ARE YOU A LEGO ARCHITECT? COME PLAY WITH HOMELESS CHILDREN! Did you know: at least 1 out of every 24 Massachusetts children is homeless at any given time? An even higher proportion of Massachusetts children experience homelessness over the course of a year, for a total of at least 82,000 homeless children and youth in the Bay State.
Nov 18, 2009: Genuine Confidence at Shambhala Meditation Center of Boston

Genuine Confidence

with Adam Lobel

November 18 / 7:00 PM - November 18 / 9:00 PM

Price: $5 Members ($5 General Public)

In our lives we encounter fear, depression, laziness and suffering. Rousing our natural ability to radiate genuine confidence is simple and available to us through the practice of meditation. As we practice and work with our minds and hearts, we discover fearlessness, an uplifted mind, natural energy, and ultimately a sense of joy. These experiences of ease with our world are an expression of genuine confidence, and the more we choose to cultivate this, the more we are able to be of benefit to others throughout our lives.

Join us for this special opportunity to hear Acharya (teacher) Adam Lobel at our weekly Open House. The evening will begin with guided meditation for everyone, so come and be prepared to encounter your mind and heart (enlightenment not necessarily guaranteed, but then again, you never know).

He teaches meditation to youths within the prison system and a mental health institution. He was named an Acharya in 2004 and completed a Masters of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School, where he is helping to establish a track for Buddhist ministers and chaplains. His research focuses on philosophy, phenomenology, meditation, and the Great Perfection tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Adam has a seven-year-old son, Javin, who is a Jedi Knight in training and recently moved to Pittsburgh, PA.

Nov 21, 2009: Smiling at Fear at Shambhala Meditation Center of Boston

Smiling at Fear

with Adam Lobel

November 21 / 9:00 AM - November 21 / 5:00 PM

Price: $50 Members ($75 General Public)

The Shambhala teachings allow us to face and rise above fear. Through meditation and other contemplative methods, we can all train in opening our awareness and our heart without hesitation. The path means directly looking at fear with gentleness and intelligence---smiling at fear. This leads to unconditional confidence, or basic human genuineness without hesitation. This workshop is open to new and advanced students alike.

Based upon the forthcoming book "Smiling at Fear" by Chögyam Trungpa.

Nov 16, 2009: "The Body" for Justice. POV: Body Image at Sweetwater Cafe

Join Socializing for Justice for our discussion group: "The Body" for Justice. POV: Body Image* on Monday, November 16th, 6:00pm at Sweetwater Cafe by Boylston T stop.

To connect to "the work" and each other in more intentional ways, SoJust is hosting monthly discussion groups focused on "The Body" through various points of view (POV). This is a place for us to explore what we have in common and where we differ on topics that are important to us. This is not a seminar - there will be no presentation - come with questions you'd like to explore. We'll creatively use the space: smaller groups to focus on specific topics, pairing up and popcorn questions. Join us to learn more about yourself and other SoJusters!

So you know what to expect here's what we have planned:
6pm Socializing - order dinner/drinks (30 min)
6:30 Gather in large circle for introductions (30 min)
7pm Break into small groups (30 min)
7:30 Report back (10 min)
7:40 Meet in pairs (10 min)
7:50 Report Back (10 min)
8pm Closing (10 min)
8:10 Socializing some more (20 min)
8:30 End

"The Body" for Justice Discussions are every 3rd Monday at Sweetwater Cafe. Possible future POV: race, feminism, gender, dating, war, abortion, safer sex, veganism and... your suggestion.

RSVP at www.sojust.org Newcomers always welcomed!

Want to cross-promote your events and campaigns? Looking for like-minded progressives to hang out with in Boston? Are you new to the area and looking for groups to get involved in? Are you psyched about building strong cross-issue coalitions? Join us!

YES, WE MEAN YOU. We've got members of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, levels of activism and professions. We hope you see someone like yourself and meet someone you otherwise wouldn't have.

HEY ORGANIZERS! If you're involved with a group or project and want to spread the word bring flyers for the free lit table - and there'll be lots of opportunity to schmooze and network!

*Sweetwater Cafe is located at 3 Boylston Street. T Directions: Take the Green Line to the Boylston Street Stop. Take a right onto Boylston Street and walk 1/2 a block. They are located in the alley on the lefthand side, across from Boston Commons. Nearest Orange Line stop is Chinatown. Unfortunately this venue is not wheelchair accessible.

Want to connect outside of SoJust events? Members can view and post events, job & volunteer announcements, roommate searches, etc. on the 'Message Board' and 'Calendar' at www.sojust.org.

Wanna know more about SoJust? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions and learn about our Suggested Annual Membership Fee at www.sojust.org.

Nov 27, 2009: Pablo Francisco at Improv - Tempe, AZ

November 27th – 29th the Improv in Tempe welcomes back comedian Pablo Francisco. Pablo continues to bring his audiences to their feet with boisterous laughter and applause. He weaves together his arsenal of characters, spontaneous outbursts, and clever insights to create a stand-up show that more resembles an hour-long comedic jazz riff. He is an off-the-wall, animated character that points out the absurdity in an illogical, pop-culture obsessed world.
His unmatched take on all things pop culture has taken him into the ranks of the most popular touring comedians worldwide. Pablo’s enormous popularity has driven his Myspace Comedy page into the top 25 out of over 33,000 placing Pablo’s page in the top three most visited on the site. His outrageously funny material has hooked millions of viewers on YouTube.
Pablo had huge success on his most recent international tour and his international profile continues to grow. He sold out the world renowned Milky Way in Amsterdam and his show at the Troxy in London, selling over 26,000 tickets on his third 16 city tour of Sweden. Concurrently, Pablo is building his new one hour Comedy Central special to be filmed next year while packing colleges and major concert venues across the country. Francisco recently contributed self-produced content to digital campaigns for Nokia, Absolut and Rhapsody.
It is not uncommon to sense the anticipation of Pablo’s audience as his fans await their favorite impressions, while being surprised by his unpredictable transformations. Those who experience Pablo’s show for the first time find themselves captivated by his hilarious dead on impressions. Gene Lavanchy of FOX – TV Boston calls Pablo “the most talented comedian in the business today”. His unbelievable ability to physically morph himself into movie stars, singers, friends, family, and a multitude of nationalities give Pablo’s show a universal appeal. His drop-dead funny spoofing often leaves his audiences struggling to catch their breath which is the driving force behind his huge success. His rendition of the intensely melodramatic Spanish language soap operas on Telemundo and his narration of the action-movie preview with Arnold Schwarzenegger as a tortilla vendor bring screams of laughter coast to coast. This gifted performer continues to thrive on his creativity and the spontaneity of stand up comedy selling out concert venues, universities and comedy clubs alike. Pablo continually pushes the envelope, constantly refining new material and frighteningly accurate embodiments.
Pablo's own critically acclaimed ONE HOUR special on Comedy Central entitled “OUCH!” continues to stay on the network’s most requested list. DVDTALK calls “OUCH!” “Truly original and funny”. His much anticipated follow-up Comedy Central Special is due out in 2010.
In addition to his Comedy Central specials, Pablo has appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", Comedy Central’s “The Show Biz Show w/ David Spade” and “Mind of Mencia”. He has also been a cast member on the Fox Network's sketch comedy show "Mad TV,” TBS’s “Frank TV,” and made his debut appearance on Howard Stern’s radio show in 2009.
Pablo’s DVD “OUCH!” is available in major retail stores nationwide and at www.pablofrancisco.com or www.myspace.com/pablofrancisco.

Nov 23, 2009: The Second Glass Crash Course: Turkey Day Wine Pairings at Wine Gallery

Get Your Learn On! The Second Glass presents Crash Course Wine Seminars to empower you, the drinker, with more knowledge about wine by way of expert education and tasty sips.

Even if you’re already the most knowledgeable wino of your friends and family, bringing a wine to pair with Thanksgiving dinner is slightly more intimidating than bringing a bottle to pair with Friday night make-your-own pizza. A big roasted turkey with super filling sides probably isn’t something you eat frequently either, unless you’re a regular at Boston Market. On the other hand, if you know absolutely nothing about wine, have no fear! We’ll turn you into an expert (or at least a great faker) in the course of an hour.

Check out The Second Glass’s Thanksgiving Crash Course to discover wines that work perfectly with Turkey Day dinner. Sample 5-6 different wines along with yummy turkey to simulate the dinnertime experience. Impress your family, friends, or new in-laws with your wine selection.

With these baller wine pairings, The Second Glass hopes to keep you out of a food coma and encourage you to Drink More Wine! Let’s just say, if Plymouth Rock had wines this tasty, the Pilgrims and the Indians would have done less fighting and a lot more loving.

Nov 15, 2009: Children of Invention at Pacific Theatre at University of the Pacific

The Most-Celebrated and Most-Awarded Asian-American Film of 2009 comes to Stockton!

Chinese New Year Celebration of Stockton and the San Joaquin Film Society present a special benefit screening of Tze Chun's critically-acclaimed and multiple award-winning film "Children of Invention," on Sunday, November 15th at 2:00PM at the Pacific Theatre at University of the Pacific.

Admission is $20.00.

Producer Trevor Sagan will be in attendance.

ABOUT THE FILM

One of Filmmaker Magazine’s "25 New Faces of Independent Film," writer-director Tze Chun makes his feature film debut with one of the most-awarded and best-reviewed films of the year.

With a World Premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, "Children of Invention" is by turns humorous and heartbreaking, an "edge-of-your-seat family drama" (Spout) that’s both “powerfully moving and rigorously intelligent."(Boston Phoenix). After being evicted, hardworking single mom Elaine Cheng (Cindy Cheung, Lady in the Water) tries to maintain a normal life for her children, Raymond and Tina. Elaine juggles a number of jobs, including working for a questionable pyramid scheme. When Elaine doesn’t return home one night, nobody knows the kids are home alone, and they are left to fend for themselves. As the days pass, Raymond, a budding inventor, realizes he needs to come up with a plan to take care of his little sister. Referencing both the mortgage meltdown and suburban Ponzi schemes, “the film finds delicate moments of beauty and grace as its child heroes are forced to make their way” (Filmmaker Magazine). Featuring “gifted child actors--off-the-charts cute, refreshingly free of Hollywood precociousness” (LA Weekly), "Children of Invention" is "as close to cinematic purity as one is likely to see this year" (Film Society of Lincoln Center), a timely drama about the influence of the adult world on children and resilience in hard times.

86 min | USA | 2009
Film is in English and Chinese, with English Subtitles

Participants will include:

* Thomas Greco, Author of The End of Money and the Future of Civilization
* John Katovich, President of Katovich Law Group, Presidio School of Management Professor, and Chief Legal Officer of the Boston Stock Exchange
* Don Shaffer, President and CEO of RSF Social Finance
* Leslie Christian, President and CEO of Portfolio 21 Investments
* Derek Huntington, President of Sonoma County Go Local
* Mike Leung, Worker Cooperative Credit Union Organizer
* Jenny Kassan, Managing Director of Katovich Law Group and President of Community Ventures

In the United States today, small businesses constitute about one-half of the private economy in terms of output and jobs, but they receive almost no investment from the nation’s pension funds or from mutual, hedge, venture, or any other kind of investment funds. In a well-functioning financial system, roughly one-half of the investment should go to roughly one-half of the economy.

We will begin the evening with a presentation about one of the primary causes for this market failure: the legal barriers to raising capital that disproportionately burden small businesses.

Next we will discuss some cutting edge strategies that have been used to overcome these barriers.

We will conclude with a discussion of legislative changes needed to address the barriers to capital-raising for small business and the formation of a working group to move the agenda forward.

We are hosting an OpenProject session from 7PM-11PM on Tuesday November 17th at the Sprout/DINO shared space [339R Summer St. Somerville, MA 02144].

We are having two fantastically productive and prolific makers be in the space to demo their work and help you with yours:

Josh Gordonson Josh is a sophomore at MIT who’s recently received the Awesome Foundation’s Awesome grant, which will go towards creating several cotton candy guns, exposing the world to the horrors of ‘polysaccharide warfare’. For the past few years he’s been working on wearables (soft-circuits), time keeping devices (eddy current clock and others), and cotton candy machines (both standard and projectile). In the past few weeks, he has become deeply interested in learning how to integrate electronics with biological systems. On the average day, he enjoys embedding himself in nature, learning, and pondering the path towards our inevitable robot overlords.
