over the bay.
For everyone else I suggest we find a pub, there are a quite a few. I will be seeking local knowledge this week on the best.

Sunday
As is usual I was going to leave this a bit looser, but what I would suggest would be Crail and Kellie Castle.

Wet weather plans would involve the Fisheries Museum and the Secret Bunker.

brought to you by Viche
He now follows it with The Dark Volume, equally alluring and unconventional. Austrian Thomas Glavinic’s Night Work is an eerily compulsive philosophical mystery about aman who wakes entirely alone – the last living being on the planet.

Aug 27, 2008: International Conference: Public Participation and Corporate Social Responsibility: from why to how at University of Strathclyde

The need to bring the public into the strategic development plans of major organisations is becoming more of a political necessity with every passing day. For the first time ever, the business and service sectors are bound by both legal and informal protocols of public participation.

There are many commercial, municipal and voluntary sector organisations that need to bring public participation into the heart of their practice. From anecdotal evidence, few would seem to be skilled at promoting that process with any degree of success. This conference, and the training festival associated with it, are designed to address any skill or knowledge gap that may exist.

This conference will attract internationally renowned speakers, those with citizen engagement experience and those people who are spearheading research, policy development and practice in public engagement.

The conference will help delegates to interrogate new and emerging relationships between citizens and corporations. Those in business, banking, legal, government, industrial, the armed forces as well as the public and voluntary sectors (amongst many others) will find attendance stimulating and useful. The principal focus of the conference will be the interface zone between the corporate sector (however defined) and civil society. It will interrogate difficult and new pathways to the future.

This will be an interactive conference. There will be a mixture of academic and practical sessions, keynote addresses and world café discussions. Delegates will be asked to bring a willingness to engage and to problem solve. Additionally, there will be case study presentations and visits to demonstration projects. Wrapped around the conference will be an IAP2 training event for delegates to upgrade their qualifications (should they wish) in public participation processes. This training will be provided by international trainers of extremely high calibre.
