It's become an annual tradition in Tomball. Every year, on the last
Weekend in March, festival-goers break out their Lederhosen and Dirndls
"Go German" for the area's largest festival celebrating the heritage of the original German settlers in our area. In other words in the case of German heritage there is much to celebrate in this part of Texas!

The 10th Annual Tomball German Heritage Festival will be March 26,27,28, 2010 located on the Old Downtown Streets of Tomball Texas near 201 S. Elm Street, Main Street (FM 2920), and Market Street. It is a Music/Street festival celebrating German and ethnic heritage with 4 stages of live music entertainment "happy music for happy people", ethnic and festival food, beer, wine, 150 street vendors, all kinds of German souvenirs and clothing, arts crafts, antiques, Heritage Center, German church service, fireworks, carnival, pony ride, petting zoo, strolling music makers, street performers, and much more. Like Oktoberfest in March! Huge fun for the whole family! You do not have to be German to enjoy this festival. It is fun for everyone, and one of the best street festivals in Texas. Willkommen! No admission or parking fees.

The Carnival opens Thursday evening March 25th with a special price for the "all you can ride" armband, and is located at the corner of Main and Cherry.

On Friday 26th at 6pm till 10pm the music begins featuring Bluegrass Friday Night, Alpenfest, Chris Rybak, Walburg Boys, Tuba Meisters, Round Top Brass Band, Das Ist Lustig, Terry Cavanaugh, Kenny James, JungeMeisters, German Folk Dancers Rathkamp, de Texas KlopenDansers (Dutch), Scandinavian Folk Dancers, Aggie Wranglers, Cloggers on the Move, Tomball Promanaders, Czech music makers, Valina and much more.

Saturday 27th 10am till 10pm begins with the "tapping of the keg",
awards ceremony for German exchange students and Tomball host families, and official opening by the Mayor of Tomball Gretchen Fagan. The music and dancing goes all day and into the night, and at 9pm a beautiful fireworks display at Tomball's newly restored Train Depot Plaza on the festival grounds.

Sunday 28th 10am till 6pm begins with German Church Service/Brother Christen Tiews of St. Louis, Mo. The Biergartens open at noon on Sunday and the celebration goes on. You are all invited to come on out to Tomball German Heritage Festival for a really great time.

University of St. Thomas Music Department will sponsor the Monaghan Organ Recital at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 in the Chapel of St. Basil, 3802 Yoakum, Houston, TX 77006. The featured organist is James Frazier, who is the music director at St. John’s Episcopal Church in St. Paul, Minn.

Fr. Francis E. Monaghan, CSB, was an important member of the UST community for 43 years. He was a music lecturer, and his legacy lives on in this annual organ recital.

The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Moran Center, 3807 Graustark at W. Alabama, for $2.

The University of St. Thomas Center for Irish Studies Cultural Outreach Forum and Music
Department present “David and Kieran Munnelly Live in Concert” from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
Nov. 18, 2009, in Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon, Houston, TX 77006. David will play the button accordion, and Kieran will play the flute and bodhrán.

David Munnelly, Irish button accordionist, played with The Chieftains, DeDanaan and other Irish artists before forming his own band, The David Munnelly Band, in 2002. David composed and recorded the original soundtrack for the TG4 Irish television special “Solas sa nDorchadasm” for which he received the 2004 “Composer of the Year Award.” He was also honored with the 2005 “Composer of the Year Award” and named “Best Traditional Artist 2005” by LiveIreland.com and the Irish American News. In 2006, his band received the “Concert of the Year Award” from the Irish American News. The David Munnelly Band has just released a new album, recorded in July 2009 in Spiddal County, Galway, Ireland - Tight Squeez! - on sale in the United States in September 2009. Since the age of seven, Irishman Kieran Munnelly has played music. Kieran has toured exclusively with The David Munnelly Band, but has played with other Irish musicians such as Matt Molloy, Martin O’Connor, Kieran Goss and Francis Black. Additionally, Kieran has toured extensively through the United States and Europe with The David Munnelly Band. He graduated from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick, with a B.A. in Irish Music Performance in 2007 and with an M.A. in 2009.

The world’s worst poetry will be read at the annual University of St. Thomas Shadwell’s Wake to honor one of the English world’s most awful poets at 8 p.m.-12 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 at Malloy Hall, 3815 Mt. Vernon, Houston, TX 7006.

Thomas Shadwell was a 17th century poet laureate of England, known for his horrible poetry. The English Department satirically named its former location, a house located on Mt. Vernon, after Shadwell. Students believed the dead poet haunted the house, so in the 70s, students organized Shadwell’s Wake as a joke to celebrate Shadwell’s bad poetry, and was the English Department’s yearly party.

Now, the entire UST and Houston community are invited to participate in the yearly bad poetry contest which awards equally bad prizes. This year, local band The Sideshow Tramps will perform, and food and drink will be provided. Students 21 and up bring IDs.

MacGregor Elementary School students will perform songs they created in a weeklong Kid Pan Alley music residency program. Then, Miller Theatre joins the Houston Cinema Arts Festival with a special screening of "Peter Pan," the original 1924 film considered one of the most beloved film spectaculars of the Silent Era. Legendary silent film accompanists Donald Sosin and Joanna Seaton and Kid Pan Alley music director Paul Reisler perform their own score with vocals, keyboard and percussion.
