Jul 22, 2009: Exhibition - Peaks of Faith: Buddhist Art of the Himalayas at Philadelphia Museum of Art

The masterpieces in this exhibition encompass nearly a millennium of art from across the Himalayan region (centered on Tibet and Nepal) and from neighboring areas under its cultural influence. The works on view range from a sublime North Indian bronze Ratnasambhava Buddha of about the eleventh century to the monumental and gruesome eighteenth-century painting Banquet for Dharmapalas with Mount Meru from Mongolia. Each of these works was created for the specific type of Buddhism that developed in the area, often called Vajrayana (the indestructible path). Using an elaborate array of symbolically potent images of buddhas, deities, and holy men as well as words and actions, practitioners of Vajrayana evoke within themselves the steps leading toward enlightenment. Whether in metal, paint, or wood, whether beautiful or terrifying, simple or intricate, each is dense with meaning, for each was created as a guide to aid progress along the indestructible path. Curator: Darielle Mason - The Stella Kramrisch Curator of Indian and Himalayan Art. Ticket Prices: Adult - $24.00. Seniors - $22.00. Students, and Youth (ages 13-18) - $20.00. Children (ages 5-12) - $14.00. Museum Members, Children 4 and under - Free. Location: Gallery 232, second floor.

Jul 24, 2009: Rent - Musical at Weekend Theater

Book, Music and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Rent is a rock opera which is Generation Xs ampli ed update of Puccinis La Boheme and is the seventh longest-running show in Broadway history. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians, struggling to survive and create in New Yorks Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS. While including themes of homelessness, drug addiction, hunger, sickness, multiculturalism, homophobia, and AIDS, nonetheless, this invigorating and exuberant musical has the sweet spirit of a kids show. Its message of hope and love continues to inspire young people who are trying to nd their personal passions in a world they dont necessarily respect, and its unifying thread is a stubborn insistence on a life that rises above the commonplace and an existence that maintains some semblance of integrity and dignity over time. Directed by John Thompson, Music Direction by Lori Isner.

Jul 22, 2009: Exhibition - From Plaster to Stone at Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum

Beginning in the 1940s, Isamu Noguchi began using small paper models as an aid in creating his larger biomorphic sculptures. Noguchi continued this practice for the rest of his career, using plaster maquettes to envision larger stone or metal works, often including penciled instructions on them to guide different technical effects. In this small exhibition created in conjunction with The Noguchi Museums Education Department, a selection of Noguchis maquettes is presented with photographs and finished sculptures to illustrate both Noguchis faithfulness to his original ideas and his flexibility in response to the unpredictable nature of stone. Museum Admission: Museum admission is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students with a valid ID. Members, New York City public high school students with a valid ID, and children under 12 are free. On the first Friday of every month, Museum admission is pay what you wish.

Mrs. Palfrey At the Clairmont-Mrs. Palfrey, recently widowed after a long happy marriage, moves into a London residential hotel more lively and elegant on line than in fact. She determines to make the best of it among an odd assortment of people, and she particularly hopes her grandson, a London resident, will visit. When she slips on a walk and is aided by a penniless young writer, she invites him to dine at the Claremont and plays along when her dining mates assume he's her grandson. A friendship develops giving her a companion with whom she can talk about memories and poetry and giving him ideas and support for his writing. But what of August 20, 5:00-Muriel's Wedding-Muriel finds life in Porpoise Spit, Australia dull and spends her days alone in her room listening to Abba music and dreaming of her wedding day. Slight problem, Muriel has never had a date. Then she steals some money to go on a tropical vacation, meets a wacky friend, changes her name to Mariel, and turns her world upside down. Rated R for sex-related dialogue and some sexuality. Monthly, Every Third Thursday

Jul 8, 2009: Mortal Transfer - Diva at Egyptian Theater

Jean-Jacques Beineix Double Feature: Los Angeles Premiere! Mortal Transfer (Mortel Transfert), 2001, Cinema Libre, 122 min. Overwhelmed psychoanalyst Michel (Jean-Hugues Anglade) falls asleep while listening to sado-masochist kleptomaniac patient Olga (Helene de Fougerolles) and awakens to find her strangled. Panicking, he decides to get rid of her body himself, lest he be saddled with her murder. Complications erupt when Olga's rich husband (Yves Renier) comes looking for stolen money and Michel's other neurotic patients clamour for attention. Director Jean-Jacques Beineix keeps a mesmerizing balance on a tightrope between poisonously dark comedy and psychological thriller. This is another of Beineix's films almost impossible to see in America since its original European release. (Screened from a digital source) "Beineix is...aiming for the sort of darkly comic details and plausibly presented incongruities favored by, say, the Coen brothers...there is a methodical genre-bending at work that draws much inspiration from the 'wrong man' school of film noir...Widescreen results are sumptuous in a perfectly controlled, borderline surreal register...the level of craft is still unmistakable..." - Lisa Nesselson, Variety Not On DVD Diva, 1981, Rialto Pictures, 123 min. Director Jean-Jacques Beineix scored a bull's-eye internationally at arthouse box offices with his debut film, a deftly constructed souffle of a suspense thriller with a comic, tongue-in-cheek tone. Postman and opera fanatic Jules (Frederic Andrei) surreptitiously records his idol, diva Cynthia (Wilhemenia Wiggins Fernandez), and is so overcome by her performance that he steals her costume from her dressing room, which causes a scandal. Later, while on his rounds, he encounters two thugs beating up a woman and is the unwitting recipient of a blackmail tape that the victim sneaks into his letter bag. Soon the chase is on, with not only the hoods (including Dominic Pinon) but also Taiwanese music bootleggers hoping to steal his opera cassette. Before things come to a head, Jules befriends singer Cynthia and is aided in his escape from danger by a teenage Vietnamese street girl and a sophisticated mystery man (Richard Bohringer). "...One of the best thrillers of recent years but, more than that, it is a brilliant film, a visual extravaganza that announces the considerable gifts of its young director, Jean-Jacques Beineix...Filled with so many small character touches, so many perfectly observed intimacies, so many visual inventions, from the sly to the grand, that the thriller plot is just a bonus... Pauline Kael has compared Beineix to Orson Welles and, as Welles so often did, he has made a movie that is a feast to look at, regardless of its subject." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
The Marathon des Sables is 150-mile race, divided in 6 stages over a 7-day period. The race is a self-sufficient race, which means participants must carry their own food for the entire event, sleeping bags, and any other supplies that they might need. The water, however, is provided at regular checkpoints during the day. The Dreamchasers Foundation is dedicated to raising funds to help women and children in need.
Jul 18, 2009: Under Our Skin (2008) at The State Theater

HTML clipboard 104 Minutes Directed by Andy Abrahams Wilson A dramatic tale of microbes, medicine & money, this eye-opening film investigates the untold story of Lyme disease, an emerging epidemic larger than AIDS. Each year thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, told that their symptoms are "all in their head." Following the stories of patients and physicians as they battle for their lives and livelihoods, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of our health care system and its inability to cope with a silent terror under our skin. In the early 1970's, a mysterious ailment was discovered among children living around the town of Lyme, CT. What was first diagnosed as isolated cases of juvenile arthritis, eventually became known as Lyme disease, an illness triggered by spiral-shaped bacteria, similar to the microorganisms that cause syphilis. Today, many of those untreated will suffer chronic debilitating illness. Some unknowingly will pass the disease on to their unborn children. Many will lose their livelihoods, and still others, their lives. Under Our Skin is a powerful and often terrifying look not only at the science and politics of the disease, but also the personal stories of those whose lives have been affected and nearly destroyed. From a few brave doctors who risk their medical licenses, to patients who once led active lives but now can barely walk, the film uncovers a hidden world that will astound viewers. While exposing a broken health care and medical research system, the film also gives voice to those who believe that instead of a crisis, Lyme is simply a "disease du jour," over diagnosed and contributing to another crisis: the looming resistance of microbes and ineffectiveness of antibiotics. As suspenseful and hair-raising as any Hollywood thriller, Under Our Skin is sure to get under yours. Country of Origin: U.S. Language: English *includes box office fee Cost: $8*, $6* Students and Seniors Age Restriction: Not Rated Type: Film
