GO BACK IN TIME FOR TWO NIGHTS ONLY AT THE TODD’S REUNION NIGHTS!

Travel back in time to the decade of decadence- the‘80s-this holiday season to revisit a Detroit dance club that was the epitome of ‘80s glory. Todd’s, formally known as Todd’s Sway Lounge, was a gay nightclub on Detroit’s far eastside that was on the cutting edge of the new wave of eighties music and lifestyle.

Detroit club impresario- Stirling, first approached the owners of the venue in 1983 and convinced them to try out a dance music night on Monday evenings to cater to a growing subculture of club kids. The owners welcomed this idea, and a new dance party was launched. Stirling hired the eclectic DJ Charles English to spin the latest in dance music, Euro-pop, new wave and even some punk classics and funk gems thrown into the explosive mix of music that had the patrons up and dancing the night away. When Monday nights became thee popular weekly destination, they expanded to Thursday nights as well. The nightclub was one-of-a-kind as it featured more than just a dance floor. A basement theater was dubbed “the video coffin” that showed cult films and videos courtesy of host Kory Clarke (later of the band Warrior Soul), upstairs featured Benson’s couture clothing boutique called “Transvestia Dementia” (and later turned into a record store run by Michael Fiscus) and the vintage clothing/record store/ art gallery called “Chaos,” run by promoter Sue Static. The Todd’s dance parties became a main component of ‘80s subculture here in the city. The party lasted for almost a decade, up until the club changed ownership in the early ‘90s.

There will be two Todd’s reunion nights coming up on Saturday, November 28 and Wednesday, December 23 for patrons of the club to revisit the music and friends of this era. The reunions are hosted by Stirling and Sue Static and feature DJ Charles English spinning the familiar tunes that had you dancing decades ago. The nights will feature drink specials of the drinks that the bar made famous, photo collages from that era and online access to chat with Todd’s fans across the country. One special out of town guest returning for the reunion is Benson. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit MAPP (Midwest AIDS Prevention Project) in honor of the many Todd’s employees.

GuyWriters, the only gay men’s writing group in San Francisco, presents “More Than Words: Poetry, Prose and Plays Fight AIDS.” The World AIDS Day event on December 1 will feature members of GuyWriters reading original works on the topic of HIV/AIDS. Best-selling author Kemble Scott will be the night’s special guest.

To commemorate World AIDS Day, donations will be collected at the door. All proceeds for the reading will go to San Francisco’s Stop AIDS Project.

The night will feature the work of GuyWriters members, including Derek Lassiter, Mac McNamara, Vincent Meis, Eric Rose, Alan Quismorio and James J. Siegel. Poetry, fiction and playwriting will all be represented at the reading.

The night will culminate with a reading from special guest Kemble Scott. Scott is a San Francisco resident and author of two novels. He is also a columnist for a special San Francisco edition of the New York Times. His most recent novel, “The Sower,” takes place in San Francisco, and tells the story of a man who becomes the carrier of a supervirus that can cure all diseases. The catch is that this supervirus can only be transmitted through sex. The story unravels as a thriller and page turner, and puts the protagonist in the middle of a new culture war.

The show will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. There will be a $5 to $10 suggested donation at the door.

Two patients recently came to me and asked for assistance and advice for caring for their cancer. As a chiropractor I cannot treat cancer. But, as a chiropractor, licensed in physiotherapy and nutritional counseling I am able to help patients through difficult times.

Cancer thrives in dirty, acidic internal environments. Those that are able to change their internal environments to a more healthy clean, oxygenated situation may stop or reverse the progression of the disease. These are outcomes we all want.

To help change and improve their internal environment we made simple dietary changes focusing on what foods to eat and what not to eat. This is called nutritional counseling. One patient is a vegetarian and the other eats a more traditional meat and vegetable diet. Suggestions were made and implemented. So we were off to a good start. Some foods feed cancer, you need to know about those and avoid them.

We also spoke about exercise. Exercise is important as you must exercise to eliminate toxins and to better oxygenate your body. You cannot be healthy without exercising. One patient has an acceptable exercise program, the other never exercised. For her we developed a passive exercise program. Passive exercise are activities she was willing to do that typically are not associated with exercise but provide the benefits of exercise. The best exercise for you is the one that you do.

In my office we designed a therapy program using chiropractic, physiotherapy modalities and massage to heat and warm the body and to thin and move stagnant toxic lymph and wastes. When your lymph is stagnant you are sick so we want to clean it up. We use a series of six separate but synergistic treatments taking over an hour to complete and throughout it is a very pleasurable relaxing experience. This therapy program is very similar for both patients. They stop in once per week for care. Again, the purpose of the therapy is to help the body purge toxins, increase oxygenation to the tissues, improve nerve conduction and to help you relax.

How do we know if progress is being made. Subjectively, patients tell me how they feel and any changes that they notice. Objectively, and this is very important and unique, we track patient phase angle. Phase angle is an indication of the health of body cell membranes. With ill health the cell membrane fails, allowing leakage of the cell’s contents. This measurement is a proven objective method for accurately tracking a persons health and is used in many hospitals and health clinics. It has been used world wide for decades. It has passed the test of time...as it provides really good information. When your phase angle is increasing your body is healing. When your phase angle is decreasing, your body is becoming more sick and weak. Anyone with a chronic disease like cancer, AIDS, diabetes, heart disease, etc. should be tracking their progress using phase angle measurement. It objectively answers the question "am I getting better" more accurately than any other procedure or test. Better yet, the test is non invasive.

Stern invites fans and newcomers alike into his rich and diverse little corner of the world with the August 11, 2009, worldwide release of Big Neighborhood (HUCD 3157) on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group. Aiding Stern in this latest chapter of his never-ending quest for the new and better groove is a long list of talented guests: guitarists Steve Vai and Eric Johnson; bassist-vocalists Esperanza Spalding and Richard Bona; jamband godfathers Medeski Martin & Wood; drummers Dave Weckl, Terri Lyne Carrington, Cindy Blackman and Lionel Cordew; bassists Chris Minh Doky and Lincoln Goines, and several others.

With a crew this large and diverse, the idea of the album title should be pretty clear, says Stern. “Music is like a big neighborhood – a place where anything and everything can happen,” he explains. “You can find all kinds of things in a big neighborhood – all kinds of different people, all kinds of different ideas and perspectives, and of course, all kinds of different sounds.”

With all of this going on in a single recording, Stern’s primary objective was to capture the energy as live as possible, with few if any overdubs. This was no easy task, as a few of the artists had schedules that prohibited meeting in a central location. Consequently, while Stern was able to record a good part of the album in his hometown of New York City, he had to travel (with rhythm section) to Austin, Texas to record with Eric Johnson, and then to Los Angeles to record with Steve Vai and Dave Weckl. In the end, the album’s eleven tracks came together in a neighborhood that spans two coasts with a stop in the Lone Star State.

“This record is in a lot of places – not just in terms of where it was recorded, but in the various voices and styles that are represented,” says Stern. “There’s jazz here, there’s rock, there’s Latin, there are elements of Middle Eastern music. I dig records like that. Basically, I guess the thread that hopefully holds all this together is the fact that I wrote all the tunes on this project, I play on all of them, and the concept of how all this fits together is mine with some great help from the guy that produced the record, Jim Beard. I hear it when I’m writing. I’ll think, ‘This song has kind of an African groove, so I should get Richard Bona to play on it,’ or ‘This song has a melodic groove, which is perfect for Esperanza.’ I just follow my instincts and pick the tunes that will all work together on one record, and will show off what each person can do.”
